EEG Correlates of Preparatory Orienting, Contextual Updating, and Inhibition of Sensory Processing in Left Spatial Neglect.

Studies with event-related potentials have highlighted deficits in the early phases of orienting to left visual targets in right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial neglect (N+). However, brain responses associated with preparatory orienting of attention, with target novelty and with the detection of a match/mismatch between expected and actual targets (contextual updating), have not been explored in N+. Here in a study in healthy humans and brain-damaged patients of both sexes we demonstrate that frontal activity that reflects supramodal mechanisms of attentional orienting (Anterior Dire

Optimal spatial orientation which minimizes bias error in model-based radiostereometric analysis for a cementless tibial baseplate is not aligned with the anatomic orientation defined by the global coordinate system.

BACKGROUND: Bias error in determining tibial baseplate migration based on maximum total point motion (MTPM) in model-based radiostereometric analysis (MBRSA) should be minimized because this error can be large ranging from 0.21 mm to 0.47 mm based on previous reports for cemented baseplates. For a cementless tibial baseplate, the primary objective was to determine the optimal spatial orientation which minimizes the bias error in MTPM. METHODS: A baseplate-sawbone construct was oriented in 24 different combinations of flexion and valgus angles with three pairs of radiographs acquired for each

The role of pregnenolone sulphate in spatial orientation-acquisition and retention: an interplay between cognitive potentiation and mood regulation.

Neurosteroids can alter neuronal excitability interacting with specific neurotransmitter receptors, thus affecting several functions such as cognition and emotionality. In this study, we investigated, in adult male rats, the effects of the acute administration of pregnenolone-sulfate (PREGS) (10 mg/Kg, s.c.) on cognitive processes using the Can test, a non aversive spatial/visual task which allows the assessment of spatial information-acquisition during the baseline training, and of memory retention in the longitudinal study. Furthermore, on the basis of PREGS pharmacological profile, the modu

Cognitive underpinnings of stress-induced skilled walking performance levels: The independent roles of memory and spatial orientation in mice.

Stress exerts a profound yet complex influence on motor adaptation, with its effects on skilled walking performance mediated by cognitive and neurobiological factors. This study explored the impact of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) during adolescence on skilled walking performance in male and female Balb/cJ mice. The primary focus was on identifying memory and spatial orientation as potential predictors of motor resilience. A cohort of 133 mice was evaluated using the Ladder Rung Walking Test (LRWT) to assess motor proficiency, with skilled walking performance scores (SWPS) categoriz

Acute peripheral unilateral vestibulopathy of the whole nerve causes increased impairment of spatial orientation and poorer long-term outcome.

BACKGROUND: Acute peripheral unilateral vestibulopathy (UVP) is the third most common cause of peripheral vestibular vertigo. Etiologically, a viral inflammation is assumed. In most cases, an isolated dysfunction of the superior part of the vestibular nerve can be found (superior part UVP = sUVP), but an additional involvement of the inferior part has also been shown (whole nerve UVP = s+iUVP). The aim of the study was (a) to determine the prevalence of an additional inferior part involvement, (b) to quantify the extent of vestibular deficit comparing sUVP vs. s+iUVP and (c) to examine the lon

Environmental overlap influences goal-oriented coding of spatial sequences differently along the long-axis of hippocampus.

When navigating our world we often first plan or retrieve a route to our goal, avoiding alternative paths to other destinations. Inspired by computational and animal models, we have recently demonstrated evidence that the human hippocampus supports prospective spatial coding, mediated by interactions with the prefrontal cortex. But the relationship between such signals and the need to discriminate possible routes based on their goal remains unclear. In the current study, we combined human fMRI, multi-voxel pattern analysis, and an established paradigm for contrasting memories of nonoverlapping

Accounting for the phase, spatial frequency and orientation demands of the task improves metrics based on the visual Strehl ratio.

Advances in ophthalmic instrumentation have allowed high order aberrations to be measured in vivo. These measurements describe the distortions to a plane wavefront entering the eye, but not the effect they have on visual performance. One metric for predicting visual performance from a wavefront measurement uses the visual Strehl ratio, calculated in the optical transfer function (OTF) domain (VSOTF) (Thibos et al., 2004). We considered how well such a metric captures empirical measurements of the effects of defocus, coma and secondary astigmatism on letter identification and on reading. We sho

Pupil dilation during orienting of attention and conscious detection of visual targets in patients with left spatial neglect.

Right Brain-Damaged patients (RBD) with left spatial neglect (N+), are characterised by deficits in orienting and re-orienting attention to stimuli in the contralesional left side of space. In a recent ERPs study with visual stimuli (Lasaponara et al., 2018) we have pointed out that the pathological attentional bias of N+ is matched with exaggerated novelty reaction and contextual updating of targets in the right ipsilesional space and reduced novelty reaction and contextual updating of targets in the left contralesional space. To characterise further the attentional performance of N+, here we

Spatial coherence of oriented white matter microstructure: Applications to white matter regions associated with genetic similarity.

