The chronic effects of CuO and ZnO nanoparticles on Eisenia fetida in relation to the bioavailability in aged soils.

The bioavailability and bioaccumulation of metal-based engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in soils need to be evaluated in environmentally relevant scenarios. The aim of this study was an analysis of potentially available metal-component ENPs (nano-ZnO and nano-CuO) in soils. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were used to examine the bioaccumulation potential of ENPs. Micro-particles (micro-ZnO and micro-CuO) and metal salts (ZnCl2 and CuCl2) were used to evaluate the nano-effect and the activity of dissolved ions, respectively. Zn- and Cu-compounds were added to sandy loam and silt loam at a concentra

Combined effects of goethite nanoparticles with metallic contaminants and an organophosphorus pesticide on Eisenia andrei.

The effects of mixtures of nanoparticles (NPs) and other chemicals have been poorly studied in terrestrial invertebrates. In this study, we investigated the effects of binary mixtures of goethite (α-FeOOH) NPs and metallic (Cd and Pb) or organic (chlorpyrifos, CPF) contaminants in Eisenia andrei earthworms. We used the filter paper contact test to evaluate (i) the uptake of NPs in organisms exposed to the mixtures of NPs+Metals and NPs+CPF and (ii) the potential effects of the mixture of NPs+CPF on the CPF-induced inhibition of the biomarker enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and carboxyleste

Evaluation of combined noxious effects of siduron and cadmium on the earthworm Eisenia fetida.

Environmental contaminants do not often occur as individual chemicals but rather in complex mixtures whose joint effects can create a strong toxicity to surrounding organisms. To determine the combined harmful effects of siduron (herbicide) and cadmium (heavy metal) toward Eisenia fetida earthworms, samples of worm's coelomocytes were subjected to siduron and cadmium (Cd) at sublethal concentrations (lower than LC50)-siduron 0, 0.8, 2.4, and 7.2 μg cm-2 Cd 0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 μg cm-2 in filter paper contact assay, both as individual compounds and combinations. Bioavailability of CeO2 and SnO2 nanoparticles evaluated by dietary uptake in the earthworm Eisenia fetida and sequential extraction of soil and feed.

The growing number of nanotechnology products on the market will inevitably lead to the release of engineered nanomaterials with potential risk to humans and environment. This study set out to investigate the exposure of soil biota to engineered nanoparticles (NPs). Cerium dioxide (CeO2 NPs) and tin dioxide nanoparticles (SnO2 NPs) were radiolabelled using neutron activation, and employed to assess the uptake and excretion kinetics in the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Through sequential extraction, NPs bioavailability in two contrasting soils and in earthworm feed was also investigated. Neither Ce

Digging into Understudied Sediments: What Lumbriculus variegatus Reveals about Fluoxetine Exposure from the Cellular to the Individual Level.

Sediments accumulate persistent and toxic compounds, yet assessing their effects on benthic species remains challenging. Especially antidepressants, such as fluoxetine, are of concern due to their sediment affinity and potential to disrupt neuroendocrine functions at low concentrations. This study investigated the chronic effects of fluoxetine in the sediment-dwelling worm Lumbriculus variegatus through two 28-day sediment exposures (0.00025-25 mg/kg) conducted in accordance with OECD 225, with modifications. Endpoints encompassed multiple biological levels, including biochemical markers of ne

Primary entry route of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into earthworms in contaminated soil: oral ingestion or dermal absorption?

Soil contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic, poses significant ecological risks. Earthworms, the key bioindicator in terrestrial ecosystems, are critically exposed to these pollutants through multiple pathways. However, the dominant route of PAH uptake-whether dermal or oral-remains poorly quantified and visually validated, limiting accurate risk assessment and mechanistic understanding. The study identified dermal absorption as the predominant pathway for phenanthrene (a model PAH) uptake by earthworms (Eisenia fetida), accountin

Assessing the accumulation of microplastics in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) using traditional bioaccumulation modeling and synchrotron-based microcomputed tomography.

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a ubiquitous contaminant in terrestrial ecosystems. Earthworms, which play key roles in soil structure, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem function, are important bioindicators for assessing MP exposure and fate. However, uncertainties remain regarding MP toxicokinetics in earthworms, including ingestion dynamics, retention, and the potential for translocation across the gut epithelium. This study investigated the movement and fate of MPs in Eisenia fetida by quantifying uptake and elimination across five common MP morphologies (films, fibers, foams, fragment

Novel Approach in the Synthesis of Some Pyrimidines with Eminent Toxicological Effects towards Aphis gossypii (Glover, 1887) and Outstanding Safety against Earthworms (Aporrectodea caliginosa).

This study reports the synthesis and bioevaluation of ten novel pyranothiazolopyrimidine derivatives. Their insecticidal efficacy against Aphis gossypii (Glover, 1887) revealed compounds 3 and 10 as lead candidates, exhibiting toxicity comparable to the commercial standard acetamiprid insecticide. Notably, these compounds demonstrated a markedly safer ecotoxicological profile toward the earthworms (Aporrectodea caliginosa), with LC50 values orders of magnitude higher than acetamiprid over 5- and 10-day exposures. Application also induced measurable changes in soil chemistry. These findings ide

Temperature-metabolism relationships above and below the body fluid freezing point in the freeze-tolerant white worm, Enchytraeus albidus.

