Dissection, light and electron microscopy combined with degeneration induced by intracranial nerve lesions and superficial nerve transection were used to trace the sources of sensory fibres of the inferior conjunctiva of cynomolgus monkeys. Most nerves destined for the inferior conjunctiva were branches of the lacrimal nerve and entered the inferior eyelid laterally. Following unilateral ophthalmic neurotomy in three monkeys and combined ophthalmic/maxillary neurotomy in one monkey, substantial and regular degenerative changes were observed in the nerves and nerve-fibre bundles of the inferior

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic involvement in acute leukemia is common, with 36% of patients having ophthalmic involvement at the time of diagnosis. However, neuro-ophthalmic involvement is relatively rare. We present a characterization of neuro-ophthalmic findings in patients with acute leukemia and discuss the implications of these findings on patient management and prognosis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of cases of acute leukemia with central nervous system (CNS) involvement and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations that were evaluated at the Wilmer Eye Institute between January 2013 an

PURPOSE: To determine pathways of sympathetic nerves from the orbital apex to the eyelids in human cadaver tissue using immunohistochemistry.
METHODS: Human cadaver orbit tissue was sectioned and immunolabeled with a monoclonal antityrosine hydroxylase antibody.
RESULTS: In the orbital apex, the nasociliary, frontal, lacrimal, and maxillary branches of the trigeminal nerve demonstrated intense staining upon entering the orbit. Immunoreactive axons from the nasociliary and frontal nerves were observed to join the extraocular motor nerves in the posterior orbit. A plexus of immunolabeled nerve

Most LHRH neurons actively migrate from the olfactory epithelium to the forebrain during embryonic days (ED) 3.5-8. When a small piece of the membrane filter was placed on the central course of the olfactory nerve in ED 3.5-5 chick embryos, LHRH neurons deviated from their regular migratory course at ED 6.5-7.5 to follow a route along the PSA-NCAM-positive medial and lateral nasal branches of the ophthalmic nerve of the trigeminal nerve. The olfactory nerve fibers which were specifically immunoreactive for somatostatin also deviated into the ophthalmic nerve. Enzymatic removal of PSA using end

A case of the left ophthalmic artery arising from the frontal branch of the middle meningeal artery was found in the cadaver of a 65 year-old Japanese man who died of senility. The original ophthalmic artery, much smaller than normal, arose from the internal carotid artery and communicated with a branch of the anomalous ophthalmic artery under the optic nerve. From this communicating branch, the central artery of the retina originated. The right ophthalmic artery was also anomalous. Though normal in origin and ramification, it passed under the optic nerve to reach the medial wall of the orbit.

Very many variations of facial grading systems have been developed, but none address the ophthalmic complications of facial nerve weakness adequately. The important priorities for ophthalmic surgeon are protecting the ocular surface, maintaining sight and peripheral vision, as well as improving the cosmesis of periocular area. The absence of a universally agreed grading system on the ophthalmic plastic complications of facial nerve paralysis is an obstacle to standardised treatment. It is time for clinicians to recognise this need.

Postherpetic ophthalmic neuralgia is the final stage of a varicella zoster infection. Many years after chickenpox infection, patients can develop herpes zoster in one or more specific dermatomal regions. The ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve and the thoracic nerves are most commonly affected. Younger patients are less prone to postherpetic neuralgia than the older. Patients with a depression in cell-mediated immunity are more susceptible to develop postherpetic pain. Postherpetic ophthalmic neuralgia is a neuropathic pain and can be treated by anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressa

Neuro-sarcoidosis has important ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. Sarcoidosis most commonly affects the uveal tract (iris, ciliary body, and choroid) however the optic nerve is commonly involved. Sarcoid related optic neuritis is an important differential diagnosis in optic neuritis especially in atypical presentations. The use of multimodal imaging techniques available in the ophthalmic setting can enable the detection of choroidal or optic nerve granulomas and aid the diagnosis. Efferent manifestations of neuro-sarcoidosis are broad and can range from isolated cranial neuropath

A 16-year old Warmblood gelding presented with a nonhealing corneal ulcer and absent corneal sensation in the left eye. A lesion affecting the maxillary and ophthalmic branches of the left trigeminal nerve was suspected. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging identified marked thickening of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the left trigeminal nerve. The nerve was iso- to hypointense on T1-weighted and T2-weighted images with heterogeneous enhancement. A peripheral nerve sheath tumor was suspected, however granulomatous neuritis was histopathologically confirmed. These inflammatory changes can

PURPOSE: This study describes the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) anatomy of the blood vessels and nerves of the orbit to provide a morphological basis for the interpretation of clinical findings.
METHODS: Seven volunteers aged 29 to 54 years underwent high-resolution MRI of the orbit on a 1 Tesla unit (Impact, Siemens, Germany). T1-weighted oblique-sagittal, coronal, and axial images were obtained using a surface coil. Anatomic structures on the magnetic resonance images were identified by comparison with corresponding histologic sections of the orbit.
RESULTS: The ophthalmic artery and mo

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive medical imaging technology that is playing an increasing role in the routine assessment and management of patients with neuro-ophthalmic conditions. Its ability to characterise the optic nerve head, peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and cellular layers of the macula including the ganglion cell layer enables qualitative and quantitative assessment of optic nerve disease. In this review, we discuss technical features of OCT and OCT-based imaging techniques in the neuro-ophthalmic context, potential pitfalls to be aware of, and specific a

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful, long-lasting condition as a consequence of nerve damage resulting from a herpes zoster infection. Although there are many different treatments available to reduce pain duration and severity, PHN is often refractory to them and no single therapy shows an effective cure for all cases of PHN, especially for those involving the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a minimally invasive procedure for pain treatment that has been practiced over the past decade. However, its clinical efficacy and safety for treating PHN in
