Enamel proteins can be useful markers for assessment of the functional differentiation of neoplastic epithelium and the nature of extracellular matrices in odontogenic tumors. In the present study, we examined immunohistochemical localization of sheathlin, a recently cloned enamel sheath protein, in various odontogenic tumors to evaluate functional differentiation of tumor cells and the nature of hyalinous or calcified matrices in odontogenic neoplasms. Distinct immunolocalization of sheathlin was observed in the immature enamel of the tooth germ at the late bell stage. Secretory ameloblasts f

BACKGROUND: Ghost cells (GCs) are cells with distinct intracytoplasmic keratinization, which leads to the preservation of the cellular outline with a clear area corresponding to the previous nucleus location. GCs may show various patterns, such as degeneration, tissue granulation, and calcification. Their true nature and the mechanism regulating the conversion of odontogenic epithelial cells into GCs remain unclear. GC keratinization is different from normal keratinization as they are larger than keratotic squames, are frequently vacuolated, and have prominent nuclear membrane remnants. Few cy

Mixed odontogenic tumors include all tumors of the teeth both epithelial and mesenchymatous. Most of these tumors are rare (ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma and fibrodentinoma, odontoameloblastoma, calcified odontogenic cyst). Other tumors such as odontoma are frequent. They have in common a benign aspect, their often-fortuitous observation, a higher rate in the young adult and surgical treatment by complete exeresis preventing recurrence. They present a radiolucent lacuna but appear different depending on the presence or not of intralesional calcifications revealing the produ

Odontogenic Calcificant Cystic Tumor (OCCT) is an infrequent injury. It arises from odontogenic epithelial rests present in the maxilla, jaw or gum. Gorlin and col. described the OCCT for first time as an own pathological entity in 1962. Clinically, the OCCT represents 1% of the odontogenic injuries. It is possible to be found from the first decade to the eighth decade. It affects in same proportion the maxilla and the jaw, being the most common in the dented zones, with greater incidence in the first molar area. Two case reports of OCCT in two different ages, both in female individuals, one a

An 18-year-old female reported painful swelling in the left maxillary region 4 months after the extraction of tooth #15. Because incisional biopsy suggested ameloblastoma with clear-cell changes, segmental resection was performed. The microscopic examination of the excised tissue revealed histomorphologic diversity, with features of typical calcifying ghost cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) and a significant clear-cell component constituting more than 50% of the tumor mass without any features of malignancy. Clear cells were periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive and mucicarmine negative. CK19 was s

Calcified odontogenic epithelial cyst known as Gorlin's cyst is one of the benign odontogenic tumors of the maxillae. In imaging, the most revealing aspect is a well-limited osteolytic image with peripheral calcifications. The aim of the study was to highlight these radiological features to establish the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (OOC) denotes the odontogenic cyst that microscopically has an orthokeratinised epithelial lining. OOC is characterised by a less-aggressive behaviour and a low rate of recurrence. This report describes a case of OOC involving posterior part of the mandible that mimicked periapical cyst in a 14-year-old boy. The initial clinical diagnosis was given as periapical cyst based on the clinical and radiographical features. Enucleation of the cyst was performed and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. A definite diagnosis of OOC was made by histop

Despite the fact that cemento-ossifying fibromas of the maxilla may be quite large and locally aggressive, en-bloc excision is achieved by gentle blunt dissection, with the whole tumour mass peeled out from the adjacent structures. Until recently different fibro-osseous tumours that contained cementum were classified together as "cementomas". In 1992 The World Health Organization adopted a new classification that included these fibromas as benign osseous tumours. While such tumours of the mandible are common, those of the maxilla are rare. They are growth products of periodontal membrane remna

The epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumour (EOGCT) is considered as a solid 'neoplastic' variant of the calcifying odontogenic cyst and is an uncommon lesion for which various names have been proposed over the years. We describe here an extraosseous case occurring on the edentulous mandibular gingiva in the right bicuspid area of a 70-year-old woman. The lesion was a painless nodule that appeared clinically as a hyperplastic mass, which was considered to be of reactive nature. Radiographic examination showed a localised resorption of the underlying mandibular bone. The tumour was excised; th

