Experimental Studies on the Impact of the Projected Ocean Acidification on Fish Survival, Health, Growth, and Meat Quality; Black Sea Bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), Physiological and Histological Studies.

Acidification (OA), a global threat to the world's oceans, is projected to significantly grow if CO2 continues to be emitted into the atmosphere at high levels. This will result in a slight decrease in pH. Since the latter is a logarithmic scale of acidity, the higher acidic seawater is expected to have a tremendous impact on marine living resources in the long-term. An 8-week laboratory experiment was designed to assess the impact of the projected pH in 2100 and beyond on fish survival, health, growth, and fish meat quality. Two projected scenarios were simulated with the control treatment, i

A Carbonic Anhydrase Serves as an Important Acid-Base Regulator in Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas Exposed to Elevated CO2: Implication for Physiological Responses of Mollusk to Ocean Acidification.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) have been demonstrated to play an important role in acid-base regulation in vertebrates. However, the classification and modulatory function of CAs in marine invertebrates, especially their responses to ocean acidification remain largely unknown. Here, a cytosolic α-CA (designated as CgCAII-1) was characterized from Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and its molecular activities against CO2 exposure were investigated. CgCAII-1 possessed a conserved CA catalytic domain, with high similarity to invertebrate cytoplasmic or mitochondrial α-CAs. Recombinant CgCAII-1 could co

Mutligenerational chronic exposure to near future ocean acidification in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): Insights into the regulation of the transcriptome in a sensory organ involved in feed intake, the tongue.

In this study, we examined the effect of near future ocean acidification (OA) on the transcriptome of a sensory organ in contact with surrounding water, the tongue in adult European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by mean of RNAseq experiment. We acquired a total of 14.1 Mb quality-trimmed reads covering 18,703 expressed genes from the tongue of fish reared from two generations at actual (pH 8.0 condition) and predicted near-future seawater pH (pH 7.6 condition). Gene ontologies analyses of expressed genes support the evidence that the tongue exhibits biological processes related to the sensor

Effects of rapid acidification in marine seawater: Focus on Actinopterygii.

The progressive acidification of the world's oceans has led to widespread concern regarding the potential consequences for marine biosphere. As a result, most research has been focused on the steady increase of dissolved CO₂ and consequent acidification thus on calcifying species while less attention has been paid to the physiological and developmental impacts of teleost fish. However, rapid and massive release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the marine environment may occur due to both natural and anthropogenic causes. This review specifically examines the outcomes of rapid but confined CO₂ emis

Carbon allocation strategy of Thalassiosira weissflogii in response to elevated pCO2.

Diatoms are of significance in the marine ecosystem, playing a pivotal role in the sustenance of marine life and the transfer of carbon from the surface ocean to deeper waters. Although numerous studies have investigated the effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) on marine diatoms across both short- and long-term adaptation scales, the molecular mechanisms governing chitin metabolism in response to ocean acidification remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining transcriptomic, metabolomic, and physiological analyses to examine the marine diatom Thala

Hindcast (back to 1955) and forecast (up to 2100) of sea-surface pH at BATS and hydrostation S (Bermuda area).

Time-series measurements in the North Atlantic Ocean at the Hydrostation S site (32°10'N, 64°30'W), started in 1954. At that time, temperature and salinity were measured but it was not yet possible to measure the properties of the oceanic carbon cycle. We use these important hydrographic data with the knowledge acquired from more recent measurements (since 1989) of the CO2/carbonate properties at the near-by Bermuda Atlantic Time Series Study (BATS; 31°40'N, 64°10'W), to reconstruct, using two different approaches based upon multi-linear-regressions, the pH at this hydrostation S since its beg

Ecological feasibility of ocean alkalinity enhancement: Physiological and metabolic responses of Isochrysis galbana.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has emerged as a promising marine negative emission technology for climate change mitigation, yet its ecological safety, particularly regarding key primary producers, remains incompletely understood. Isochrysis galbana is a widely distributed nanophytoplankton that serves as a valuable feed in aquaculture. This study aimed to systematically investigate the physiological and metabolic responses of I. galbana to simulated ocean alkalization under gradient OAE scenarios (Δ total alkalinity ≈ +600 and +1200 µmol kg⁻¹). A 16-day experiment was conducted to verify

Factorial field manipulation reveals CO2 and temperature effects on a critical habitat-forming shellfish.

