Effect of nifedipine on oxygen delivery in canine asymmetric oleic acid lung injury.

Increasing the ratio of tissue oxygen delivery (DO2) to oxygen consumption can improve the survival of critically ill patients, including those with acute respiratory failure. However, under conditions of ventilation/perfusion mismatch, the use of inotropic or vasodilator drugs to augment cardiac output could, in turn, worsen venous admixture. In a canine model of asymmetric oleic acid-induced pulmonary edema, we examined this possibility by studying the effect of 20 and 40-micrograms/kg doses of parenteral nifedipine on oxygenation variables, venous admixture, and intrapulmonary blood flow di

Promethazine or DPPD pretreatment attenuates oleic acid-induced injury in isolated canine lungs.

Oleic acid causes pulmonary edema by increasing capillary endothelial permeability, although the mechanism of this action is uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that the damage is an oxidant injury initiated by oleic acid, using isolated blood-perfused canine lung lobes. The lobes were dilated with papaverine and perfused in zone III with a constant airway pressure of 3 cmH2O. Changes in isogravimetric capillary pressure (Pc,i) and capillary filtration coefficient (Kf,C) were used as indices of alterations in microvascular permeability in lungs treated with silicone fluid (n = 3), oleic acid (

Effect of oleic acid on canine gastroduodenal motility, pyloric diameter and gastric emptying.

The motility of the antrum, duodenum and pylorus was recorded with strain gauge transducers and induction coils in conscious beagle dogs. The effect of oleic acid on gastroduodenal motility and on the pyloric diameter was studied in the interdigestive state and during emptying of a mashed potato meal. The flow of digesta was observed fluoroscopically. Gastric emptying was measured by planimetry of the radiopaque gastric silhouette. The intraduodenal injection of oleic acid reduced the diameter of the pylorus in the empty stomach. In the digestive state oleic acid diminished gastric emptying of

Dietary palmitic acid to oleic acid ratio modulates energy metabolism and biological rhythms in young healthy Japanese males.

The present study investigated the potential role of the composition of dietary fatty acids in the regulation of biological rhythms, such as the sleep architecture, core body temperature and leukocyte clock gene expression, in subjects fed meals rich in palmitic acid (PA) or oleic acid (OA). Eleven males participated in two sessions of indirect calorimetry in a whole-room metabolic chamber. In each session, subjects consumed three meals rich in PA (44·3 % of total fat as PA and 42·3 % as OA) or OA (11·7 % of total fat as PA and 59·3 % as OA) in the metabolic chamber. The ratio of PA to OA in p

Prenatal Administration of Oleic Acid or Linolenic Acid Reduces Neuromorphological and Cognitive Alterations in Ts65dn Down Syndrome Mice.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive impairments that characterize Down syndrome (DS) have been attributed to brain hypocellularity due to neurogenesis impairment during fetal stages. Thus, enhancing prenatal neurogenesis in DS could prevent or reduce some of the neuromorphological and cognitive defects found in postnatal stages. OBJECTIVES: As fatty acids play a fundamental role in morphogenesis and brain development during fetal stages, in this study, we aimed to enhance neurogenesis and the cognitive abilities of the Ts65Dn (TS) mouse model of DS by administering oleic or linolenic acid. METHODS: In

Study on the thermal oxidation mechanism of oleic acid based on density functional theory.

CONTEXT: Lipid oxidation degrades food quality by producing harmful aldehydes, ketones, and acids. This study integrates density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic analysis to elucidate the thermal oxidation mechanism of oleic acid using a 4-octene model. Mechanistic insights reveal distinct early- and mid-stage processes: the initial phase is dominated by low-barrier allyl-oxygen bonding (< 10.0 kcal/mol), while allyl isomerization (> 60.0 kcal/mol) is negligible. Deep oxidation involves four pathways: 1) O-O• radical attack on adjacent carbons (29.2/11.3 kcal/mol), forming aldehydes; 2) per

[Effects of hyperbaric oxygen on the acute lung injury induced by oleic acid in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on acute lung injury (ALI) induced by oleic acid (OA) in rats. METHODS: Eighty healthy Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into four groups. In OA group (n=30), ALI was produced by injection of OA 0.15 ml/kg through tail vein. Ten rats were randomly selected and sacrificed after injection of OA at the time of 4 hours, 3 days, and 7 days, respectively. In OA plus HBO group (n=20), rats received HBO intervention in a special box with oxygen of 2.5 atm (1 atm=101.325 kPa) for 90 minutes. Ten rats were randomly respectively sa

The changes of plasma endothelin in oleic acid-induced acute lung injury and their implication.

The changes of pulmonary arterial and pulmonary venous plasma endothelin (ET) level in oleic acid (OA)--induced lung injury (ALI) rats were observed. After the ALI model of rats was established by intravenous injection of OA, blood samples were taken from a right cardiac catheter inserted via the right external jugular vein into the pulmonary artery to determine the plasma ET levels by using radioimmunoassay before OA injection, and 2 h and 4 h after OA injection. At the same time, arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2) and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) were measured to evaluate the role of

Erythrocyte membrane stearic to oleic acid ratio in carcinoma of the gallbladder: a preliminary study.

