INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The most common type of odontogenic tumor is odontoma. Cases with at least one dimension (sagittal, axial, or coronal) ≥30 mm were categorized as giant odontomas. This study aimed to provide a scoping review of giant odontoma and present a case report.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6 years-old boy attended for a routine dental examination without any symptoms. A slight swelling of the right buccal cortex of the posterior maxilla was detected. Radiography views revealed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion with multiple tooth-like structures. The lesion caused displacement

A 12-year-old Japanese boy was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a radiopaque area on the left side of the mandible. Radiographic and computed tomographic examinations revealed a radiopaque lesion located on the lingual side, along with permanent tooth eruption. Several small tooth-like structures were noted within the lesion and the mandibular left second premolar was inclined in a mesial direction. An odontoma was clinically diagnosed and surgical removal by an endoscopic intraoral approach under general anesthesia was planned. Reports of oral surgery using an endoscopic approach ha

INTRODUCTION: Odontomas are considered as benign tumors of odontogenic tissue origin and are more over non-aggressive. They can also be categorized as hamartomas and are a result of developmental malformation of odontogenic tissues. As the name suggests, they are composed of mature tooth substances. They possess limited and slow growth potential and are well differentiated. They can be ectodermal, mesodermal or mixed in origin. Mixed variety may be further divided into compound or complex depending upon their radio-graphical resemblance to the tooth. Compound odontomes are reported to be twice

Odontomas are malformations of the dental tissues and may interfere with the eruption of the associated tooth. Complex composite odontoma (CO) was described as a distinct entity for the first time by Broca in 1866. This lesion takes place due to the developmental disturbances where the dental components are laid down in a disorganized manner, due to failure of normal morphodifferentiation. Very few cases of erupted complex composite odontomas have been reported in the literature. The case reported here is of an odontoma found in the left mandibular body, associated with an impacted second mola

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFO) are rare lesions and defined by the World Health Organisation as a tumour composed of a proliferation of odontogenic epithelium immersed in ectomesenchyme reminiscent of the interdental papilla. It also presents inductive processes leading to formation of enamel and dentine, confusing, histopathologically, with odontoma. Despite numerous efforts, there is still considerable confusion over its controversial aetiopathogenesis and treatment. A brief review of the literature on the clinical, pathological and therapeutic features of this lesion is repo

Delayed eruption of a single primary tooth is an uncommon event. Excluding a previous traumatic insult, the presence of a pericoronal odontogenic cyst or neoplasm is the primary cause for this abnormality. This case report describes the clinical and radiographic features of an ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a young child, who presented with delayed eruption of the primary mandibular canine and prominent buccal expansion. A differential diagnosis for mixed, radiolucent and radiopaque lesions of the jaws will be discussed.

In this case report, an eleven-year-old female presented to a rural dental clinic for routine dental examination. Upon evaluation of the dentition, the attending dentist discovered an over-retained primary tooth. Radiographically, a compound odontoma was present, gingival to an unerupted permanent maxillary left central incisor (number nine) and apical to the erupted primary central incisor (F). The odontoma and its overlying primary tooth were removed by an oral surgeon. The extraction site has healed uneventfully and an Orthodontic treatment plan was formulated. The etiology of odontomas is

Odontoma is one of the most frequent odontogenic tumors, and most cases occur in pediatric patients. A panoramic examination of an 11-year-old boy presenting with a chief complaint of dental caries revealed delayed eruption of the maxillary right second molar and a radiolucency around the crown. In addition, cone-beam computed tomography revealed slight calcifications within a cystic lesion measuring 20 × 18 × 13 mm, and demonstrated root resorption of the first molar. Following root canal treatment of the first molar, the lesion was removed under general anesthesia. Histological findings of t

Odontomas are considered hamartomatous lesions and are one of the two most common odontogenic tumors of the jaw. Odontomas are classified as compound or complex. Recently, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) and ameloblastic fibro-dentinoma were reclassified as developing odontomas. Though clinically odontomas are usually asymptomatic, they have adverse effects on adjacent teeth such as tooth impaction, delayed eruption, displacement of teeth, over-retention of teeth, and can give rise to odontogenic cysts within the jaw. We sought to evaluate the clinicoradiopathologic presentations of odontoma

The purpose of this paper is to describe the case of surgical management of massive compound odontoma with 36 denticles in a 9-year-boy who presented with a complaint of pain and swelling in mandibular left posterior region and retained 74. The denticles were removed after the removal of retained 74 completely and wound healing was observed. Odontomas are considered as hamartomatous dental malformation rather than true neoplasm of odontogenic origin. They are the most commonly occurring abnormally formed dental tissues that interfere with eruption of associated teeth. The eruption disturbances

INTRODUCTION: Odontomas constitute a developmental defect of hard dental tissues and are classified as benign odontogenic tumours. They are composed of all dental structures and tissues: enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp. As regards histomorphological features, two types of odontomas have been differentiated: complex and compound. Odontomas represent from 4.7% to 76% of odontogenic tumours. Their aetiology has not been fully understood, yet injury, infection and genetic factors are often named among the causes. Odontomas are usually detected by chance in radiographic images taken in relation t

Odontomas and dentigerous cysts are common findings for practicing dental professionals. However, simultaneous occurrence of pathologies like odontoma and dentigerous cyst are uncommon and their diagnosis based on the radiographic appearance alone is a challenge to overcome. They together are a potential for complications like attaining large size, root resorption, destruction of the jaw bones and sometimes neoplastic changes like ameloblastoma. This paper presents a case of complex odontoma associated with dentigerous cyst in relation to a retained deciduous tooth in the maxillary anterior re

Transmigration or intraosseous migration of mandibular canine is a very rare phenomenon. Specific aetiology and mechanism of transmigration is still unclear. Majority of these transmigrated canines are impacted, asymptomatic and involve the left mandible. This article describes a rare case of transmigrated mandibular right permanent canine associated with a retained deciduous right canine and an odontoma in a 25-year-old man with a follow-up of 3 years. The present case report also highlights the importance of early diagnosis and periodic monitoring of impacted teeth with panoramic radiography

Odontomas are a heterogeneous group of jaw bone lesions, classified as odontogenic tumors which usually include well-diversified dental tissues. Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumors and generally they are asymptomatic. Two types of odontomas are described: compound and complex based on either the appearance of well-organized tooth-like structures (compound odontomas) or on a mass of disorganized odontogenic tissues (complex odontomas). Compound odontomas have a predilection for the anterior maxilla, whereas complex odontomas have a predilection for the posterior mandible. O

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumors, and are classified as either compound or complex lesions. Although its underlying etiology remains unclear, a number of factors appear to be involved (e.g., prior trauma). The lesions are generally diagnosed in the second decade of life, often in the context of routine dental X-ray examinations. A complex odontoma is described in a 22-year-old woman referring discomfort due to overinfection following its aperture into the oral cavity in the distal alveolar region of 2.6. Initial treatment consisted of antibiotics and antiinflammatory drugs. Com

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or Gorlin's cyst categorized as a distinct entity by Gorlin et al. in 1962. It is a rare benign developmental cystic lesion that accounts for less than 1% of all odontogenic cysts. It can occur in association with various types of odontogenic tumors such as odontomas. COC is a hybrid lesion of the jaw presenting a manifold variety of clinical behaviors and histopathological characteristics including cystic, solid (neoplastic), and aggressive forms. COC exhibits diversity in terms of its clinical presentations, histopathologic features, and biological behavior.
