Diet containing stearic acid increased food intake in mice by reducing serum leptin compared with oleic acid.

In today's society, obesity is becoming increasingly serious, and controlling food intake and maintaining weight balance have become increasingly important. Here, we found that a stearic acid diet can increase food intake without causing obesity in mice compared with an oleic acid diet. Stearic acid increases food intake in mice by reducing serum leptin and increasing NPY neuronal excitability through the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. The impaired anorexic effect of leptin is probably due to repressive cholesterol-oxysterol-LXR-α/SREBP-1c-mediated leptin expression in mouse iWAT. At the same time, we fo

Developmental changes in lipid and fatty acid metabolism and the inhibition by in ovo feeding oleic acid in Muscovy duck embryogenesis.

Hepatic lipid and fatty acid (FA) metabolism are critical for regulating energetic homeostasis during embryogenesis. At present, it remains unclear how an exogenous FA intervention affects embryonic development in an avian embryo model. In Exp. 1, 30 fertilized eggs were sampled on embryonic days (E) 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and the day of hatch (DOH) to determine the critical period of lipid metabolism. In Exp. 2, a total of 120 fertilized eggs were divided into two groups (60 eggs/group) for in ovo feeding (IOF) procedures on E25. Eggs were injected into the yolk sac with PBS as the control gr

Prenatal Administration of Oleic Acid or Linolenic Acid Reduces Neuromorphological and Cognitive Alterations in Ts65dn Down Syndrome Mice.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive impairments that characterize Down syndrome (DS) have been attributed to brain hypocellularity due to neurogenesis impairment during fetal stages. Thus, enhancing prenatal neurogenesis in DS could prevent or reduce some of the neuromorphological and cognitive defects found in postnatal stages. OBJECTIVES: As fatty acids play a fundamental role in morphogenesis and brain development during fetal stages, in this study, we aimed to enhance neurogenesis and the cognitive abilities of the Ts65Dn (TS) mouse model of DS by administering oleic or linolenic acid. METHODS: In

Microwave-driven oleic acid esterification over chlorosulfonic acid-treated hydroxyapatite: synergism for intensified biodiesel production.

Treating hydroxyapatite (HAP) with sulfonic acid without structural destruction remains challenging owing to the sensitivity of HAP to acidic pH. In this work, natural derived HAP was prepared using natural phosphate via a dissolution/precipitation process. Notwithstanding the challenge, the prepared HAP was treated with three concentrations of chlorosulfonic acid in dichloromethane to prepare HAP-S1, HAP-S2 and HAP-S3 depending on the acid content under carefully controlled conditions. The treatment of HAP with the lowest acid concentration led to the preservation of the apatite framework wit

Micellar oleic and eicosapentaenoic acid but not linoleic acid influences the beta-carotene uptake and its cleavage into retinol in rats.

Improving the bioavailability of beta-carotene is vital to manage vitamin A deficiency. The influence of micellar oleic (OA), linoleic (LA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids on plasma beta-carotene response and its conversion to retinol has been studied in rats employing single (9 h time course) and repeated (10 days) dose administrations. After a single dose, the levels (area under the curve) of plasma beta-carotene and retinyl palmitate in OA and EPA groups were higher (p < 0.05) by 13, 7 and 11, 6 folds than LA group. The liver beta-carotene level in OA and EPA groups were higher (p < 0.05)

Hepatic-portal oleic acid inhibits feeding more potently than hepatic-portal caprylic acid in rats.

In several human and animal studies, medium-chain triglycerides decreased food intake more than did long-chain triglycerides. It is possible that faster uptake and metabolism of medium-chain fatty acids in the liver is responsible for this difference. To test this hypothesis we compared the feeding effects of hepatic portal vein (HPV) infusion of the medium-chain fatty acid caprylic acid (CA) with those of the long-chain fatty acid oleic acid (OA). Contrary to our expectation, six-h HPV infusion of 14 microg/min (50 nmol/min) OA robustly inhibited feeding, whereas infusion of 22 or 220 microg/

Oleic acid enhances the proliferation of gallbladder cancer cells via the GPR120/ERK pathway.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a highly aggressive malignancy exhibiting a correlation between increased body mass index and increased risk of developing GBC. In obese individuals, the release of free fatty acids from the adipose tissue into the circulating blood is augmented. However, the role of oleic acid (OA), one of the most abundant monounsaturated fatty acids in the plasma, in GBC cell proliferation has not been determined. In this study, we investigated the effects of OA on the proliferation of GBC cells. We focused on the role of G protein-coupled receptor 120/free fatty acid receptor 4

Oleic acid Enriched Leciplexes as Novel Mucoadhesive Cationic Nanocarriers of Agomelatine for Glaucoma Treatment.

