The three-dimensional characteristics of the intracellular components of acinar cells were revealed using the osmium-DMSO-osmium method. The specimens were macerated in diluted osmium after being fractured in DMSO solution. The stacks of the Golgi apparatus, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria are clearly seen. The lamellae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, located around the nuclei and the Golgi apparatus, are shown in three-dimensional images. At high magnification, the mitochondria clearly reveal their cristae mitochondriales.

The oral manifestations in 27 patients with Urbach--Wiethe disease (UWD) discovered in Northern Sweden are described. We describe a procedure for detection of fat emboli in formalin fixed tissue using osmium tetroxide postfixation. Intravascular fat in tissue postfixed in osmium tetroxide, embedded in epoxy or paraffin, and stained with toluidine blue, hematoxylin, or Oil Red O is more easily visualized than in frozen tissue that is stained with Oil Red O. With these methods, fat emboli may be detected years after the initial autopsy.

Reconstructions from serial ultrathin sections of microvascular endothelium suggest that gaps, which are induced by a range of stimuli, may pass through endothelial cells as well as between them. In this work, a panel of twelve ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) derived N,O,O-tridentate complexes (1a-2f) with a variation of longer, branched and unbranched alkyl substituents was synthesized and characterized via NMR, HRMS, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. In 101 patients treated for knee joint hydrops with intra-articular osmic acid injection, an increased incidence of proteinuria and microscopic haematuria was noted on the first day after injection. This increase subsided rapidly and had disappeared 3 days after the injection. Three patients showed transient glycosuria. No signs of permanent renal damage appeared in any patient.

The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and X-ray crystal structure of a new chiral triosmium alkylidyne carbonyl cluster, (R,S)-[Os3(mu-H)2(CO)9{mu3-CPPh2(eta(5)-C5H4)Fe(eta(5)-C5H3(PPh2)CH(Me)NM(2)}] (1) are described. Compound 1 crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group P2(1) and its absolute configuration has been established.The structure consists of an Os3C metal core with one of the PPh2 moieties of the chiral ferrocenylphosphine bonded to the apical alkylidyne carbon atom to give a zwitterionic cluster complex, reminiscent of the phosphorus ylide.
