An Interprofessional Approach to Continuing Education With Mass Casualty Simulation: Planning and Execution.

Many natural and man-made disasters require the assistance from teams of health care professionals. Knowing that continuing education about disaster simulation training is essential to nursing students, nurses, and emergency first responders (e.g., emergency medical technicians, firefighters, police officers), a university in the northeastern United States planned and implemented an interprofessional mass casualty incident (MCI) disaster simulation using the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) management framework. The school of nursing and University Volunteer Ambulance Corps (UVAC)

In a Spirit of Restoration: A Phenomenology of Nursing Practice and the Criminal Justice System.

Conditions within jails and prisons are a public health crisis, necessitating critical reform measures. An innovative collaboration between a Midwestern College of Nursing and Cook County Department of Corrections provides students with the opportunity to develop health education for both those detained in the jail and the corrections officers. A phenomenological approach, recognizing the importance of intuitive and cognitive understanding, is offered as a framework for practice in complex environments. Principles of restorative justice provide a bridge between primary, secondary, and tertiary

Why board of nursing disciplinary actions do not always yield the expected results.

One of the ways boards of nursing serve to protect the public health, safety, and welfare is by removing from practice those nurses who fail to meet recognized standards of care or otherwise pose a public threat. Self-reporting and discovery through criminal background checks and reports from the court system or other regulatory bodies represent only small numbers of those disciplined. Most complaints investigated by a board are reported by nursing administrators, either chief nursing officers or nurse managers. Frequently, the reporting nurses provide the board with information from their own

Gradual electronic health record implementation: new insights on physician and patient adaptation.

PURPOSE: Although there is significant interest in implementation of electronic health records (EHRs), limited data have been published in the United States about how physicians, staff, and patients adapt to this implementation process. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of EHR implementation, especially regarding physician-patient communication and behaviors and patients' responses. METHODS: We undertook a 22-month, triangulation design, mixed methods study of gradual EHR implementation in a residency-based family medicine outpatient center. Data collection included part

Diagnosing and treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Gerontological nurses play a critical role in the early recognition of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition that accounts for approximately 50% of vertigo in older adults. BPPV results in vertigo when debris collects in one or more of the semicircular canals, most typically the posterior canal. It may be differentiated from other forms of vertigo because it results in dizziness when recumbent or with head position changes. BPPV may be successfully treated with repositioning therapy, such as the Epley maneuver. Nurses working in medical offices, longterm care facilities, and

[Mental health of hospital nurses].

The mental health status of 79 woman hospital nurses and 69 woman office workers with less than three years of service were examined with the "mental disorder" scale and the "loss of morale" scale in a cross-sectional survey. The mentally disordered status characterized by "neurasthenia symptoms" and "feeling job hard," which is similar to "burn-out syndrome," was observed in nurses especially in their first year of service. Multivariate analysis shows that their mental health status is mainly associated with the severity of job and their stress coping behavior. When these confounding variable

Indoor air quality-induced respiratory symptoms of a hospital staff in Iran.

The ambient air of hospitals contains a wide range of biological and chemical pollutants. Exposure to these indoor pollutants can be hazardous to the health of hospital staff. This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting indoor air quality and their effect on the respiratory health of staff members in a busy Iranian hospital. We surveyed 226 hospital staff as a case group and 222 office staff as a control group. All the subjects were asked to fill in a standard respiratory questionnaire. Pulmonary function parameters were simultaneously measured via a spirometry test. Environmental measur

Blood pressure measurement: Should technique define targets?

Accurate assessment of blood pressure (BP) is the cornerstone of hypertension management. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effect of medical personnel presence during BP measurement by automated oscillometric BP (AOBP) and to compare resting office BP by AOBP to daytime average BP by 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM). This study is a prospective randomized cross-over trial, conducted in a referral population. Patients underwent measurements of casual and resting office BP by AOBP. Resting BP was measured as either unattended (patient alone in the room during resting and mea

Workplace violence against emergency versus non-emergency nurses in Mansoura university hospitals, Egypt.

Workplace violence (WPV) against nurses is a common but neglected problem in Egypt. The objectives are to estimate the prevalence and associated risk factors of different types of violence against nurses working in the emergency hospital compared with those working in non-emergency clinics, circumstances of violence, type of perpetrators, and victims' response. This cross-sectional comparative study was carried out at Mansoura University Hospitals, Egypt, during January 2013. The data were collected through the adapted version of a self-administered questionnaire developed by the International

Eliminating the human factor in office blood pressure measurement.

Factors related to the physician/nurse and patient and their interaction are potential sources of error in manual office blood pressure (MOBP). The use of automated sphygmomanometers to record blood pressure (BP) with the patient alone reduces measurement error and minimizes anxiety-related increases in BP, thus eliminating the "white-coat" response. Comparative studies have shown the cut-point for a normal automated office BP (AOBP), awake ambulatory BP, and home BP (<135/85 mmHg) to be similar, providing the patient does not rest for a prolonged period before the first AOBP reading, as recom

Unpredictability of blood pressures recorded outside the clinic in the treated hypertensive patient.

Ambulatory blood pressure profiles were obtained with the Remler M2000, a portable semiautomatic blood pressure recorder, in 38 chronically treated hypertensive patients who continued to have blood pressures measured by their physician greater than 140 mm Hg systolic and greater than 89 mm Hg diastolic. On the average, ambulatory recorded blood pressures were significantly lower (151/94 +/- 26/13 mm Hg; mean +/- SD) than those determined at the clinic not only by a physician (179/109 +/- 22/11 mm Hg), but by a nurse (163/101 +/- 24/10 mm Hg). Individual mean recorded ambulatory blood pressures

Condylomata acuminata (venereal warts).

Condylomata acuminata (venereal warts) is a sexually transmitted disease which has increased markedly in both adults and children during the past 15 years. The human papilloma virus is notoriously difficult to treat and often requires multiple office visits utilizing a variety of treatment modalities. Enhancing patient compliance through an increased understanding of the infection, its transmission, pathogenesis, comfort measures and evaluation of the patient's reaction to the diagnosis is essential. Despite the fact that the majority of cases can be managed within an office setting, the nurse

Nonadherence to Recommended Guidelines for Blood Pressure Measurement.

Accuracy of blood pressure readings, both in the physician's office and at home, is crucial in properly managing hypertension. Few studies have investigated adherence to measurement guidelines. This study focused on two important aspects of blood pressure measurement: waiting time before measurement and number of readings taken. A total of 103 patients completed self-report questionnaires about office and home blood pressure measurements, with 77% reporting that physician measurements were obtained without waiting, and 56% reporting that only one reading was obtained. The proportions were even

Origin of a Musculoskeletal Guideline: Caring for Older Workers.

Today's employers are hiring a more age-diverse workforce. As Americans work longer, age-related changes often create activity limitations. Musculoskeletal disorders affect many older workers heightening their risk of workplace injury. Compounded by multiple comorbidities, older workers will need occupational health nurses with expert knowledge to maintain safe and productive workplaces. Older workers do not experience as many injuries as younger workers, but when they are injured, recovery is longer. The author developed and conducted a survey of New Jersey occupational health nurses. The res