AIMS: The role of erythrocyte membrane stearic to oleic acid ratio (saturation index) as a marker of malignancy is still unclear, though an association has been found in colorectal carcinoma, bronchogenic carcinoma, leukaemia, lymphoma and in hepatic malignancies. This study aims to investigate the role of the saturation index in primary carcinoma of the gallbladder. METHODS: This paper describes the results of the stearic to oleic acid ratio determination in 26 subjects with either cholelithiasis or carcinoma of the gallbladder, also including a group of age- and sex-matched controls, using

The Different Mechanisms of Lipid Accumulation in Hepatocytes Induced by Oleic Acid/Palmitic Acid and High-Fat Diet.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the primary chronic liver disease worldwide, mainly manifested by hepatic steatosis. Hepatic lipids may be derived from dietary intake, plasma free fatty acid (FFA) uptake, or hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL). Currently, cellular and animal models of hepatocellular steatosis are widely used to study the pathogenesis of NAFLD and to investigate therapeutic agents. However, whether there are differences between the in vivo and in vitro models of the mechanisms that cause lipid accumulation has not been reported. We used OA/PA-induced NCTC 1469 cells

Myo-inositol alters the effects of glucose, leptin and insulin on placental palmitic acid and oleic acid metabolism.

Well-regulated placental palmitic acid (PA) and oleic acid (OA) metabolism is vital for optimal placental function and fetal development, but dysregulation occurs with gestational diabetes (GDM). We hypothesized that such dysregulation might arise from increased maternofetal glucose, leptin or insulin concentrations present in GDM, and that dysregulated PA and OA lipid metabolism could be moderated by myo-inositol, a natural polyol and potential GDM intervention. Placental explants from 21 women were incubated with stable isotope-labelled 13 C-PA or 13 C-OA for 48 h. Explants were treated with

Release of neurotransmitter amino acids from synaptosomes: enhancement of calcium-independent efflux by oleic and arachidonic acids.

The release of preloaded [14C]neuroactive amino acids (glutamic acid, proline, gamma-aminobutyric acid) from rat brain synaptosomes can occur via a time-dependent, Ca2+-independent process. This Ca2+-independent efflux is increased by compounds that activate Na+ channels (veratridine, scorpion venoms), by the ionophore gramicidin D, and by low concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid and arachidonic acid). Saturated fatty acids have no effect on the efflux process. Neither saturated nor unsaturated fatty acids have an effect on the release of [14C]leucine, an amino acid not known

Waterproofing of cellulosic materials by hydrophobization with oleic acid: Thermochemical modification and structural insights.

Cellulosic paper is naturally porous and hydrophilic due to the presence of free hydroxyl groups, which limit its effectiveness in wet environments. Consequently, the industry faces ongoing challenges in developing environmentally friendly and sustainable methods to produce hydrophobic cellulosic paper. In this study, we produced a smooth hydrophobic paper by grafting long-chain oleic acid (OA) onto the cellulose surface through an esterification reaction via a thermochemical process. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the hydrophobic paper were extensively characterized using

Oleic acid induces apoptosis and autophagy in the treatment of Tongue Squamous cell carcinomas.

Oleic acid (OA), a main ingredient of Brucea javanica oil (BJO), is widely known to have anticancer effects in many tumors. In this study, we investigated the anticancer effect of OA and its mechanism in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). We found that OA effectively inhibited TSCC cell proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner. OA treatment in TSCC significantly induced cell cycle G0/G1 arrest, increased the proportion of apoptotic cells, decreased the expression of CyclinD1 and Bcl-2, and increased the expression of p53 and cleaved caspase-3. OA also obviously induced the format

Effects of methylene blue in acute lung injury induced by oleic acid in rats.

BACKGROUND: In acute lung injury (ALI), rupture of the alveolar-capillary barrier determines the protein-rich fluid influx into alveolar spaces. Previous studies have reported that methylene blue (MB) attenuates such injuries. This investigation was carried out to study the MB effects in pulmonary capillary permeability. METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into five groups: (I) Sham: saline bolus; (II) MB, MB infusion for 2 h; (III) oleic acid (OA), OA bolus; (IV) MB/OA, MB infusion for 2 h, and at 5 min after from the beginning, concurrently with an OA bolus; and (V) OA/MB, OA bolus, and after

Oleic acid supports mitochondrial function during lipolytic and pro-oxidant challenges in bovine adipocytes.

Increased energy demand during the transition period in dairy cows leads to excessive lipolysis, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in adipose tissue (AT). Mitochondria play a central role in fatty acid (FA) oxidation and redox regulation during negative energy balance. In humans, palmitic acid (PA) is linked to mitochondrial stress, whereas oleic acid (OA) supports normal function. However, the impact of acute lipolytic or pro-oxidant challenges on mitochondrial function in bovine adipocytes, and whether that impact can be mitigated by FA supplementation, remains unclear.
