BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has a mortality rate which can reach 30-40%. Compared with other diseases, obesity is often associated with lower mortality; this is referred to as the 'obesity paradox'. Herein, we aimed to summarize the studies of the relations between obesity and mortality after ICH.
METHOD: For this systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registry CRD42023426835), we conducted searches for relevant articles in both PubMed and Embase. Non-English language literature, irrelevant literature, and non-human trials were excluded. All included publications were th

BACKGROUND: Conventional understanding of obesity demonstrates negative consequences for overall health, whereas more modern studies have found that it can provide certain advantages. The current literature on the effect of body mass index (BMI) in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is similarly inconsistent.
METHODS: cohort of 406 patients with SAH were retrospectively reviewed and stratified into 3 BMI categories: normal weight, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2; overweight, 25-29.9 kg/m2; and obese, >30 kg/m2. Neurologic status, the presence of clinical cerebral vasospasm, and outcome as assessed by the modified

Obesity is an independent risk factor for developing heart failure and the combination of the two disease states will prove to be a significant health burden over the coming years. Obesity is likely to contribute to the development of heart failure through a variety of mechanisms, including structural and functional changes, lipotoxicity and steatosis and altered substrate selection. However, once heart failure has developed, it seems that obesity confers a beneficial influence on prognosis in what has been termed the 'obesity paradox'. This may be a statistical phenomenon, but it should be co

The obesity paradox, suggesting improved survival in obese individuals compared to those with normal weight, remains debated, particularly in sepsis. While it has been explored in clinical and experimental settings, conclusive evidence is lacking. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyses the relationship between obesity and survival in murine sepsis models. This systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines included studies from PubMed/Medline (up to January 31, 2025) comparing sepsis survival in obese and non-obese mice. All eligible murine studies were systema-ti

Obesity is a predictor of the development of systolic and diastolic heart failure (HF), but once established, patients with HF and obesity have better outcomes than their leaner counterparts, a phenomenon termed the "obesity paradox." We sought to investigate the impact of adipose tissue quantity and distribution, measured by way of computed tomography, on outcomes in patients with HF. Patients admitted for acute decompensated HF between January 2017 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Body composition measurements were made on computed tomography of the abdomen/pelvis. PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) and kidney cancer mortality are inconsistently associated in the scientific literature. To understand how study design affects results, we contrasted associations between pre-diagnosis BMI and mortality under different analytic scenarios in a large, population-based prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Using data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study (1995-2011), we constructed two cohorts: a "full at-risk" cohort with no kidney cancer history at baseline (n = 252,845) and an "incident cancer" subset who developed kidney cancer during follow-up (n = 1,652). Cox

There is a paradoxical relationship between obesity, as measured by BMI, and many types of cancer, including non-small-cell lung cancer. Obese non-small-cell lung cancer patients have been shown to fare better than their non-obese counterparts. To analyze the multifaceted effects of obesity on oncologic outcomes, we reviewed the literature on the obesity paradox, methods to measure adiposity, the obesity-related derangements in immunology and metabolism, and the oncologic impact of confounding variables such as gender, smoking, and concomitant medications such as statins and metformin. We anal

In recent years, evidence supporting the theory of obesity paradox has increased, showing that obese/overweight people with prevalent chronic diseases experience lower mortality compared with patients of normal weight. So far, evidence is most comprehensive in cardiovascular and chronic renal diseases; however, published studies are prone to many biases, enabling us to reach a definite conclusion. Available data in chronic liver disease is scarce and ambiguous. Obesity is traditionally associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and steatosis in viral hepatitis and as such one would not e

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is strongly associated with incident gout risk, but its association with the risk of recurrent gout attacks has been null or weak, constituting an obesity paradox. We sought to demonstrate and overcome the methodologic issues associated with the obesity paradox for risk of recurrent gout attacks.
METHODS: Using the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial database, we decomposed the total effect of obesity into its direct and indirect (i.e., mediated) effects using marginal structural models. We also estimated the total effect of body mass index (BMI) change from baseline am

