Clinical infectious diseases : an official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America2021eng
BACKGROUND: Identifying young individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are unaware of their status is a major challenge for HIV control in China. To address this, an innovative, anonymous vending machine-based urine self-collection for HIV testing (USCT) program was implemented in 2016 in colleges across China.
METHODS: From June 2016 to December 2019, 146 vending machines stocked with urine self-collection kits were distributed on 73 college campuses across 11 provinces of China. Urine samples were collected, delivered, and tested in an anonymous manner. We analyzed the

OBJECTIVES: Traditional knowledge dissemination methods have been ineffective in leading to timely and widespread changes in clinical practice. Social media have the potential to reach broader audiences than more traditional methods that disseminate research findings. We evaluated the effectiveness of using social media to mobilize knowledge about pain in dementia.
METHODS: We developed an online repository of evidence-based content (e.g., guidelines, assessment approaches) and a video about pain in dementia. The video was uploaded to YouTube, a video-sharing platform. We collaborated with st

INTRODUCTION: Online communities contain a wealth of information containing unsolicited patient experiences that may go beyond what is captured by guided surveys or patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments used in clinical settings. This study described patient experiences reported online to better understand the day-to-day disease burden of ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
METHODS: Unguided, English-language patient narratives reported between January 2010 and May 2016 were collected from 52 online sources (e.g., general/health social networking sites, patient-physician Q&A sites, AS forums).

Infectious disease epidemics occur within dynamic systems and environments that shape risk and, ultimately, the spread of infectious diseases. Gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately impacted by HIV everywhere in the world. Several emerging trends present risks for sustained or increased HIV acquisition and transmission, and the growth of global travel in the context of emerging online platforms for social/sexual networking is discussed here. Four factors associated with travel that could potentiate HIV transmission are highlighted: different patterns of sexual

BACKGROUND: Despite the numerous benefits of social media, it has transformed into a platform where adolescents and young adults encounter instances of sexual violence perpetrated by assailants.
OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of our study was to explore the sociodemographic profiles and risk determinants associated with sexual violence among individuals who fell victim to or engaged in sexual assault and harassment facilitated by social media platforms.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the records of 71 individuals who were victims of sexual violence related to social media and

During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns and isolation have limited the availability of face-to-face support services for victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Despite the growing need for online help in supporting IPV victims, far less is known about the underlying mechanisms between IPV and online help-seeking. We studied the mediating role of emotion dysregulation (ED) and the moderating role of perceived anonymity (PA) on the internet to explain IPV victims' willingness of online help-seeking (WOHS). Through a PROCESS analysis of the questionnaire data (n = 510, 318 female, 192 male,

In Japan, people who indulge in animation, comics, and games are commonly referred to as "otaku." Despite the prevalent stereotype associating otaku with socially maladaptive characteristics, empirical studies on this topic are limited. Previous studies suggest two consistent aspects of otaku: a tendency towards pessimism and excessive internet use. Moreover, research suggests that addictive internet use is associated with pessimistic cognition. For this reason, this study examined the distinguishing characteristics of internet dependence among Japanese otaku. Assuming various content within "

BACKGROUND: Problematic social networking site use (PSNSU) may arise as a coping response to generalized anxiety and, in turn, intensify anxiety symptoms, creating a bidirectional cycle that poses increased risks for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents. However, the symptom-level mechanisms underlying these intertwined associations remain unclear. To address this gap, the present study applied a symptom network analysis approach to examine.
METHODS: A total of 5,938 adolescents in Guangxi Province, China, completed an e-questionnaire and validated measures of generalized anxiety

PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness of a home-based social media use intervention to enhance the social networks of rural youth with disabilities.
METHOD: Participants were nine youth (mean age = 17.0 years) with disabilities from two rural Australian communities. The intervention consisted of providing appropriate assistive technology and social media training on individualised goals. Using mixed methods, quantitative (a single group pre-post) and qualitative (interviews with participants and their carers) measures were used to examine outcomes of training, individual experiences of th

