Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) presents unique challenges due to difficulty manipulating surgical instruments within the tight confines of the oral cavity. Collisions between the end effectors and anatomical structures can be visualized through the endoscope; however, instrument shaft collisions are outside of the field-of-view. Acquiring the requisite skill set to minimize these collisions is challenging due to the lack of an appropriate training platform. In this paper, we present a TORS training platform with an integrated collision sensing system and real-time haptic feedback. Preliminar

Gingival recession is an oral exposure of the root surface due to an apical displacement of the gingival margin below the cemento-enamel junction. The root coverage is indicated for esthetic reasons, to reduce root hypersensitivity and to create or to augment keratinized tissue. Several surgical techniques have been described, the decision depending on anatomical and technical parameters. The main therapeutic goal is to achieve complete root coverage (CRC) and a satisfactory esthetic result. The purpose of this work was to make an update on the different factors that determine the success of r

On a clinical example a modified technique for increasing the width of the attached keratinized gingiva zone is presented by taking medallions of a free gingival graft 1.5-2 mm thick from the hard palate using 5 mm mucotomes and transplanting them into the gum defect zones with a simultaneous vestibular deepening in the lateral regions of the jaws. This technology has been tested over a 5-year period with long-term clinical results.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate surgical adjuncts (stents) and previous surgeries on outcomes from posterior glottic stenosis (PGS).
METHODS: PubMED/Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched for publications on adult patients undergoing surgery for PGS. Decannulation and need for additional surgeries were evaluated as outcomes. Linear mixed-effects (with random effects and fixed effects) models were used for multivariate testing.
RESULTS: In total, 516 abstracts were reviewed and 26 articles were considered for systematic review. Of these, 19 articles with 140 pooled patient cases

Treatment of cancer of the retromolar trigone (RMT) is controversial. While early lesions may be managed with single-modality, more advanced lesions may invade the mandible, pterygoid musculature, and the adjacent mucosa of the tonsillar pillar and soft palate, therefore making therapeutic decisions more complicated. Treatment options traditionally include surgical resection, external beam irradiation, and combined modality therapy. The choice of therapy is dependent on the extent of the tumor, nodal metastasis, and the medical status of the patient and comorbid conditions. The following revie

Keratinized mucosa around implants is considered essential for maintaining peri-implant health. Clinicians may find it necessary to augment keratinized tissue after implant loading when complications arise. Immobilizing the graft can be challenging when there is a complete absence of attached gingiva or when the vestibule is shallow creating an opportunity for muscle forces to move the graft. To overcome these limitations, various stents have been created aimed at improving the stability of soft-tissue grafts around implants; however, many of these stents have drawbacks. This case report prese

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the state of economic analyses in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search of published literature up to 2016 was performed. The inclusion criteria were as follows: English-language articles on economic analyses pertaining to OMS including anesthesia and pain management; dentoalveolar surgery; orthognathic, cleft, and/or obstructive sleep apnea treatment; pathology; reconstruction; temporomandibular disorders; trauma; and other. The exclusion criteria were as follows: opinion or perspective

Many publications have addressed the medical complications of tattoos, but to our knowledge there are no reports of their use to alert people in our field of potentially dangerous conditions. We present a new way to inform oral and maxillofacial colleagues about patients with a history of malignant hyperthermia (or any other life-threatening medical problem) and discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages of medical alert tattoos.

Endoscopic surgery has changed the philosophy and practice of modern surgery in all aspects of medicine. It gave rise to minimally invasive surgery procedures based on the ability to visualize and to operate via small channels. In maxillofacial surgery, our ability to see clearly the surgical field opened an entirely new world of exploration, as conditions that were once almost impossible to control and whose outcome was uncertain can be now predictably managed. in this article we will descripe the advantage of using the oral endoscope during the dental implantology procedure, and we will desc

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Select appropriate local and pedicled flaps for oral cavity reconstruction based on the location and extent of the defect and donor-site characteristics. 2. Understand the functions of the tongue and select the appropriate reconstructive technique based on the size and location of the glossectomy defect. 3. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of treating various maxillectomy defects with prosthetics, soft-tissue pedicled and free flaps, and osteocutaneous free flaps. 4. Conceptualize a reconstructiv

This review summarizes current knowledge and experience with piezosurgery, a promising, meticulous and soft tissue-sparing system for bone cutting, based on ultrasonic microvibrations. The main advantages of piezosurgery include soft tissue protection, optimal visibility in the surgical field, decreased blood loss, less vibration and noise, increased comfort for the patient and protection of tooth structure. To date it has been indicationed for use in oral and maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, traumatology and orthopaedics. The main indications in oral su

Outpatient sedation in oral and maxillofacial surgery integrates pharmacologic agents, physiologic monitoring, and airway management principles to safely perform procedures in healthy adult patients. Intravenous sedation remains the primary modality due to its rapid onset, titratability, and predictable recovery. Commonly used agents include benzodiazepines, opioids, propofol, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine, often in multimodal combinations. Safe practice requires understanding sedation depth, drug interactions, and airway physiology, as well as the ability to recognize and manage complications

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic navigation (DN) technology has ushered in a paradigm shift in dentistry, revolutionizing the precision of diverse procedures in oral and craniofacial surgery. This comprehensive review aims to review the manifold applications of DN, including implantology, endodontics, oral and dental surgeries, and other dental disciplines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough search of the online databases PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted up to March 2024. Publications associated with DN in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery were sourced.
RESULTS: Narrative literature revie

BACKGROUND: Anterior palatal fistula is often observed in the treatment of the cleft palate with a push-back palatoplasty. High rate of incomplete closure is reported. We describe a reliable new technique with reverse local flaps to close an anterior palatal fistula.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred seventeen cleft patients, treated with push-back palatoplasty, underwent repair of an anterior palatal fistula by our group. Fistulas were located in the anterior hard palate, with a variable size between 0.1 cm to more than 0.5 cm. Two reverse local flaps from the nasal mucosa of the lateral pa