OBJECTIVE: Positive associations between body mass index (BMI) and clinical outcomes have been found and are called "the obesity survival paradox." However, whether obesity has protective effects or if this paradox is because of confounding remains unclear. Herein, we analyzed the effects of weight on long-term mortality in a large cohort of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and investigated whether the differential effects of obesity on inflammation pathways accounted for mortality differences.
METHODS: For this secondary analysis, we followed prospectively for 6 y 763 CAP pat

BACKGROUND: Obesity increases risk for clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), yet obese patients appear to experience longer survival than nonobese patients. We examined body mass index (BMI) in relation to stage, grade, and cancer-specific mortality (CSM) while considering detection bias, nutritional status, and molecular tumor features.
METHODS: Data were available from 2119 ccRCC patients who underwent renal mass surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center between 1995 and 2012. Logistic regression models produced associations between BMI and advanced disease. Multivariable competi

OBJECTIVES: Adult obesity prevalence exhibits significant spatial disparities across England. While traditional global regression models often overlook local variations, it is unclear whether these relationships vary spatially or remain stable. This study aims to robustly identify determinants of clinical obesity and test for spatial non-stationarity using best-practice diagnostics.
METHODS: Using 2023/24 data from 151 Upper Tier Local Authorities, we employed a spatial econometric framework. We specified a row-standardized Queen's contiguity matrix for global models. A Spatial Error Model (S

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and postoperative mortality in patients undergoing aortic valve surgery, with an emphasis on exploring the presence and limits of the "obesity paradox", the phenomenon wherein overweight and mildly obese patients may experience lower mortality despite obesity's general association with adverse health outcomes.
METHODS: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was used to obtain data from adult patients who underwent aortic valve surgery between 2016 and 2020. BMI categories, as well as comorbidities, were identifi

Background: Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) is a transient left ventricular systolic dysfunction typically characterized by anteroseptal-apical dyskinetic ballooning of the left ventricle with a hyperkinetic base, without significant obstructive coronary artery disease. The interplay between systemic inflammation and hemodynamic stress in sepsis exacerbates susceptibility to TTS. We aim to investigate the characteristics and factors associated with TTS in critically ill patients with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 361 patients admitt

Globally, the prevalence of overweight and obesity, including among pregnant women, has substantially increased in the past three decades. This has been fueled by, among other factors, an increase in the consumption of high energy-dense foods and a decrease in physical activity. Additionally, global prevalence of anemia among pregnant women remains a public health concern. Overweight/obesity as well as anemia in pregnancy are independently associated with adverse health outcomes for the mother and offspring. In some pregnant women, the two conditions coexist. Yet current knowledge in this fiel

Background and purpose - Obesity as measured by BMI has been associated with increased survival in various diseases, a phenomenon known as the "obesity paradox." It is unknown whether obesity is associated with survival after pathological fractures. We investigated the association between BMI and survival after surgery for pathological hip fracture, to improve survival prognostication, and lay grounds for further interventional nutritional studies. Patients and methods - We analyzed prospectively collected data from Swedish nationwide registry "RIKSHÖFT." The study cohort included 1,000 patien

The obesity paradox describes a survival benefit for higher body mass index in patients with heart failure. But other factors like cardiorespiratory fitness may play a role in heart failure development, severity, and survival. Although more research is needed to better understand the relationships between body mass index and fitness in patients with heart failure, evidence indicates that recommending weight loss and an exercise program is appropriate for most patients.

Objective The aim of this study was to assess the baseline clinical characteristics, coronary angiographic features, and adverse cardiovascular events during hospitalization and at 1 year of follow-up in obese patients compared with overweight and normal/underweight patients. Methods A prospective, multicenter study of consecutive patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention was performed. Results Of 2425 enrolled patients, 699 (28.8%) were obese, 1178 (48.6%) were overweight, and 548 (22.6%) were normal/underweight. Obese patients were more likely to be female and to have a higher p
