3D Printer-Assisted Layered Fabrication of a Novel Appliance for Oral Myofunctional Therapy and Functional Evaluation of Its Effects on Orofacial Muscles During Wear.

Aim Balanced function of the orofacial muscles is important for normal occlusion and dentition; however, patients with malocclusion often present with myofunctional disorder (MFD). Myofunctional therapy (MFT) has received much attention as a method for reducing MFD. Moreover, prefabricated functional appliances (PFAs) have been developed as a method to eliminate abnormal muscle pressure and guide the tongue into the correct position. However, PFAs have disadvantages, such as poor intraoral retention, limited usage time due to discomfort and poor patient compliance, and changes in the axis of t

[Orthodontic treatment in cases of mandibulo-facial dysostosis].

The author describes the clinical picture of mandibulofacial dysostosis and gives reasons for the necessity for early orthodontic treatment. Two examples are presented. The analysis of the case histories of a total of 10 patients with this syndrome showed that the responsiveness to functional orthodontic appliances is greatest in children with bilateral mandibulofacial dysostosis. The need for co-operation with other disciplines involved is pointed to.

Fixed orthodontics in a Class II Division 2 young adult with Brodie's occlusion and three-dimensional anomalies using a Herbst appliance and miniscrew: A case report.

In this case report, we described the successful treatment of a 17-year-old male with Class II Division 2 and a Brodie occlusion, with bilateral scissor bite, maxillomandibular transverse discrepancy, deep overbite and Class II molar relationship, using a fixed Herbst appliance. The treatment was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the Herbst appliance was used to advance the mandible, correcting the sagittal relationship while simultaneously improving transverse and vertical discrepancies, with minimal reliance on patient compliance. In the second phase, fixed appliances combined w

Class II subdivision treatment and stability with asymmetric Herbst appliance: A case report.

Non-surgical treatment of Class II subdivision may involve complex mechanics or asymmetric tooth extraction in its resolution. This report demonstrates the result and the short-term stability of Class II subdivision treated with asymmetrically installed Herbst appliance followed by conventional fixed orthodontic appliance. The approach allowed the correction of the unilateral Class II molar relationship and increased overjet, as well as the deviation of dental midlines, with improvement in lip posture and facial profile. The results remained stable two years after treatment, confirming the tre

Comparison of anchorage reinforcement with temporary anchorage devices or a Herbst appliance during lingual orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction in cases of aplasia or extraction requires stable anchorage. Reinforcement may be achieved by using either temporary anchorage devices (TAD) or a fixed, functional appliance. The objective was to compare the clinical effectiveness of both methods by testing the null-hypothesis of no significant difference in velocity of space closure (in mm/month) between them. In addition, we set out to describe the quality of posterior space management and treatment-related factors, such as loss of anchorage

Treatment of Class II Malocclusion and Impacted Canines with Two-phase Orthodontic Treatment.

Twin Block appliance has been widely used for the treatment of Class II malocclusions in growing subjects, due to its versatility and its highly compliance nature. There are certain clinical indications where functional appliances can be used successfully in Class II malocclusion as in a growing patient. In using these appliances, the main concern is compliance of patients. This appliance simplifies the progression of treatment with fixed orthodontic braces later on. In this case, a 14-year-old adolescent was treated with Twin Block appliance followed by fixed appliances for finishing and deta

Clinical guidelines and planning for orthodontic-surgical treatment using clear aligners.

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic surgery, a well-established procedure for correcting significant skeletal imbalances, addresses both aesthetic and functional concerns. Traditionally, fixed orthodontic appliances have been preferred due to their effectiveness in managing dental movements and ensuring postoperative stability. However, the increasing demand for more aesthetic and comfortable options has led to the growing use of clear aligners, even in complex surgical cases. Although aligners present some limitations, such as reduced control over certain dental movements and the need for greater pati

Angle's Class II division 1 associated to mandibular retrusion and skeletal open bite: a 5-year post-orthodontic/orthopedic treatment follow-up.

Obtaining long term stability allied to functional and aesthetic balance is the main goal of any orthodontic-orthopedic therapy. This case report describes the orthodontic therapy applied to a 7-year-9-month old child, who presented a Class II, division 1 malocclusion associated to skeletal open bite. Functional and skeletal corrections (sagittally and vertically) were obtained by means of mandible advancement achieved with a closed Balter's bionator appliance followed by a fixed appliance. This approach showed to be efficient in accomplishing both functional and aesthetic goals, that were kep

Long-term stability of mandibular orthopedic repositioning.

Mandibular anterior repositioning appliances attempt to diminish temporomandibular joint pain, soft tissue noise, and myofascial discomfort by altering condyle-disc relationships. Secondary stabilization of the occlusion to this arbitrary anterior position through orthodontic tooth movement may significantly alter functional and muscular relationships. A case report is illustrated to show that as the functional environment attempted to reestablish equilibrium through adaptation, relapse occurred as the condyles "seated" posteriorly and superiorly toward their original relationship within the f
