Community health nurses' knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with adolescent contraceptive services.

A national sample of community health nurses were surveyed to assess their knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with reproductive health services. Results indicated that slightly more than half of the nurses provided or administered contraceptive services to adolescents, although 73% worked in settings where contraceptive services were provided to adolescents. However, only 3.6% indicated that adolescents were their primary client population. The majority (64.3%) stated that they felt as prepared to work with adolescents as they did with adult clients. While 98% were aware that most

Relationship of Certified Nurse Educator Certification to Teaching, Service, and Scholarship: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The Certified Nurse Educator (CNE®) credential highlights competency in nursing education and is part of continuing education and professional development for nurse educators. There is limited research on the relationship between CNE certification and teaching, service, and scholarship (TSS). This pilot study explored the relationship of CNE certification and TSS. METHOD: A mixed-methods study survey approach was used with snowball sampling. The total study sample included 213 nursing educators who held the CNE credential, were currently in an academic or clinical teaching role, w

The role of the district nurse providing care to service users with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Service users living with Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) often delay or avoid seeking diagnosis or treatment because of a fear of judgement or feelings of shame associated with their obsessions and compulsions. They may feel that their behaviour defies societal norms, which can lead to social isolation, and in turn, further contribute to health inequality. When such individuals present with physical illness and are seen by district nurses, it is imperative that behaviours are understood and approached appropriately. It is important to develop therapeutic relationships and consider their h

Undergraduate Nursing Student Reflections on Academic Service Learning Experiences - A Qualitative Study.

The provision of nursing care has shifted toward integrated primary care (provision of community health services by an interprofessional team), requiring that nurse educators take steps to ensure students have opportunities to learn and practice the leadership and professional skills required to function as members and leaders of interdisciplinary teams. We developed the Transforming RN Roles in Community Based Integrated Primary Care (TRIP) program for undergraduate nursing students to facilitate this learning. During clinical immersion, students participated in academic service learning (ASL

Nurse-Administered Analgesic Treatment in Italian Emergency Medical Services: A Nationwide Survey.

BACKGROUND: Acute pain is common among patients requiring assistance from prehospital emergency medical services (EMS). Nonetheless, the undertreatment of pain in this context remains a frequent phenomenon. Timely and effective analgesia is a crucial feature in emergency medicine. To ensure analgesia provision, prehospital paramedics and nurses can administer analgesics via standard operating protocols or under a physician's remote supervision. Information about such protocols in Italian EMS is lacking. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the availability of nurse's standard analgesia protocols in Italy

Surgical wound dehiscence in an Australian community nursing service: time and cost to healing.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical wound dehiscence (SWD) increases the length of hospital stay and impacts on patient wellbeing and health-care costs. Globally, the health-care costs associated with SWD are poorly reported and those reported are frequently associated with surgical site infection (SSI), rather than dehiscence of non-microbial cause. This retrospective study describes and reports on the costs and time to healing associated with a number of surgical patients who were referred to a community nursing service for treatment of an SWD following discharge from a metropolitan hospital, in Perth, West

Pain management: setting up a nurse-led femoral nerve block service.

Managing pain following a fractured neck of femur is challenging for a number of reasons. This group of patients are typically older people and frail with multiple co-morbidities and are often on numerous medications. In addition to a hip fracture, they commonly present with acute medical problems. Fractures cause significant pain, which can be difficult to manage safely and effectively with the traditional analgesics. A femoral nerve block has been shown to be a safe and effective preoperative intervention for managing pain in this patient group while they wait for surgery. This article descr

Nursing Facility and Home and Community Based Service Need Criteria in the United States.

Over the past two decades states have expanded the delivery of long term care from institutions to the home and community. Although state Medicaid need criteria for the home and community based services (HCBS) waiver program must be equivalent to those for nursing facility (NF) criteria, other screening procedures for these services are not specified. This study examined variations in need criteria, methods for determining need, and assessment forms for NF and HCBS across the states, and identified whether these procedures were more stringent for HCBS than for NFs. The NF minimum need criteria

An Exploration of Early Nurse Writings by Walt Whitman and Susie King Taylor: Beacons of Valor, Compassion, and Service for Contemporary Military Nurses.

Since the American Revolution, early nurse writers have played crucial roles in shaping the nursing profession. Their pioneering roles and writings prioritized patient advocacy through the formal elevation of nurse voices, which called for improvements in patient care through the implementation of practice standards and policy. During the American Civil War, Walt Whitman and Susie King Taylor wrote about tending to injured soldiers: dressing their wounds, honoring their service, and even witnessing their deaths. Due to time, distance, and historical constraints, Whitman and Taylor were not mem