Enchytraeus albidus is a freeze-tolerant oligochaete with potential for long-term cryopreservation storage as live feed in aquaculture. In this study, we measured the metabolic rate (MR) of E. albidus across a range of temperatures (+20 to -14 °C) in both unfrozen and frozen states using intermittent flow-through CO2 respirometry. Our results demonstrate an exponential decrease in MR with declining temperature, and a markedly steeper decline below the freezing point of body fluids. Frozen worms exhibited a Q10 of 24.1, in contrast to 2.2 in unfrozen worms, indicating significant metabolic depr

Investigating the in-vitro and in-vivo potential of Eudrilus eugeniae coelomic fluid fractions on cancer cell lines: insights into mechanisms and therapeutic implications.

Current cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, frequently have significant adverse effects, which restrict treatment options due to their toxicity. It is crucial to identify supplementary therapies using natural compounds that can inhibit tumor growth without causing severe side effects. This study explored the anti-cancer potential of earthworm coelomic fluid (ECF) protein (CF-P), non-protein (CF-NP), and crude (CF-C) from Eudrilus eugeniae against various human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, ME180, HEPG2, and HT-29). Rapid fate of benzophenone in artificial soil and comprehensive toxicity assessment in Eisenia fetida.

Benzophenone (BP) is a widely used organic UV filter in personal care products. Despite its frequent detection in soil ecosystems, its toxicity to soil biota has not been extensively explored. This study investigates the effects of BP on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed in artificial soil. Soil degradation kinetics followed a single first-order model at low (1.69 mg/kg) and medium (3.39 mg/kg) concentrations, and a biphasic double first-order in parallel model at high (16.9 mg/kg) concentration. The calculated DT50 (time to 50 % degradation) and DT90 (time to 90 % degradation) ranged from 0

The Early Bird Catches the Parasite: Potential Invertebrate Pathway for Baylisascaris procyonis to Infect Songbirds.

Baylisascaris procyonis larva migrans is a debilitating and potentially lethal zoonotic, parasitic condition that can infect a large variety of paratenic hosts, including birds and mammals and even humans. The typical pathway to develop baylisascariasis is to ingest B. procyonis eggs from contaminated feces or through contaminated soil where contaminated fecal matter has decayed. I hypothesized that earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) living in soils contaminated with B. procyonis eggs from decayed feces of its definitive host, raccoons (Procyon lotor), would incidentally ingest B. procyonis egg

Exposure of Enchytraeus crypticus to ciprofloxacin - A multi- and transgenerational study.

The increased consumption of antibiotics and their partial metabolism by the human and animal body have led to the frequent identification of such compounds in various environmental matrices. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is one of the most widely used antibiotics worldwide and it has low mobility and high sorption to soil, leading to the potential to accumulate and persist on organic fertilizers (manure and sewage sludge) and agricultural soils. Therefore, the presence of CIP in the agricultural environment has become an emerging concern as it may negatively affect soil organisms and soil quality, and

Bacterial dispersal enhances the elimination of active fecal coliforms during vermicomposting of fruit and vegetable wastes: The overlooked role of earthworm mucus.

Earthworms play a pivotal role in the elimination of fecal coliforms during vermicomposting of fruit and vegetable waste (FVWs). However, the specific mechanisms underlying the action of earthworm mucus remain unclear. This study investigated the mechanisms of fecal coliform reduction related to earthworm mucus during FVWs vermicomposting by comparing treatments with and without earthworms. The results show that the secretion of earthworm mucus decreased by 13.93 % during the startup phase, but significantly (P < 0.001) increased by 57.80 % during the degradation phase. Compared to the control

Dietary deprivation reduces the deleterious effects of carbaryl on the survival and activity of both catalase and acetylcholinesterase in earthworms.

Dietary restriction (DR) and dietary deprivation (DD) have been shown to be significantly beneficial in terms of lifespan gains and stress alleviation in invertebrate and vertebrate species. Such beneficial effects, however, have yet to be clearly assessed in the presence of chemical stressors. We conducted a comparative evaluation of the toxicity of carbaryl in Eisenia fetida individuals subjected to a full diet (FD), DR and DD. For 14 days, groups of ten worms subjected to FD received 5 g oatmeal, those subjected to DR received 2.5 g oatmeal, and those subjected to DD received 0 g oatmeal we

Accelerating the humification mechanism of dissolved organic matter using biochar during vermicomposting of dewatered sludge.

The use of biochar can accelerate the vermicomposting process of dewatered sludge. However, the underlying mechanism of vermicompost maturity with biochar is still unclear. This study investigated the effect of biochar on sludge maturation during vermicomposting by analyzing the spectroscopic characteristics of dissolved organic matter. For this, dewatered sludge mixed with and without 5 % biochar were separately vermicomposted. The results showed that the biochar could significantly increase the biomass of earthworms as well as the activity and abundances of bacteria and eukaryotes (P < 0.05)

Exploring the impacts of microplastics and associated chemicals in the terrestrial environment - Exposure of soil invertebrates to tire particles.

Abrasion of tire wear is one of the largest sources of microplastics to the environment. Although most tire particles settle into soils, studies on their ecotoxicological impacts on the terrestrial environment are scarce. Here, the effects of tire particles (<180 μm) on three ecologically relevant soil invertebrate species, the enchytraeid worm Enchytraeus crypticus, the springtail Folsomia candida and the woodlouse Porcellio scaber, were studied. These species were exposed to tire particles spiked in soil or in food at concentrations of 0.02%, 0.06%, 0.17%, 0.5% and 1.5% (w/w). Tire particles