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts and tumors are the most relevant lesions that affect the gnathic bones. These lesions have in common the formation of cystic areas and this common feature may suggest involvement of similar mechanisms. The hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), a responsive protein to hypoxia and caspase-3, an irreversible apoptosis marker, may contribute to cyst formation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the immunoexpression of these proteins in odontogenic cysts and tumors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty cases of ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) (n =

BACKGROUND: Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) accounts for a mere 2-6.8% of odontogenic tumors. The cytologic features of this uncommon entity are not well characterized and may prove challenging in atypical smears, as in our case.
CASE: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was performed on a right cheek swelling in a 15-year-old girl. Smears showed numerous polyhedral epithelial cells and occasional columnar cells with calcification and Congo red-negative extracellular homogenous material in the background. The initial diagnosis of CCOT on cytology was confirmed subsequently by hist

BACKGROUND: The incidence of impacted or embedded third molars accounts for approximately 98%. Since 1948, there are studies reporting pathological changes in an asymptomatic dental follicle. Controversy still exists for removal of asmptomatic impacted teeth. Hence, this study was performed to histologically evaluate soft tissue pathosis in the pericoronal tissues of impacted third molars with pericoronal radiolucency measuring up to 2.5 mm on orthopantomographs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one asymptomatic impacted third molars with follicular space of up to 2.5 mm on radiographs were inclu

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is an uncommon locally invasive odontogenic tumor regarded by many as a variant of calcifying odontogenic cyst. The peripheral variant of this clinical rarity appears as a well-circumscribed mass mimicking a nonspecific gingival enlargement. Microscopic appearance of odontogenic epithelium admixed with focal areas of dentinoid formation and sheets of ghost cells giving the definitive diagnosis of dentinogenic ghost cell tumor imply that microscopic examination is compulsory for any gingival mass. Van Gieson histochemical stain further confirmed the nature o

The radiographical differentiation of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) from dentigerous cysts, calcifying odontogenic cysts, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, odontogenic keratocysts and amelobastomas is sometimes difficult. We attempted to differentiate AOT from other lesions similar to AOT in radiographic findings using MRI. The MRI features of AOT in our three cases included homogeneous low SI in the cystic portion and homogeneous intermediate SI in the solid portion on T1WI, homogeneous high SI in the cystic portion and intermediate to slightly high SI in the solid portion on T2

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2008eng
BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cyst was described first by Gorlin et al. in 1962; since then several hundreds of cases had been reported. In 1981, Praetorius et al. proposed a widely used classification. Afterwards, several authors proposed different classifications and discussed its neoplastic potential. The 2005 WHO Classification of Odontogenic Tumours re-named this entity as calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (CCOT) and defined the clinico-pathological features of the ghost cell odontogenic tumours, the CCOT, the dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT) and the ghost cell odontogenic ca

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is a rare odontogenic cyst accounts for <2% of all odontogenic cysts. Simple unicystic CCOT is commonly encountered accounts for 65%, whereas other forms of CCOT are <3%. CCOT is associated with two or more odontogenic tumors, it is called combined odontogenic lesions or hybrid lesions. The aim of the present article is to report a rare case of CCOT and highlighting the clinical feature and treatment aspects of combined lesions. A 25-year-old female complained of pain and swelling in the left maxilla for 6 months. Examination revealed diffuse swelling

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a term used broadly to define lesions which were either cystic/solid in nature. However, a new term defining dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT), as its neoplastic counterpart, histopathologically showed the presence of dentinoid-like areas, ghost cells and ameloblastomatous-like odontogenic epithelium. This possesses a great challenge to an oral pathologist in diagnosing and differentiating it from solid multicystic ameloblastoma or COCs so as to ensure the biological behavior and pathogenesis behind its multifaceted nature. The author presents an excepti
