Portable handheld radiograph devices are increasingly common in forensic odontology, particularly in postmortem dental examinations. However, concerns remain regarding radiation exposure to operators handling these devices in mortuary settings. This study aimed to assess the radiation dose to the lens of the eye and fingers of the operator that is exposed to radiation from the NOMAD™ Pro handheld Radiograph. The radiation exposure on the operator of a dental portable handheld radiograph device in the dental postmortem procedure was monitored from March 2020 to February 2021. NanoDot™ OSL Dosim

BACKGROUND: Dentists are at greater risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) which can be caused by repetitive movements, improper posture and long working hours. If ergonomic principles are applied in the field of dentistry, they help to prevent occupational ergonomic health hazards and provides more comfort to the dentist and patient.
OBJECTIVE: To obtain information regarding dental ergonomics practice of dentists in Indonesia and its related factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a purposive sampling method via Google Form to 231 dentists in DKI Jakar

Dental personnel are exposed to a high number of sensitizing chemicals such as acrylics, metals, anesthetics, fragrances, and antimicrobials. Although these chemicals usually cause allergic contact dermatitis, they also may cause immediate contact reactions. Usually the diagnostics involve patch testing, but prick testing needs to be performed to confirm immediate allergy. This article reviews the important causes and diagnostics of skin allergy in dental personnel. Special attention is given to the acrylates and methacrylates.

Four virus strains -- influenza A/Texas 1/77 (H3N2) an A/USSR 90/77 (H1N1), adenovirus and parainfluenza type 2 -- were isolated from different specimens collected in dental surgery rooms. High levels of antibodies to respiratory viruses (influenza, parainfluenza 1, 2 and 3), adeno-, cytomegalic and herpes viruses, as well as the presence of HBsAg and anti-HBs could be detected in sera from patients hospitalized for dento-maxillofacial surgery. An epidemiological survey among dentists and dental assistants confirmed their exposure to an enhanced risk of occupational virus contamination, as com

OBJECTIVE: Information on the risk of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection transmission in dental healthcare settings was incomplete only few years ago; therefore, MRSA infection control guidelines were necessarily based on data extrapolated from other fields. Recently, publication of specific studies have made it possible to review such risk.
METHODS: Studies of MRSA infection in dentistry were searched for using EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Google and were allocated into the following sections: (1) direct evidence: documented cases of MRSA transmission in dentistry; (2) indi

In dentistry, allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates and allergic contact urticaria to latex are important occupational hazards. There is a need to identify non-latex gloves which are suitable for dental work but at the same time provide adequate protection against acrylate monomers. In a previous study, a new open-chamber system was used for testing the in vivo protection of 6 different gloves against an acrylate-containing ethanol-based dental adhesive. A nitrile glove gave the best protection among the gloves suitable for dental work. In the present study, the test model was used to inves

The selection of dental materials for specific treatment purposes is primarily based on their physical properties. The composition of materials available indicates that there is the potential for adverse biological effects. The amounts of substances released are usually too low to cause any overt systemic toxic effects. However, many of the chemicals used in dentistry are irritating and may cause local damage. Also, in reactions mediated via the amplifying mechanisms of the immune system, small amounts may lead to clinical manifestations of allergic contact dermatitis and urticaria. A special

Occupational injuries involving musculoskeletal tissues are often related to repetitive movements of upper limbs and prolonged postures such as sitting and standing--activities common in dentistry. Surveys of the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders among dentists are few, but in Nebraska, 29 percent of more than 1,000 dentists reported symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in the upper limbs or neck. The Nebraskan dentists reported that crown and bridge work was most likely to evoke altered sensations in their upper limbs. Furthermore, since 47 percent of carpal tunnel syndrome cases in the gen

BACKGROUNDS: Two-component acrylic resin used in nail art and dentistry can cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), but only a few reports from Japan have been published.
CASES: A 35-year-old female manicurist (case 1) and 30-year-old female dental hygienist (case 2) were diagnosed with ACD caused by ethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate in a liquid monomer of two-component acrylic resin respectively. Case 1 was sensitized from direct skin contact with nail art acrylic products, which could have been avoided, and gave up both being a manicurist and a user. Onset in case 2 occurred when

INTRODUCTION: Sculptured artificial acrylic nails are widely used in developed countries. Methylmethacrylate was first reported in 1941 as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Since then, occupational contact allergies to acrylates in dentistry, orthopedic surgery, printing industry and other industries have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: We describe 3 patients with contact allergy to acrylates in artificial nails.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Patch tests with the Portuguese baseline series of contact allergens and an extended series of acrylates was applied.
RESULTS: We observed three female patients

Nitrous oxide and oxygen is widely used for conscious sedation in dental offices. It can have benefits for patients who experience dental anxiety or are medically compromised and gain from the oxygen enrichment and stress reduction. Clinicians benefit when patients are cooperative and satisfied. There are a few patients for whom nitrous oxide would not be an optimum therapy. Chronic occupational exposure to low levels of nitrous oxide has several reproductive and health risks. Reducing the ambient concentrations is important.

The number of new cases--or incidence--of tuberculosis is increasing in nearly every region of the world. A number of forces have resulted in the increased incidence of TB in developed countries, including the HIV epidemic, homelessness, and emigration from highly endemic regions. Although the number of new cases in Canada is relatively constant, the TB experience in the United States serves as a reminder that this situation could change rapidly. The appearance of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has added to the urgency of situation. The basic methods of preventing TB transmission include pre
