Topography of optic flow processing in olivo-cerebellar pathways in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

In birds, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM) are brainstem nuclei involved in the analysis of optic flow. A major projection site of both nBOR and LM is the medial column of the inferior olive (IO), which provides climbing fibers to the vestibulocerebellum. This pathway has been well documented in pigeons, but not other birds. Recent works have highlighted that zebra finches show specializations with respect to optic flow processing, which may be reflected in the organization of optic flow pathways to the IO. In this study, we characterized

Two patients of visual disturbance and optic perineuritis after placement of a flow diverter.

The pathogenesis of new visual symptoms after flow diverter stent placement in the ophthalmic artery for internal carotid artery aneurysms remains unclear. We report two cases of patients who developed visual field disturbance and decreased visual acuity following flow diverter placement. The "doughnut sign" was found around the optic nerve on magnetic resonance imaging. The patients had progressive visual field defects and impairment on the side where the flow diverter was placed. Short tau inversion recovery coronal images showed a doughnut-shaped high-signal around the optic nerve on the af

Self-initiation Inhibits the Postural and Electrophysiological Responses to Optic Flow and Button Pressing.

As we move through our environment, our visual system is presented with optic flow, a potentially important cue for perception, navigation and postural control. How does the brain anticipate the optic flow that arises as a consequence of our own movement? Converging evidence suggests that stimuli are processed differently by the brain if occurring as a consequence of self-initiated actions, compared to when externally generated. However, this has mainly been demonstrated with auditory stimuli. It is not clear how this occurs with optic flow. We measured behavioural, neurophysiological and head

Bayesian modeling of perceived surface slant from actively-generated and passively-observed optic flow.

We measured perceived depth from the optic flow (a) when showing a stationary physical or virtual object to observers who moved their head at a normal or slower speed, and (b) when simulating the same optic flow on a computer and presenting it to stationary observers. Our results show that perceived surface slant is systematically distorted, for both the active and the passive viewing of physical or virtual surfaces. These distortions are modulated by head translation speed, with perceived slant increasing directly with the local velocity gradient of the optic flow. This empirical result allow

Blood flow disturbances in the central retinal artery in patients with traumatic optic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a serious sequel of head trauma, leading even to loss of vision. Experimental studies suggest that vascular factors contribute to the pathogenesis of TON. Thus the purpose of this study was to explore associations between blood flow Doppler parameters in the central retinal artery (CRA) and optic nerve function in patients after closed head trauma. MATERIAL/METHODS: Blood flow was evaluated by color-coded duplex sonography (CCDS) in the CRA of 72 consecutive patients (57 males and 15 females, mean age: 40+/-14.5, range: 15-77 years) with a diagn

Morphometric Assessment for Functional Evaluation of Coronary Stenosis with Optical Coherence Tomography and the Optical Flow Ratio in a Vessel with Single Stenosis.

Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in identifying functionally significant coronary stenosis in a vessel with single stenosis. Background: The OCT-based morphofunctional computational method for deriving the optical flow ratio (OFR) has diagnostic value, as it can identify the functional severity of coronary stenosis, but the ability of the OFR to aid the OCT in determining coronary stenosis hemodynamics in single-stenosis lesion remains unclear. Methods: 74 vessels with single stenosis were studied in 69 patients; all cases

Assessment of choriocapillary flow deficits in myopic children by optical coherence tomography angiography.

To assess macular and optic disc choriocapillary flow deficit (CCFD) and vessel density (VD) in myopic children by OCT-angiography. 280 eyes of 280 subjects were included and divided into the non-myopia (n = 96), low myopia (n = 95), and moderate myopia (n = 89) groups. We analyzed the following factors: CCFD density and size, choroidal vascularity index, choriocapillary VD, retinal VD. The moderate myopia group showed significantly higher CCFD density and size (p < 0.05). There were significant linear correlations between CCFD density and axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE), average

Time-Resolved Dynamic Optical Coherence Tomography for Retinal Blood Flow Analysis.

PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) representations in clinical practice are static and do not allow for a dynamic visualization and quantification of blood flow. This study aims to present a method to analyze retinal blood flow dynamics using time-resolved structural OCT. METHODS: We developed novel imaging protocols to acquire video-rate time-resolved OCT B-scans (1024 × 496 pixels, 10 degrees field of view) at four different sensor integration times (integration time of 44.8 µs at a nominal A-scan rate of 20 kHz, 22.4 µs at 40 kHz, 11.2 µs at 85 kHz, and 7.24 µs at 125 kHz). Pig Movement Estimation by Integrating Optical Flow with a Multi-Object Tracking Model.

