Nursing staff competence assessment instruments: a scoping review with implications for long-term care.

AIM: Competence assessment is essential for professional growth, workforce planning, and quality improvement in long-term care (LTC). However, the wide range of instruments, their limited differentiation based on various qualification levels, and the lack of standardized frameworks hinder effective use. This scoping review aimed to map international evidence on competence assessment instruments used in residential LTC nursing, broadening the scope to include acute care, community-based, and mixed-care settings to enhance the relevance and transferability of findings. METHODS: A scoping review

Therapy Staff Turnover in Skilled Nursing Facilities: Facility Characteristics and Associations With Resident Outcomes.

This study measured turnover of physical, occupational, and speech therapy staff in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) from July 2020 through September 2023. We estimated associations between SNF characteristics and high therapy staff turnover and between turnover and therapy-relevant SNF-level patient outcomes. Average quarterly turnover of combined therapy staff was 13.0%, with higher turnover in for-profit SNFs, urban SNFs, and SNFs with lower therapy and nurse staffing and recent ownership changes. Periods of high therapy staff turnover within SNFs were associated with small increases in tw

Feedback to nursing staff as an intervention to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

Because of high incidence of catheter-related urinary tract infections (UTIs) in our Veterans Affairs medical center, we began providing nursing staff with unit-specific UTI rates. In our preintervention period, the first quarter of 1995, 38 infections occurred in 1186 catheter-patient-days or 32/1000 catheter-patient-days (95% CI, 22.9-43.7). Thereafter, nursing staff members were provided with a quarterly report with catheter-related UTI rates depicted graphically by unit. In the 18 months after this intervention, the mean UTI rate decreased to 17.4/1000 catheter-patient-days (95% CI, 14.6-2

Preventing mechanical restraint in forensic mental health care: A secondary analysis of interviews with patients, carers, nursing assistants and nursing staff.

The use of restrictive interventions to prevent harm remains one of the most persistent challenges in psychiatry. Mechanical restraint (MR), involving belts to limit patient movement, is among the most controversial practices due to their physical and psychological consequences for both patients and staff. MR prevalence varies widely across countries and remains particularly high in forensic mental health settings. In Denmark, MR episodes have increased in recent years despite the implementation of evidence-based interventions, underscoring the need for effective, ethical, and sustainable stra

However, earlier inspections by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health showed many discrepancies between the nursing staff's clinical competence and adequate and continuous education. AIM: This study aimed to explore nursing staff, i.e. the clinical competence and decision-making ski

Guidelines for Reducing the Adverse Effects of Shift Work on Nursing Staff: A Systematic Review.

BackgroundThe increasing demand for care in hospital settings, often at a high intensity, requires organizing work according to 24 h shifts. Nevertheless, shift work (SW), especially at night, alters the circadian rhythm, negatively affecting the psychophysical health of nurses, compromising their quality of life, and jeopardizing patient safety. Shift-work-related diseases (SWDs) can arise from these disruptions.MethodsThis systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of several types of medical, psychotherapeutic, and educational interventions and strategies on shift-work-related diseases

Personal recovery philosophies are based on positive attitudes and an optimism that recognizes and values people and their strengths and capacity to achieve goals. Little is known from previous studies about the illness perceptions of learning disability practitioners who work with people that experience both a learning disability and schizophrenia. The illness beliefs of learning disability practitioners about schizophrenia may mediate the potenti

INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR NURSING STAFF REGARDING APPROACH TO A PATIENT WITH SPIDER PHOBIA AND/OR BITE.

Spider bites are uncommon medical events, since there are limited number of spiders world-wide with fangs strong enough to pierce human skin, and most spiders bite humans only as a final defense when being crushed between skin and another object. Thus, most lesions attributed to spider bites are caused by some other etiology. The spiders that can cause medically significant bites include widow and false widow spiders (worldwide), recluse spiders (mostly North and South America), Australian funnel web spiders (eastern coastal Australia) and Phoneutria spiders (Brazil). Acute spider bites most c