We present a method to discover differences between populations with respect to the spatial coherence of their oriented white matter microstructure in arbitrarily shaped white matter regions. This method is applied to diffusion MRI scans of a subset of the Human Connectome Project dataset: 57 pairs of monozygotic and 52 pairs of dizygotic twins. After controlling for morphological similarity between twins, we identify 3.7% of all white matter as being associated with genetic similarity (35.1 k voxels, p<10-4, false discovery rate 1.5%), 75% of which spatially clusters into twenty-two contiguou

Visuo-spatial orienting during active exploratory behavior: Processing of task-related and stimulus-related signals.

Functional imaging studies have associated dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal regions with the control of visuo-spatial attention. Previous studies demonstrated that the activity of both the dorsal and the ventral attention systems can be modulated by many different factors, related both to the stimuli and the task. However, the vast majority of this work utilized stereotyped paradigms with simple and repeated stimuli. This is at odd with any real life situation that instead involve complex combinations of different types of co-occurring signals, thus raising the question of the ecological sig

Control networks and hemispheric asymmetries in parietal cortex during attentional orienting in different spatial reference frames.

Neuropsychological research has consistently demonstrated that spatial attention can be anchored in one of several coordinate systems, including those defined with respect to an observer (viewer-centered), to the gravitational vector (environment-centered), or to individual objects (object-centered). In the present study, we used hemodynamic correlates of brain function to investigate the neural systems that mediate attentional control in two competing reference frames. Healthy volunteers were cued to locations defined in either viewer-centered or object-centered space to discriminate the shap

Lasting alteration of spatial orientation induced by passive motion in rabbits and its possible relevance to mal de débarquement syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mal de débarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a chronic disorder of spatial orientation with a persistent false sensation of self-motion, whose onset typically follows prolonged exposure to passive motion of a transport vehicle. Development of similar but transient after-sensations mimicking the exposed motion and associated postural instability, indicative of central vestibular adaptation, are common. The cause of MdDS is thought to be a subsequent failure to readapt to a stationary environment. However, vestibular plasticity pertinent to this illness has not been studied sufficiently. B

Effects of spatial learning using tactile maps on orientation accuracy by path integration and mental imagery walking in blindfolded sighted people.

PURPOSE: Focusing on individuals with visual impairment, this study investigated the effects of spatial learning using tactile maps on orientation accuracy by path integration in physical and mental imagery walking scenarios. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve blindfolded sighted people learned nonlooping routes with two corners using tactile maps composed of volumetric raised-line elements, then navigated the routes physically and mentally. At four orientation points along the route-the starting point, Corner A, Corner B, and the endpoint-participants indicated the direction of the other points b

Behavioural correlates of striatal glial fibrillary acidic protein in the 3-nitropropionic acid rat model: disturbed walking pattern and spatial orientation.

The 3-nitropropionic acid animal model is a model where excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, mechanisms common to various neurodegenerative diseases, are involved. The present study investigated whether behavioural alterations in this model were related to striatal damage. Wistar and Lewis rats were exposed to 3-nitropropionic acid and their behavioural performance (open field, walking pattern and Morris Water Maze task) was tested after the injections and after a recovery period of 3 weeks. No changes in activity were found in the open field test. Altered walking pa

On the spatial arrangement of iso-orientation bands in the cat's visual cortical areas 17 and 18: a 14C-deoxyglucose study.

The horizontal organization of iso-orientation bands in the cat's visual cortex has been investigated with the 14C-Deoxyglucose method (Sokoloff et al. 1977). Our findings suggest that in areas 17 and 18 the network formed by the bands representing one orientation comprises three basic patterns. Most frequently seen is a set of 2-4 iso-orientation bands which, straight or curved, run parallel to each other through cortical volumes usually less than 3 mm across. Beyond that distance the individual bands either end abruptly or fuse with adjacent bands. Less frequently seen are circular or triang

No Evidence for a Role of Spatially Modulated α-Band Activity in Tactile Remapping and Short-Latency, Overt Orienting Behavior.

Oscillatory α-band activity is commonly associated with spatial attention and multisensory prioritization. It has also been suggested to reflect the automatic transformation of tactile stimuli from a skin-based, somatotopic reference frame into an external one. Previous research has not convincingly separated these two possible roles of α-band activity. Previous experimental paradigms have used artificially long delays between tactile stimuli and behavioral responses to aid relating oscillatory activity to these different events. However, this strategy potentially blurs the temporal relationsh

Right middle occipital gyrus is associated with egocentric spatial orientation during body tilt: Evidence from a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Accurate perception of the orientation of external objects relative to the body, known as egocentric spatial orientation, is fundamental to performing action. Previously, we found via behavioural and magnetic resonance imaging voxel-based morphometry studies that egocentric spatial orientation is strongly distorted when the whole body is tilted with respect to gravity, and that the magnitude of this perceptual distortion is correlated with the grey matter volume of the right middle occipital gyrus (rMOG). In the present study, we further validated the association between the neural processing
