We examined and treated four patients with anophthalmic socket pain. Conditions responsible for this problem in this series included scleritis after evisceration, amputation neuroma, pain from a skull-base meningioma, and chemical dependency with drug-seeking behavior. The pain associated with the scleritis after evisceration responded to removal of the scleral remnant. The pain associated with the amputation neuroma responded to removal of the orbital implant and its pseudocapsule in which the amputation neuroma was embedded. The pain associated with the meningioma was intractable. The pain a

PURPOSE: To evaluate our patients with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis according to a new scoring system and to compare those who underwent orbital exenteration persuant to a new threshhold.
METHODS: Mucormycosis is a fungal disease that can be of acute onset, aggressive, and angioinvasive. Aggressive surgical debridement, long-term systemic antifungal therapy, and treatment of underlying predisposing factors are essential to the treatment. However, orbital exenteration is a very difficult decision to make, particularly in patients with orbital involvement, because there is little informat

Cerebrospinal fluid leaks are rarely encountered by orbital surgeons, but can occur during dacryocystorhinostomy, orbital decompression, orbital exenteration, and enucleation. The authors present a case of cerebrospinal fluid leak from an injury to the orbital roof during orbital exenteration with the use of monopolar cautery. This was repaired with multilayer closure. Surgeons performing orbital exenteration must be aware of the possibility of this complication when using monopolar electrocautery to transect the orbital contents at the apex during an exenteration.Injury to the orbital roof wi

A 55-year-old man presented with progressive "enophthalmos" of his ocular prosthesis, 12 years after secondary orbital implant placement following evisceration of a severe traumatic globe rupture. The medial orbital wall was found to be displaced inwards, associated with ethmoid sinus opacification, and consistent with post traumatic silent sinus syndrome affecting the ethmoid paranasal sinuses. The authors present the clinical and radiological findings, review the literature on silent sinus syndrome of nonmaxillary sinuses, and discuss the possible mechanisms for his presentation.

We report the first case of orbital cellulitis and endogenous endophthalmitis secondary to Proteus mirabilis bacteremia that resulted from a calculus cholecystitis. Despite resolution of the gallbladder infection with antimicrobial therapy, the patient required evisceration of the affected eye. The pathogenesis of hematogenous endophthalmitis due to Gram-negative bacilli is discussed.

Orbital implants are now routinely used after enucleation and evisceration. However exposure of the implant can lead to infection and extrusion. Hence, early repair of larger exposure with graft material is required. We describe three cases where early postoperative mucosal dehiscence was successfully managed with autologous serum.

Ophthalmic complications occurring after non-ophthalmic surgery are rare. We present a case of orbital cellulitis in a 24-year-old woman, who had undergone augmentation rhinoplasty in combination with breast augmentation. Symptoms included pain, swelling, erythema and eventual loss of vision in the left eye. Intravenous administration of antibiotics did not halt the rapid progression of this infection. On the sixth postoperative day, the patient underwent left-orbital evisceration to prevent the spread of infection to other organ systems. Despite aggressive therapy, the sequela was permanent,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Orbital metastases are an uncommon condition. They may be the clinical presentation of a previously unknown malignancy. Depending on the series, the rate of orbital metastasis as a first manifestation of a malignant tumour is 20%-42%. The clinical presentation and survival is presented in a series of 11 cases of orbital metastasis corresponding to 10 patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive retrospective study of a series of 10 adult patients diagnosed with orbital metastasis from solid tumours during a 9-year period. Metastasis involving the orbit was included, a

Orbital exenteration is an extremely mutilating procedure for patients, and reconstruction is mandatory in most cases. The inverted cone shape of the exenterated orbit poses a significant challenge for reconstructive surgeons and anaplastologists, who must collaborate closely to achieve a satisfactory outcome that enables patients to reintegrate social life more easily. This systematic review followed the 2020 PRISMA guidelines and its protocol was pre-registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD420251149891). The study focuses on the latest flap design strategies aimed at meeting the complex geometric req

PURPOSE: To review the outcomes of orbital exenteration defect reconstruction using cheek or combined cheek-forehead advancement flap.
METHODS: Charts of 14 patients who underwent reconstruction of the exenterated orbit with cheek advancement flap were reviewed. In surgery, a cheek flap elevated via a nasofacial sulcus incision, and preperiosteal dissection was advanced over the defect. The upper orbital defect, if necessary, was covered with a forehead flap, which was dissected through an incision in the midline or temporal forehead and advanced inferiorly.
RESULTS: In all patients (7 women

BACKGROUND: Traumatic eye injuries are an important cause of visual impairment and can significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Accounting for approximately 7% of all bodily injuries and 10–15% of ocular diseases, traumatic eye injuries pose a substantial medical and socioeconomic burden. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiological characteristics of traumatic open-globe injuries (OGIs) that resulted in either primary enucleation/evisceration or primary repair at a tertiary hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Mogadishu Somali

We describe a novel application of the nasal Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System flap for medial orbital wall reconstruction following orbital exenteration. A 64-year-old woman underwent type IIa exenteration for moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the right medial canthus, requiring resection of the lamina papyracea. A pedicled nasal Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System flap incorporating perichondrium and based on the dorsal nasal artery was harvested through a midline nasal incision to close a 1.5-cm communication between the orbit and nasal cavity.
