Marek's disease virus (MDV) and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are two major immunosuppressive oncogenic viruses that severely threaten the global poultry industry. Field co-infection of these two pathogens is prevalent, accompanied by highly similar pathological lesions, making conventional diagnostic technologies incapable of rapid on-site differential identification. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) coupled with the CRISPR/Cas12a system represents an innovative platform for rapid nucleic acid detection. In this study, target-specific crRNAs were designed against the conserved u

Approximately 12% of all cancers worldwide are associated with viral infections. To date, eight viruses have been shown to contribute to the development of human cancers, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Hepatitis B and C viruses, and Human papilloma virus, among others. These DNA and RNA viruses produce oncogenic effects through distinct mechanisms. First, viruses may induce sustained disorders of host cell growth and survival through the genes they express, or may induce DNA damage response in host cells, which in turn increases host genome instability. Second, they may induce chronic inf

Waterborne exposure to human viruses through contact with sewage-contaminated water environments can result in infections associated with a wide range of illnesses. Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most commonly encountered manifestations of waterborne viral illness. Respiratory diseases, neurological diseases and paralysis can also occur. Whether viral infections resulting in health outcomes like cancer might also be transmitted by the waterborne route is unknown. Recently, viruses belonging to two oncogenic groups-Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) and Human Polyomaviruses (HPyVs)-have been dete

BACKGROUND: HBV integration is considered as the main contributor to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, whether HBV integrated sequences determine genotype pathogenicity and how to block their function during HCC progression remains unclear.
METHODS: An in vitro HBV-infected PHH model and liver cancer cell lines were established to confirm the pathogenic potential of HBV-SITEs. The roles of HBV-SITE-1 in HCC development were analyzed using cellular phenotypic assays and molecular biology techniques, including the combined analysis of RNA-seq and ChIP-seq. Animal models were also used to

Naturally occurring oncolytic viruses are live, replication-proficient viruses that specifically infect human cancer cells while sparing normal cell counterparts. Since the eradication of smallpox in the 1970s with the aid of vaccinia viruses, the vaccinia viruses and other genera of poxviruses have shown various degrees of safety and efficacy in pre-clinical or clinical application for human anti-cancer therapeutics. Furthermore, we have recently discovered that cellular tumor suppressor genes are important in determining poxviral oncolytic tropism. Since carcinogenesis is a multi-step proces

Even though the paper entitled: The role of oncolytic virotherapy and viral oncogenes in the cancer stem cells: a review of virus in cancer stem cells" provides informative details regarding viral contribution in cancer biology, its classification of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) as oncoviruses is inaccurate.Current evidence demonstrates that while HSV and VZV may reactivate in immunocompromised cancer patients, there is no causative relationship between these two viruses and oncogenesis. It is necessary to make a distinction between cancer-inducing viruses and re

Whilst papillomaviruses mainly induce epithelial proliferations in man and in different animal species, the association of this group of viruses with malignant tumours has become increasingly evident. Despite the heterogeneity of human papillomavirus (HPV), only a small number are identified within carcinomas, implying a different, oncogenic potential for different HPV types.

With 13% of global tumorigenesis related to pathogens and 2.2 million new tumour cases related to viral infections every year, the role played by viruses in tumorigenesis cannot be ignored. At present, the viruses that have been identified as carcinogenic substances are EB virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, Kaposi's sarcoma virus, human immunodeficiency virus type 1, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, human papillomavirus, Merkel cell polyomavirus, and BK virus. There are also a number of viruses which have not been designated as carcinogens, but which are also closely related t

I always loved biology and to do experiments. This passion and a great deal of good fortune and serendipity landed me in the field of retrovirology at the time when it opened to experimental analysis. I became involved in viral replication, genetics, and viral oncogenes. In more recent years, I have applied what I learned in tumor virology to human cancer. The early years of my personal life were marked by displacements and migration: deportation into East Germany, escape to the West, and emigration to the United States. As a young man I faced heartbreaking personal tragedies but attained a pe

Oncogenic viruses can induce epigenetic changes in host cells, which may contribute to cell transformation and tumorigenesis by altering gene expression patterns. Human adenoviruses, while primarily known for their lytic infections, have also been implicated in oncogenic transformation in experimental settings, but the mechanisms underlying adenovirus oncoprotein-induced epigenetic dysregulation remain poorly defined. Building on our recent findings that the adenoviral oncoprotein E1B-55K coordinates cellular transformation through interactions with DNA-bound host transcription factors, we nex

The discovery of virus-specific messenger RNA in virus-induced animal tumors has led to the search for messenger RNA in human tumors that can be hybridized with the DNA of known oncogenic viruses. Attention has focused on the adenoviruses, which have produced cancer in laboratory animals and are widespread in man, and on three papovaviruses that have been isolated in human disease and which are oncogenic in hamsters. In other research, the association between human infection with herpesivurs type 2, which is likewise oncogenic in hamsters, and invasive carcinoma of the cervix is being examined

In 1964, Epstein, Barr, and Achong published a report outlining their discovery of viral particles in lymphoblasts isolated from a patient with Burkitt lymphoma. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was the first human cancer virus to be described, and its discovery paved the way for further investigations into the oncogenic potential of viruses. In the decades following the discovery of EBV, multinational research efforts led to the discovery of further viral causes of various human cancers. Lymphomas are perhaps the cancer type that is most closely associated with oncogenic viruses: infection with E

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There have been relatively few studies of HIV-related malignancies in Brazil. Universal access to antiretroviral drugs in Brazil has changed both the mortality and morbidity rates of AIDS. Nevertheless, there is also extreme poverty in both urban and rural areas and complications of prolonged immune suppression such as mycobacterial and malignant diseases have put a significant strain on the country's healthcare system. This brief review outlines the existing data regarding AIDS related malignancies in the largest Latin American country.
RECENT FINDINGS: Currently, there ar

Virus-associated cancers, which account for ~15-20% of the global cancer burden, arise from infections with human oncoviruses. These viruses drive malignant transformation through diverse mechanisms but share common oncogenic features, including reprogramming host membrane signaling and trafficking. Such processes are tightly regulated by phosphoinositides (PPIn), essential organizers of membrane dynamics and signal transduction implicated in cancer development and progression. Oncoviruses exploit host PPIn metabolism to facilitate their replication and persistence, often leading to its dysreg
