Low-grade glioma is not a single diagnosis but a category of biologically diverse neoplasms. They are indolent, progressive, and, following anaplastic transformation, invariably fatal. Neuro-oncologists have not established a treatment standard for these tumors. However, it is clear that "low-grade" is not synonymous with "benign," and treatment is required sometime in the course of the disease. Previously, achieving a consensus had been limited by a lack of class I evidence. Physicians treated patients based on retrospective series and personal experience. Currently, results from prospective

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report the first case of combined oligodendroglioma and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A female college student and competitive cross-country runner presented to the Mayo Clinic at age 18 years with complaints of progressive headache and visual disturbances. Neuroimaging revealed a heavily calcified left parieto-occipital mass with focal enhancement and remodeling of the overlying calvarium.
INTERVENTION: A histological examination of the nearly gross total resection specimen disclosed a low-grade oligodendroglioma discretely abutting a sup…

INTRODUCTION: Oligodendrogliomas (ODGs) are IDH-mutated gliomas with 1p/19q co-deletion, typically associated with better outcomes than astrocytomas. Symptomatic leptomeningeal dissemination (LMD) is exceptionally rare, and predictors of its occurrence remain poorly defined. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the available literature on LMD in ODG and identify potential clinical, radiological, surgical, and histo-molecular risk markers.
METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase were systematically searched for studies reporting cases of ODG with LMD. Extracted data included demographics, tumor …

INTRODUCTION: Concurrent primary brain tumors are rare clinical entities, with a prevalence ranging from 0.1 to 0.5% of all diagnosed brain tumors. The co-occurrence of meningioma and oligodendroglioma is particularly uncommon, posing unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We describe the case of a patient diagnosed with concurrent meningioma and oligodendroglioma and review the existing literature on this rare phenomenon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female patient with a history of seizures presented to the emergency department with worsening headaches, nausea, and vomiting. She …

BACKGROUND: Oligodendrogliomas constitute 5% of all primary brain tumors and are the third most common cancer among intracranial tumors. More than 90% of oligodendrogliomas have supratentorial localization. Oligodendrogliomas arising in cerebellar peduncle are substantially rare, <1%. Up to now, 6 oligodendroglioma cases with cerebellar peduncle localization have been presented. We aimed to discuss our World Health Organization grade II oligodendroglioma case, which originated from cerebellar peduncle in the light of literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of 43-year-old woman. Her com…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pediatric oligodendroglioma (pODG) is a rare primary brain tumor that remains poorly understood. Demographics, outcomes, and prognostic factors were analyzed in 346 pODG cases from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.
METHODS: Gender, race, age, tumor location, tumor size, tumor grade, extent of resection, and use of radiotherapy were evaluated with respect to overall survival (OS) by univariate and multivariate analysis. These factors were assessed in the pediatric cohort and 5,753 adult oligodendroglioma cases for comparison.
RESULTS: The mean OS in pO…

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Spinal cord oligodendrogliomas are rare tumors, with a reported incidence varying between 0.8% and 4.7% of all spinal cord tumors and just over 50 cases reported in the literature. Of these, only 9 cases are histologically defined as anaplastic oligodendrogliomas, with few having complete molecular characterization. The diffuse tumor spread that can occur along the subarachnoid space with secondary invasion of the leptomeninges is called oligodendrogliomatosis and is associated with poor outcome.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man with a history of lumbar sten…

A 10-y-old castrated male German Wirehaired Pointer dog was presented for referral evaluation of a brain mass and craniotomy. Pertinent hist … ation of a squash preparation of the mass revealed a mildly inflamed and hemorrhagic neoplasm, with oligodendroglioma or an embryonal CNS neoplasm as primary differential diagnoses. Histopathology with immunohistochemistry confirmed a high-grade oligodendroglioma with embryonal morphology.

Congenital and perinatal primary brain neoplasms are extremely rare. Brainstem neoplasms in the perinatal and neonatal period are typically of high-grade nature and have poor prognoses with survival rates of less than 2 years from diagnosis. Herein, we report an unusual case of congenital anaplastic oligodendroglioma that arose in the pons and was detected as diffuse pontine glioma on in utero imaging studies during prenatal evaluation at 26 weeks' gestation. A male infant was delivered at 36.4 weeks of gestation via Cesarean section who developed progressive dyspnea shortly after birth. Magne…

BACKGROUND: To date, there is no report in the international literature of an oligodendroglioma of the ciliary body, nor is there an analysis of the possible origins of this lesion.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report on a 52-year-old man admitted to our hospital with a ciliary body tumor revealed by clinical examination and ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies. Following enucleation, pathological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. Postoperative histopathological staining results included OLIGO-2(+) and GFAP(-), leading to a pathological diagnosis…

BACKGROUND: Extraneural metastasis of oligodendroglioma is extremely rare and is diagnosed primarily by biopsy or autopsy and very occasionally by fine needle cytologic examination. We report a case of metastatic oligodendroglioma diagnosed by cytologic examination of a pleural effusion. Such a diagnosis has not been reported before.
CASE: A 64-year-old woman developed anemia and bilateral pleural effusion 7 years after an operation for an oligodendroglioma over the left frontal lobe. Cytologic examination of the pleural effusion showed aggregates of atypical polygonal cells containing round,…

PURPOSE: To retrospectively analyze the outcomes and benefits from radiation therapy (RT) as a component of multimodal treatment for oligodendroglioma and oligoastrocytoma, assessing local control and survival rates and evaluating prognostic factors.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively reviewed 56 adult patients with supratentorial oligodendroglioma or oligoastrocytoma treated at our institution from January 1990 to December 2003 with fractionated stereotactic RT (FSRT).
RESULTS: Fractionated stereotactic RT was well tolerated in all patients, without side effects. Median survival and …

We report a case of oligodendroglioma of the fourth ventricle complicated by disseminated intracranial and spinal oligodendrogliomatosis. This is further evidence that primary oligodendrogliomas arising in close proximity to the cerebrospinal pathway have a predilection for spontaneous dissemination. This condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hydrocephalus and myelopathy.

We present an unusual case of a patient with an intracranial low-grade oligodendroglioma who developed recurrence with an intramedullary spinal cord metastasis and multiple spinal leptomeningeal metastases. The intramedullary spinal cord metastasis showed mild enhancement similar to the original intracranial primary, while the multiple spinal leptomeningeal metastases revealed no enhancement. This is the seventh reported case of symptomatic intramedullary spinal cord metastasis from a low-grade oligodendroglioma.

Secondary leptomeningeal dissemination of oligodendroglioma is very rare. We report the case of a 38-year-old Caucasian male who presented with acute hydrocephalus. 8 months before, the patient had undergone craniotomy for right frontal anaplastic oligodendroglioma, WHO grade III. By that time, there was no evidence of tumor dissemination. MRI now ruled out local tumor progression but revealed meningeal contrast enhancement along the medulla, the myelon, and the cauda equina. Repeated lumbar puncture revealed increased cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) pressure and protein content. Malignant cells we…
