BACKGROUND: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare but sight-threatening uveitis, and most observations have been made after typical manifestations occur. This report focuses on the choroidal changes detected by multimodal imaging at the presymptomatic stage of SO, which is implicated in the early recognition of SO.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman suffered from decreased vision in the right eye and was diagnosed with retinal capillary hemangioblastomas associated with Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. The patient underwent two 23-G pars plana vitrectomies (PPVs), soon after which typical sign

A retrospective clinicopathologic review of 105 cases of sympathetic ophthalmia showed histologic features of prognostic significance and evaluated the role of therapy. Classic descriptions omit retinal changes, but 58.0% of our cases had retinal detachment and 42.2% showed intraretinal inflammation. The optic nerve and/or meninges were inflamed in 51%. Optic atrophy was seen in 54.4%. Plasma cells are said to be characteristically absent, but 65.0% of steroid-treated and 85.7% of cases before the steroid era showed plasma cell infiltration. Severity of inflammation pathologically correlated w

AIM: To evaluate options of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) compared with literature data. Backgroud: SO is an ocular autoimmune disease. It is characterized by disbalance in the imunoregulatory T-subsets within cell mediated immune response.
METHODS: File examination of SO by evaluation humoral and cellular immunity was ranked nukleolar test (NT). It evaulates the current status of lymphocyte activation based on the nucleolar morphology and RNA transcription aktivity. The classical histological examination was supported by immunohistochemical analysis of

INTRODUCTION: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare but serious inflammatory ocular disorder. We report a case of endogenous fungal endophthalmitis caused by Aspergillus flavus infection, which resulted in SO in the contralateral eye after two vitrectomy procedures.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old man presented to our hospital with a 2-week history of redness and blurred vision in his right eye. Three months earlier, he had undergone two vitrectomy procedures for fungal endophthalmitis in his left eye, with culture results positive for Aspergillus flavus. Upon admission, antifungal therapy was adm

TOPIC: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a sight-threatening granulomatous panuveitis caused by a sensitizing event. Primary enucleation or primary evisceration, versus primary repair, as a risk management strategy after open-globe injury (OGI) remains controversial.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This systematic review was conducted to report the incidence of SO after primary repair compared with that of after primary enucleation or primary evisceration. This enabled the reporting of an estimated number needed to treat.
METHODS: Five journal databases were searched. This review was registered with Intern

We herein presented a case of sympathetic ophthalmia induced by chemical burns. A 39-year-old male was referred to our retinal clinic complaining of sharply decreased vision in his right eye, with photophobia and headache. He had suffered severe chemical burns five months ago, and his left eye underwent amniotic membrane transplantation combined with tarsorrhaphy for persistent corneal ulceration. A comprehensive examination was performed. After excluding other infectious ocular diseases and systemic inflammatory disease, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada was considered. A regimen of 1.5 mg/kg prednisone p

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of bilateral progressive subretinal fibrosis and blindness with multifocal granulomatous chorioretinitis occurring after intraocular surgery. We propose that this is a variant of sympathetic ophthalmia.
DESIGN: Clinicopathologic case report.
METHODS: The left enucleated globe was examined by histopathologic methods. The patient's sera were subjected to immunohistochemical studies against retinal antigens, and collagen 2 types in areas of fibrosis were identified. Polymerase chain reaction was used to test for herpes virus DNA in microdissected, formalin-fixed, par

Iron has been implicated in the pathogenesis of age-related retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Previous work showed that intravitreal (IVT) injection of iron induces acute photoreceptor death, lipid peroxidation, and autofluorescence (AF). Herein, we extend this work, finding surprising chronic features of the model: geographic atrophy and sympathetic ophthalmia. We provide new mechanistic insights derived from focal AF in the photoreceptors, quantification of bisretinoids, and localization of carboxyethyl pyrrole, an oxidized adduct of docosahexaenoic acid ass

This case report presents a rare instance of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) in a patient who developed globe rupture due to blunt ocular trauma. It provides insights into the clinical course and three-year follow-up of successful treatment achieved through systemic immunosuppressive therapy. A 45-year-old male patient sustained blunt trauma to his left eye. Due to clinical signs indicative of rupture, conjunctival exploration was performed, revealing a scleral rupture that was primarily repaired. On postoperative day 18, the patient developed bilateral panuveitis consistent with trauma-induced SO

We experienced a case of sympathetic ophthalmia in a fellow eye after vitrectomy for subretinal hemorrhage related to polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. A 60-year-old male consulted us for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy with subretinal hemorrhage in his left eye. The recurrence of massive subretinal hemorrhage refractory to repeated pars plana vitrectomies leads to phthisis bulbi. Two months later, multiple serous retinal detachments were observed in his right eye. Positive human leukocyte antigen-DR4 and the uveitis were helpful in distinguishing between sympathetic ophthalmia and age-rela