Ocean acidification and warming could have substantial negative impacts on marine organisms, particularly shell-building species. These environmental drivers may operate independently or interactively, amplifying or mitigating their impacts. Previous results have primarily come from lab studies, yet these climate drivers co-occur within naturally dynamic systems with high abiotic and biotic variability. Within intertidal habitats, the impacts of these drivers in situ remain poorly understood. We conducted a 6-month field manipulation to determine the effects of ocean acidification and warming

A Review on Climate Change Redefining Tetrodotoxin Accumulation and Ecological Dynamics in Pufferfishes.

Pufferfishes (Tetraodontidae) accumulate tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin, primarily through microbial and trophic pathways rather than endogenous biosynthesis, linking their toxicity directly to marine microbial ecology and food-web structure. Anthropogenic climate change, ocean warming, deoxygenation, and acidification are reshaping the environmental conditions that govern TTX production, transfer, and accumulation. This review synthesizes evidence from 62 studies (28 with quantitative data) identified through a PRISMA-ScR-compliant search. We organize findings around three mechanistic path

Balancing methane emission and alkalinity conservation: Insights from mineral amendments in coastal sediments.

With global climate warming and ocean acidification, mineral amendments in coastal areas have emerged as a promising strategy to bolster carbon sinks and alkalinity. However, most research has predominantly focused on carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption, with limited exploration of methane (CH4) reduction despite its more potent greenhouse effect. To address this gap, our study conducted a microcosm manipulative experiment employing coastal wetlands sediments to elucidate the regulatory effects of various mineral amendments on greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2 and CH4) and seawater alkalinit

Redox reactions and weak buffering capacity lead to acidification in the Chesapeake Bay.

The combined effects of anthropogenic and biological CO2 inputs may lead to more rapid acidification in coastal waters compared to the open ocean. It is less clear, however, how redox reactions would contribute to acidification. Here we report estuarine acidification dynamics based on oxygen, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), pH, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity data from the Chesapeake Bay, where anthropogenic nutrient inputs have led to eutrophication, hypoxia and anoxia, and low pH. We show that a pH minimum occurs in mid-depths where acids are generated as a result of H2S oxidation in

Leveraging Microbes for Sustainable Development Goal 14 Progress.

To promote sustainable use of marine resources, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14): Life Below Water aims to alleviate the threats of marine pollution, habitat degradation, unsustainable fishing and ocean acidification on ocean ecosystems. With the 2030 deadline approaching, much work remains, necessitating innovative solutions for ocean health and sustainability that can be upscaled and implemented globally. The metabolic versatility of microorganisms makes them powerful, yet currently underutilized tools that can be leveraged to advance SDG 14. Here, we synthesize cu

pCO2-induced seawater acidification influencing cadmium toxicity on antioxidant defenses responses in juvenile Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum.

Ocean acidification is known to interact with heavy metals, impacting physiological processes of marine organisms. This study investigated antioxidant defenses of juvenile Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum exposed to cadmium (Cd) across ambient-relevant to high concentrations, under pCO2-induced seawater acidification (SA) scenarios corresponding to IPCC ocean pH projections. Results revealed that clam's antioxidant system, encompassing GSH defense system and SOD-CAT defense lines, collectively combated oxidative stress dependent on specific stressors and their stress levels. GSH system is v

Seawater acidification accelerates growth but hastens decline in batch cultures of the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana.