BACKGROUND: Mental ill-health is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Moreover, 75% of mental health conditions emerge between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources and limited engagement with services, a majority of young people affected by mental ill-health do not access evidence-based support. To address this gap, our team has developed a multimodal, scalable digital mental health service (Enhanced Moderated Online Social Therapy [MOST+]) merging real-time, clinician-delivered web chat counseling; interactive user-directed online therapy; expert and peer

Social media (SM) refers to social networking sites (SNSs), which are defined as online services that enable individuals to build a public or semi-public profile and give them the opportunity to create a network of contacts and interact. SM affects all aspects of life and may offer new opportunities to explore new experiences and perspectives of life because of its feasibility. But several times, because of feasibility, misinformation is generated intentionally or unintentionally, which spreads rapidly, and such misinformation can affect all aspects of life. However, health-related misinformat

BACKGROUND: Effective learning strategies are essential for inclusive elementary classrooms, particularly in Indonesian language education, where students have diverse learning needs and digital access levels. Although social media has become a common educational tool, its structured use as a pedagogical model for inclusive learning in Indonesian schools is limited. Previous studies have largely focused on general online learning, leaving a gap in understanding how social media can foster inclusion and language skill development. This study addresses that gap by exploring how social media can

BACKGROUND: Online peer support networks are a growing area of mental health support for offering social connection, identity, and support. However, it has been reported that not all individuals have a positive experience on such networks. The potential for adverse events within a moderated online peer support network is a new area of research exploration.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine if use of an online moderated peer networks leads to adverse events for users.
METHODS: Four biannual online surveys (October 2014 to March 2016) were conducted by a large national UK

INTRODUCTION: Since its diffusion in the 1990s, the Internet has developed into a fully integrated component of the lives of teenagers across the globe. As use of the Internet by underage youth has evolved and increased over the past decades, concerns about how technology may contribute to minors becoming victims of online sex crimes, including online grooming, have heightened. The present literature review contributes to the existing knowledge base regarding the epidemiology of the online grooming process, exploring key themes and issues arising in this area.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic internet use (PIU; otherwise known as Internet Addiction) is a growing problem in modern societies. There is scarce knowledge of the demographic variables and specific internet activities associated with PIU and a limited understanding of how PIU should be conceptualized. Our aim was to identify specific internet activities associated with PIU and explore the moderating role of age and gender in those associations.
METHODS: We recruited 1749 participants aged 18 and above via media advertisements in an Internet-based survey at two sites, one in the US, and one

Men who have sex with men (MSM) who use websites and smartphone applications to meet sexual partners ("hookup sites") may be at increased HIV risk. Many sites provide profile options to disclose HIV status and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. Little is known about the acceptability of disclosure options which may guide sexual decision-making. We evaluated 104 MSM presenting to a publicly-funded STD clinic. Most (86%) had met a partner online in the last 12 months; 55 and 27% reported using the HIV and PrEP disclosure options, respectively. White MSM were less likely to disclose HIV status

This exploratory study is the first to identify content differences between youths' online chats with contact child sex offenders (CCSOs; seek to meet with youths) and those with fantasy child sex offenders (FCSOs; do not meet with youths) using statistical discourse analysis (SDA). Past studies suggest that CCSOs share their experiences and emotions with targeted youths (self-disclosure grooming tactic) and encourage them to reciprocate, to build trust and closer relationships through a cycle of self-disclosures. In this study, we examined 36,029 words in 4,353 messages within 107 anonymized

PURPOSE: Understanding how social media use (SMU) embedded in daily routines influences mental health in older adulthood is crucial. We explored whether integration-based SMU relates to depressive symptoms and whether social support mediates that link, considering online network size.
METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 371 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years measured SMU integration, social support, depressive symptoms, demographics, health, and network size. Mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping assessed direct and indirect paths.
RESULTS: Greater SMU integration corres
