Ultraviolet radiation-induced skin lesions in laboratory opossums (Monodelphis domestica) exposed from the weanling stage.

After repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation, adult laboratory opossums (Monodelphis domestica) may develop hyperplasia and neoplasia of the shaved skin. We exposed opossums from the weanling stage (8-10 weeks after birth) and compared the incidence of lesions at designated time points with those observed following introduction of adults (around 5 months old) to the same irradiation protocol (125 J/m2 of UVB three times each week for up to 40 weeks). The overall incidence of hyperplasia and neoplasia among opossums exposed from the weanling stage was markedly lower than among animals first

Life cycle and development of Lagochilascaris sprenti (Nematoda: ascarididae) from opossums (Marsupialia: didelphidae) in Louisiana.

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris sprenti, a species which occurs in the stomach of opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in Louisiana, was determined. The larva in the egg developed to the infective stage after eggs from the feces of infected animals were in culture about 30 days. When eggs containing infective larvae were fed to mice, the larvae hatched, penetrated the intestinal mucosa, migrated through the liver and lungs, and eventually reached the skeletal muscles where they became encapsulated. Larvae were also found encapsulated in the skeletal muscles of rats, gerbils, hamsters, monkeys, an

Marsupial morphology of reproduction: South America opossum male model.

This study aims to describe the morphology of Didelphis sp. male genital organs (penis, testes, epididymis, ductus deferens, prostate, and bulbourethral gland). Ten male animals were used, eight for macroscopic and light microscopy analysis, and two for scanning electron microscopy. The testes and epididymis showed similarity to other eutherian mammals. The bifid penis showed the urethra ending in the medial region where the bifurcation begins, occurring in each segment extension of the urethral groove until the beginning of the glans. Histologically, the penis consists of a cavernous and spon

Effect of protamine on the accumulation of gentamicin in opossum kidney epithelial cells.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not protamine, an arginine-rich basic protein mixture, inhibits the accumulation of gentamicin, a nephrotoxic drug, in cultured opossum kidney (OK) epithelial cells. METHODS: The effect of protamine from salmon on accumulation and binding of [(3) H]gentamicin was investigated in OK cells. KEY FINDINGS: Protamine inhibited the binding and accumulation of [(3) H]gentamicin in a concentration-dependent manner. The accumulation of [(14) C]inulin, a marker of fluid-phase endocytosis, was not affected by protamine at concentrations up

Ileo-cecal junction: a valve or a sphincter? An experimental study in the opossum.

The characteristics of the ileo-junction (UIC) were examined in seven opossums in vivo, and the effect of the UIC on colo-ileal reflux in eight opossums in vitro. Electromyography and intraluminal manometry were studied during intestinal distensions, and administration of phenylephrine, isoproterenol and carbachol. In vitro studies used preparations of ileum, UIC, and colon, attached to a propulsion evaluation system. Fluid flow across the UIC was studied basally and after phenylephrine, isoproterenol and carbachol. A high pressure zone in the UIC was not observed in vivo. Colonic distension i

Lung lesions in an opossum (Didelphis virginiana) associated with Capillaria didelphis.

An opossum (Didelphis virginiana) live-trapped on Parramore Island, Virginia was infected with the lung parasite Capillaria didelphis. Lung lesions associated with this parasite were extensive and consisted of numerous areas with central necrosis deep within the parenchyma. Necrotic foci were present around airways and consisted of a mixture of inflammatory cells and cellular debris, adult nematodes and many bipolar eggs. This parasite causes severe verminous pneumonia in the opossum.

Cholecystokinin-induced contraction of opossum sphincter of Oddi. Mechanism of action.

In this study, we evaluated the mechanism of action whereby cholecystokinin increases spike-burst rate of the opossum sphincter of Oddi (SO). Each spike burst corresponds to a peristaltic SO contraction. Two types of animal preparations were evaluated: (1) awake chronic animal preparations and (2) anesthetized animals. A total of 19 chronic animals were prepared by implantation of electrodes on the SO, gastric antrum, duodenum, and jejunum. SO spike-burst rate was stimulated by intravenous infusion of CCK-OP (10 ng/kg/min), feeding, or intraduodenal infusion of fat-containing nutrient. Each st

Dopamine stimulation of cAMP production in cultured opossum kidney cells.

Dopamine receptors have been identified in many tissues including the kidney. To establish an in vitro system as a model for dopamine action, we studied the effect of dopamine (DA) receptor agonists and antagonists on adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) formation in opossum kidney (OK) cells. The stimulation of cAMP production in these cells by dopamine was dose dependent, and markedly higher levels were observed in the presence of dopamine plus a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine. Half-maximal stimulation was found with 1.15 +/- 0.22 microM dopamine. A DA1-recep

The cardiac, oxyntic and pyloric glands in the developing opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

In the opossum the fundic area of the gastric mucosa develops first, and oxyntic glands show early division into gastric pits and glandular components which then grow simultaneously. At 40 d postnatum the oxyntic glands are longer than the gastric pits but in the pyloric glands the pits still are longer than the glands and it is not until the 73rd postnatal day, that pyloric glands are longer than their pits. Development of the cardiac glands is delayed even more and the length of the gland does not surpass that of the pit until about 95 d postnatum. Argyrophil cells are concentrated in the ca

Catecholamines release mediators in the opossum oesophageal circular smooth muscle.