Agomelatine (AGO) is a dual action drug. Being serotonin receptor antagonist, AGO is orally administered for depression treatment. Here in, AGO was used for intraocular pressure management due to its agonistic activity on the melatonin receptors in the eyes. AGO is a BCS II drug, with low oral bioavailability and massive first-pass metabolism. Oleic acid enriched leciplexes were investigated as novel mucoadhesive cationic nanocarriers to improve AGO's ocular bioavailability and prolong its pharmacological effect. Twenty-four AGO loaded leciplexes were fabricated by single-step procedure. AGO:

Self-assembled leuprolide-oleic acid nanoparticles encapsulating docetaxel for synergistic drug delivery.

In the present study, an amphiphilic leuprolide acetate (LEU)-oleic acid (OA) conjugate (LOC) was synthesized by conjugating the peptide drug LEU with OA to form self-assembled nanoparticles (LON). This may maximize the synergistic effectiveness of fatty acids and anticancer drugs in prostate cancer. Docetaxel (DTX)-encapsulating LON (LOND) have also been developed for triple-synergistic drug delivery. LON and LOND retained a uniformly spherical morphology and had particle sizes ranging 130.6-159.1 ± 3.1 nm, depending on the freeze drying or redispersion process. Neither LON nor encapsulation

Development of skin sebum medium and inhibition of lipase activity in Cutibacterium acnes by oleic acid.

Cutibacterium acnes is associated with the exacerbated inflammation of acne vulgaris, which occurs through the immune induction and pathogenicity factor production. Sebum, which is not present in the growth medium currently used to study acne, is present in acne pustules in differing concentrations among the pathological stages, such as the initial formation and inflammatory phase. To evaluate the effect of C. acnes on inflammation exacerbation in acne pustules in vitro, we developed an skin sebum medium containing artificial sebum and studied the growth and pathogenicity factor production of

Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A Directly Affects Sebocytes and Modulates Oleic Acid-Induced Lipogenesis.

Excess sebum (seborrhea) results in oily skin and is associated with large pore size and acne. Studies in healthy, seborrheic volunteers have reported that intradermal injection of commercial preparations of botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) (onabotulinumtoxinA, abobotulinumtoxinA, and incobotulinumtoxinA) reduced sebum production, and thus, skin oiliness and pore size. The mechanism for these effects has not been fully elucidated; however, several theories involving direct or indirect effects of BoNT/A on neuronal and/or dermal cells (e.g., sebocytes) have been proposed. In the present stu

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by oleic acid-capped CdS, CdSe, and CdS0.75Se0.25 alloy nanocrystals.

Photocatalytic generation of hydrogen by using oleic acid-capped CdS, CdSe, and CdS(0.75)Se(0.25) alloy nanocrystals (quantum dots) has been investigated under visible-light irradiation by employing Na(2)S and Na(2)SO(3) as hole scavengers. Highly photostable CdS(0.75)Se(0.25) alloy nanocrystals gave the highest hydrogen evolution rate (1466 μmol h(-1) g(-1)), which was about three times higher than that of CdS and seven times higher than that of CdSe.

Potent antimicrobial activity of bone cement encapsulating silver nanoparticles capped with oleic acid.

Bone cement is widely used in surgical treatments for the fixation for orthopaedic devices. Subsequently, 2-3% of patients undergoing these procedures develop infections that are both a major health risk for patients and a cost for the health service providers; this is also aggravated by the fact that antibiotics are losing efficacy because of the rising resistance of microorganisms to these substances. In this study, oleic acid capped silver nanoparticles (NP) were encapsulated into Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based bone cement samples at various ratios. Antimicrobial activity against Me

Development of marker-free transgenic Jatropha plants with increased levels of seed oleic acid.

BACKGROUND: Jatropha curcas is recognized as a new energy crop due to the presence of the high amount of oil in its seeds that can be converted into biodiesel. The quality and performance of the biodiesel depends on the chemical composition of the fatty acids present in the oil. The fatty acids profile of the oil has a direct impact on ignition quality, heat of combustion and oxidative stability. An ideal biodiesel composition should have more monounsaturated fatty acids and less polyunsaturated acids. Jatropha seed oil contains 30% to 50% polyunsaturated fatty acids (mainly linoleic acid) whi