Diatoms are characterized by rapid cell division and a high capacity to adapt to environmental variability, and some species can form blooms when environmental conditions are favorable. Previous studies have largely focused on the bloom development phase, during which biomass accumulates rapidly, whereas the decline phase-despite its critical role in carbon export and microbial loop dynamics-has received far less attention. Here, we tracked changes in cell density and inorganic carbon utilization characteristics throughout the entire course of a simulated Thalassiosira pseudonana bloom under a

Eukaryotic phytoplankton drive a decrease in primary production in response to elevated CO2 in the tropical and subtropical oceans.

Ocean acidification caused by increasing anthropogenic CO2 is expected to impact marine phytoplankton productivity, yet the extent and even direction of these changes are not well constrained. Here, we investigate the responses of phytoplankton community composition and productivity to acidification across the western North Pacific. Consistent reductions in primary production were observed under acidified conditions in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and the northern South China Sea, whereas no significant changes were found at the northern boundary of the subtropical gyre. While prokaryoti

Enhanced weathering of lizardite-rich sand in seawater: effects of pH and CO₂ pressure on carbonate formation for climate change mitigation.

Enhanced weathering (EW) of serpentinized peridotites is being investigated as a potential approach for ex situ CO₂ sequestration in both coastal and open-ocean environments. Previous studies on serpentine minerals have provided important insights into their geochemical reactivity, highlighting their preferential dissolution behavior and enhanced weathering potential under natural conditions. This study examines the CO₂ sequestration potential of lizardite-rich sand and evaluates the formation of hydrated and carbonated mineral phases under varying CO₂ conditions. Mineralogical analyses indica

Brood Chamber Carbonate Chemistry in the oyster Ostrea edulis Is Dynamically Shaped by Warming, Acidification, and Ventilation.

Brooding organisms can modify the chemical environment experienced by developing offspring, potentially altering their exposure to climate change. In marine systems, however, the carbonate chemistry of brood chambers, and the mechanisms governing it, remain poorly resolved. Here, we combine high-resolution pH and CO2 measurements of the empty brood chamber (i.e., mantle cavity above gills) in the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) while also tracking valve gape to quantify how warming, ocean acidification, and ventilation interact to shape the internal environment experienced by larvae durin

Pteropods reliably record the aragonite compensation depth in the western Bay of Bengal.

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have a detrimental impact on the carbon sequestration by the oceans. Pteropods, a crucial component of the ocean's planktic community, secrete aragonite shells that are sensitive to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, making them the first indicators of ocean acidification. Therefore, pteropods are often used to observe the changes in aragonite compensation depth (ACD). Intriguingly, in the major parts of the northern Indian Ocean, the chemically defined ACD is < 800 m, but pteropods have been reported in surface sediments collected from much de

Response of CRH system in brain and gill of marine medaka to seawater acidification.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is mainly secreted by the hypothalamus to regulate stress when environmental factors change. Gills contact with water directly and may also secrete CRH to maintain local homeostasis. Ocean acidification changes water chemical parameters and is becoming an important environmental stressor for marine fish. The response of brain and gill CRH systems to ocean acidification remains unclear. In this study, marine medaka were exposed to CO2-acidified seawater (440 ppm, 1000 ppm, and 1800 ppm CO2) for 2 h, 4 h, 24 h, and 7 d, respectively. At 2 h and 4 h, the expr

Extracellular Multi-Unit Recording from the Olfactory Nerve of Teleosts.

Recent studies have shown that ocean acidification affects olfactory-driven behavior in fish. This may be due in part to a reduction in olfactory sensitivity in high PCO2/low pH water. To assess the effects of ocean acidification, or olfactory sensitivity in marine fish in general, we propose that extracellular multi-unit recording from the olfactory nerve is the method of choice. Although invasive, it is sensitive, robust, reproducible and independent of external salinity (unlike the electro-olfactogram [EOG], for example). Furthermore, it records a primary sensory input into the CNS, prior t
