Mineral disorders after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients receiving parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition is a critical therapeutic approach for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, parenteral nutrition is associated with complications such as mineral disorders. This study evaluated the prevalence of hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia in adult transplant patients before and within the first 24 days of parenteral nutrition infusion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and required parenteral nutrition at a public quaternary hospi

Beyond Medication: Integrative and Nutrition Therapies for Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, affect a substantial portion of the global population. These disorders are best conceptualized through a biopsychosocial framework, reflecting the complex interplay and bidirectional communication among biological, psychological, and social factors. While conventional pharmaceutical treatments remain limited in efficacy and patient satisfaction, interest in integrative approaches to care continues to grow. However, despite the increasing use of integrative interventions for DGBIs, their thera

Nutrition and brain health: Implications of Mediterranean diet elements for psychiatric disorders.

The Mediterranean diet is an anti-inflammatory diet now recognized for prevention and intervention against cardiometabolic disorders, although emerging literature also shows its benefits for mental health. This paper surveys literature pertinent to the Mediterranean diet with respect to schizophrenia, bipolar and unipolar depression and cognition. The National Library of Medicine database of literature was searched for publications relating to our topic through June 2024. Our results highlight the Mediterranean diet's potential role in mediating inflammation, potentially through the gut-brain

Progress in research on nutrition, neuroinflammation and dopaminergic alterations in Tic disorders.

Tic disorders (TD) represent a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in children, characterised by involuntary, sudden motor or vocal tics. Dysfunction of the dopamine system plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of TD. Recent findings indicate that deep brain stimulation, by modulating striatal dopamine release, substantially alleviates tic symptoms. Neuroimaging studies have shown increased dopamine transporter binding and decreased serotonin levels in patients with TD. The presence of anti-dopamine D2 receptor autoantibodies, which correlate with disease severity, suggests immune involv

Nutrition and Micronutrient Interactions in Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders: Implications for Cardiovascular Health.

Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism and cardiovascular function, with even mild dysfunction-such as subclinical hypothyroidism-negatively impacting heart health. While previous studies have confirmed the effects of iodine, selenium, and vitamin D on thyroid regulation and inflammation, the combined role of these nutrients in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in autoimmune thyroid disorders remains insufficiently understood. This review explores the influence of specific micronutrients-including selenium, iodine, and zinc-and dietary patterns, particularly the

Oral health-related quality of life in patients with disorders of nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Researchers demonstrated a correlation between nutrition and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Little is known about the correlation between disorders of nutrition (DON) and Oral HRQoL (OHRQoL). OBJECTIVES: (a) To measure OHRQoL in DON patients compared to patients attending nutritional counselling for other reasons (eg, systemic diseases or general dietary counselling) (NCOR) and to healthy controls attending routine dental screenings. (b) To analyse associations between OHRQoL and demographics, health-related behaviours and nutritional practices. We hypothesised that OHRQo

Nutrition Management in Patients With Chronic Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically review effects of nutrition interventions on outcomes in patients with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. There is currently a lack of evidence-based guidelines for nutrition management in this group, likely a result of the rarity of the conditions. METHODS: A systematic review of all study types to evaluate current evidence-based nutrition interventions was performed using Medline, Embase, and CINAHL databases. Two independent reviewers participated in the process of this systematic review. A total of 15 studies and a tot

The importance of nutrition in aiding recovery from substance use disorders: A review.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a prerequisite for health; yet, there is no special nutritional assessment or guidance for drug and alcohol dependent individuals, despite the fact that their food consumption is often very limited, risking malnutrition. Further, the premise is examined that malnutrition may promote drug seeking and impede recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). METHOD: A narrative review addressed the relationship between substance use disorders and nutrition, including evidence for malnutrition, as well as their impact on metabolism and appetite regulation. The implications of

Prevalence of eating disorders among dietetics students: does nutrition education make a difference?

Several studies have indicated that college students majoring in dietetics have more problems associated with food than do students majoring in other disciplines. If this is true, dietetics students may need more counseling and education on eating disorders, especially because many will eventually be counseling others professionally. To assess the prevalence of negative eating behaviors among college dietetics majors, surveys based on the Eating Pattern Questionnaire were distributed to college women with majors in dietetics and other selected disciplines at a medium-sized California universit

Advances in Cardiolipin Analysis: Applications in Central Nervous System Disorders and Nutrition Interventions.

Cardiolipin (CL), a unique dimeric phospholipid predominantly enriched in the inner mitochondrial membrane, is a crucial determinant of mitochondrial structure and function. Its content, fatty acyl composition, and oxidation state are associated with mitochondrial bioenergetics, dynamics, and cellular signaling. Disruptions in CL metabolism are increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury. This narrative review summarizes rece

Nutrition and Nutraceuticals in Neuroinflammatory and Brain Metabolic Stress: Implications for Neurodegenerative Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A steep rise in the incidences of neurodegenerative disorders could be the combined effect of several non-genetic factors such as increased life expectancy, environmental pollutants, lifestyle, and dietary habits, as population-level genetic change require multiple generations. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic over-nutrition induces brain metabolic stress and neuroinflammation, and are individually known to promote neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Although the association of

Metabolic bone disease in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic disorders and total parenteral nutrition.

Privational vitamin D deficiency is assumed to be uncommon in the developed countries because of the routine fortification of foods with vitamin D. Malabsorption of vitamin D and calcium (especially in an environment of reduced sun exposure) therefore accounts for the majority of cases of metabolic bone disease seen in patients with various gastrointestinal disorders in the United States. Yet recognition of this often asymptomatic bone disease is unsatisfactory and frequently delayed for months or even years. This results in severe irreversible bone loss, putting patients at increased fracture