Pig husbandry constitutes a significant segment within the broader framework of livestock farming, with porcine well-being emerging as a paramount concern due to its direct implications on pig breeding and production. An easily observable proxy for assessing the health of pigs lies in their daily patterns of movement. The daily movement patterns of pigs can be used as an indicator of their health, in which more active pigs are usually healthier than those who are not active, providing farmers with knowledge of identifying pigs' health state before they become sick or their condition becomes li

A new variational technique for combining affine registration and optical flow in echocardiography images.

Since myocardial motion is directly related to cardiac vascular supply, it can be helpful in diagnosing the heart abnormalities. The most comprehensive and available imaging study of the cardiac function is B-Mode echocardiography. However diagnostic systems are expert dependent and motion is not clear in the B-mode echocardiography images and therefore many efforts are pointed toward proposing new methods to measure the motion accurately. So far there have been many methods for myocardial motion estimation such as affine registration, elastic registration or optical flow but each method suffe

An instance-aware segmentation and optical flow based DVI-SLAM for dynamic environments.

Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) is a fundamental building block for markerless Augmented Reality systems. However, most conventional SLAM systems exhibit poor performance in real-time environments because of the influence of dynamic objects in unstructured surroundings. We are proposing a new Dynamic Visual Inertial SLAM system called DVI-SLAM to address the challenges of dynamic content presented in complex urban scenes. Leveraging instance-aware segmentation and optical flow methods, our system can detect and exclude actively moving objects from the tracking process. In addition

Debris Flow Detection System Based on Tree-Topology Optical Fiber Network.

This report proposes a debris flow detection system based on an optical fiber network. Optical communication devices, including a distributed feedback laser, fiber amplifier, and amplified photodetector are used in the detection system. A tree topology fiber network formed by multiple optical couplers and delay fibers is employed to increase the number of sensor lines in the sensing port. Fiber patch cables or fiber mirrors are used as sensor heads instead of electric cables. The time-division multiplexing technique is used to simultaneously monitor all sensors in the time domain. It is demons

Modeling the influence of optic flow on grid cell firing in the absence of other cues1.

Information from the vestibular, sensorimotor, or visual systems can affect the firing of grid cells recorded in entorhinal cortex of rats. Optic flow provides information about the rat's linear and rotational velocity and, thus, could influence the firing pattern of grid cells. To investigate this possible link, we model parts of the rat's visual system and analyze their capability in estimating linear and rotational velocity. In our model a rat is simulated to move along trajectories recorded from rat's foraging on a circular ground platform. Thus, we preserve the intrinsic statistics of rea

Spatial attention is attracted in a sustained fashion toward singular points in the optic flow.

While a single approaching object is known to attract spatial attention, it is unknown how attention is directed when the background looms towards the observer as s/he moves forward in a quasi-stationary environment. In Experiment 1, we used a cued speeded discrimination task to quantify where and how spatial attention is directed towards the target superimposed onto a cloud of moving dots. We found that when the motion was expansive, attention was attracted towards the singular point of the optic flow (the focus of expansion, FOE) in a sustained fashion. The effects were less pronounced when

Noninvasive optical characterization of muscle blood flow, oxygenation, and metabolism in women with fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Women with fibromyalgia (FM) have symptoms of increased muscular fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance, which may be associated with alterations in muscle microcirculation and oxygen metabolism. This study used near-infrared diffuse optical spectroscopies to noninvasively evaluate muscle blood flow, blood oxygenation and oxygen metabolism during leg fatiguing exercise and during arm arterial cuff occlusion in post-menopausal women with and without FM. METHODS: Fourteen women with FM and twenty-three well-matched healthy controls participated in this study. For the fatiguing exe

A biologically inspired neural network for optic flow-based reactive navigation with dual depth encoding.

Animals and humans rely on optic flow to navigate cluttered and unknown environments. While most previous studies have focused on how organisms achieve self-motion perception through optic flow information, biological neural networks for navigation based on optic flow remain unexplored. Here, we propose a biologically plausible neural network model for optic flow-based reactive navigation. The model incorporates a primary visual cortex, which is responsible for generating a cortical representation of the optic flow field; a higher-order cortex, which calculates the focus of expansion (FOE) of