1. Effects of catecholamines applied exogenously to the circular smooth muscle layer of the body of the oesophagus of the opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) were studied, simultaneously measuring changes in the membrane potential, the membrane conductance and the contractility of the muscle, using the double sucrose-gap technique. 2. Superfusion of the smooth muscle with Krebs solution at 27 degrees C containing dopamine (10(-6)-10(-4) M) dose-dependently caused a hyperpolarization of the smooth muscle cells and an increased membrane resistance followed after gradual repolarization by oscillation

Control mechanism of spontaneous in vitro contractions of the opossum sphincter of Oddi.

We evaluated the control mechanism of peristaltic contractions in the opossum sphincter of Oddi (SO) by means of an in vitro preparation. At each of four sites spaced uniformly along the sphincter segment, a force transducer recorded contractions while a monopolar electrode recorded myoelectric activity. Spontaneous myoelectric and contractile activity occurred in 15 of the 20 intact SO specimens studied. Electrical recordings showed characteristic control waves and response activity. Each control wave was invariably accompanied by a phasic contraction, irrespective of whether or not response

Variability of lower esophageal sphincter pressure in the fasted unanesthetized opossum.

The opossum has served as a useful animal model for in vivo studies of lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function. Previous investigations, however, have been confined to studies on anesthetized animals. In 10 opossums we investigated LES pressure during fasting cycles of the gastrointestinal migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) and examined the influences of anesthesia and feeding on LES pressure. Intraluminal pressure from the esophageal body, LES, and gastric antrum was recorded by a manometric assembly that incorporated a sleeve device. Myoelectric activity was recorded from the gastric antr

Effect of alcohol on cyclical myoelectric activity of the opossum sphincter of Oddi.

Ethyl alcohol may adversely affect pancreatic function by perturbing sphincter of Oddi (SO) or duodenal motor activity. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of ingested alcohol on the SO, duodenal, and gastric myoelectric activity in conscious opossums. In five adult opossums bipolar stranded stainless-steel wire electrodes were implanted on the SO, gastric antrum, and duodenum. After a 2-week recovery period, each animal underwent eight 8-hr recording sessions while fasted and awake. After two fasting cycles of the migrating myoelectric complex, animals were randomly fed either 10

Prostaglandins and tetrodotoxin-insensitive relaxation of opossum lower esophageal sphincter.

Field stimulation with pulses of 0.5 or 5 ms relaxed isolated strips of lower esophageal sphincter (LES) of the opossum; only responses to 0.5-ms pulses were inhibited by tetrodotoxin. Black widow spider venom prevented relaxation to both stimuli; thus both stimuli may release nonadrenergic inhibitory mediator. Isoproterenol, but not PGEs or ATP, was a consistent relaxant of LES. PGF2alpha (approximately 1 microgram/ml) and stable endoperoxides (approximately 10 ng/ml) stimulated LES muscle. Comparison of 6 Injectable Anesthetic Regimens and Isoflurane in Gray Short-tailed Opossums (Monodelphis domestica).

Gray short-tailed opossums are used in a wide variety of research in the areas of developmental biology, oncology, immunology, and comparative biology. Despite many frequent experimental manipulations of these animals under anesthesia, few studies to date have characterized the effects of anesthesia in this species. Our aim was to identify safe and effective injectable anesthetic combinations using ketamine and xylazine or ketamine and dexmedetomidine at doses of 40 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg for ketamine, 5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg for xylazine, and 0.05 mg/kg to 0.1 mg/kg for dexmedetomidine. A retrospective study of 11 cases of lungworm (Didelphostrongylus hayesi) infection in opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

A juvenile, female North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) died of verminous pneumonia caused by Didelphostrongylus haysei despite aggressive treatment with oral fenbendazole, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. This prompted a retrospective study of lungworm infection in opossums, during which 19 additional necropsy reports from opossums were reviewed. Including the subject of this report, a total of 11 (55%) of these cases included a diagnosis of lungworm infection. This diagnosis was considered to have contributed to death in eight out of the 11 cases (73%). Histologically, 10 of the 11

Typhus and typhuslike rickettsiae associated with opossums and their fleas in Los Angeles County, California.

The recent discovery of cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) infected with a typhuslike rickettsia (designated the ELB agent) raises the question of whether similar rickettsial infections exist in wild cat flea populations. We verified the presence of the ELB agent and Rickettsia typhi in urban and suburban areas of Los Angeles, Calif. Opossums trapped in close proximity to the residences of human murine typhus cases in Los Angeles county and other areas within the city of Los Angeles were tested for the presence of typhus group rickettsiae by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Helminths and protozoan parasites in common opossums (Didelphis marsupialis) in a suburban area in Medellín, Colombia.

Didelphis marsupialis is a marsupial species that effectively adapts to synanthropic processes developing in cities. This marsupial lives closely with domestic animals and humans, which has favored the active exchange of parasites, thus increasing polyparasitism. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of helminths and protozoans infecting D. marsupialis in the Corregimiento of Santa Elena, Medellín. Twenty-three individuals were captured and classified as male, female, adult, or juvenile. The fecal samples were analyzed using various coprodiagnostic techniques. The eggs and oocyst

Revisiting the Role of Opossums (Marsupialia) as Sentinel for Brazilian Spotted Fever Caused by Rickettsia rickettsii.

In southeastern Brazil, Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), is mainly transmitted to humans by Amblyomma sculptum ticks, whose populations are chiefly sustained by capybaras, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. As capybaras are sentinel hosts for BSF, serological analysis of capybaras is the most feasible way to determine whether an A. sculptum population is infected with R. rickettsii or not. Because the immature stages of A. sculptum commonly feed on opossums (Didelphis spp.), which are susceptible to R. rickettsii infection, this study aimed to validate the use of opos
