Larvae of the disease vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) readily develop in ammonia rich sewage in the British Virgin Islands. To understand how the larvae survive in ammonia levels that are lethal to most animals, an examination of ammonia excretory physiology in larvae collected from septic-water and freshwater was carried out. A. aegypti larvae were found to be remarkably plastic in dealing with high external ammonia through the modulation of NH4+ excretion at the anal papillae, measured using the scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET), and NH4+ secretion in the primary urine by

Marine elasmobranchs retain relatively high levels of urea to counterbalance the osmotic strength of seawater. Oviparous species, such as the little skate Raja erinacea, release encapsulated embryos that hatch after about 9 months on the seafloor. To study the ureosmotic capability of skate embryos, we measured a variety of possible osmolytes and ornithine-urea cycle (OUC) enzyme activities in little skate embryos, and determined their physiological response to dilute seawater (75% SW) exposure relative to controls (100% SW). The urea:trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) + other osmolytes ratio was 2.3

It has long been held that cortisol, acting through a single receptor, carries out both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions in teleost fish. The recent finding that fish express a gene with high sequence similarity to the mammalian mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) suggests the possibility that a hormone other than cortisol carries out some mineralocorticoid functions in fish. To test for this possibility, we examined the effect of in vivo cortisol, 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) and aldosterone on salinity tolerance, gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase (NKA) activity and mRNA levels of NKA alpha 1a a

Drought-resistance strategies play a crucial role in determining tree resilience and mortality. During drought, stomatal closure limits photosynthesis and triggers the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. This process may decrease carbohydrate availability, which is key for antioxidant defense and osmoregulation. However, the mechanisms by which different species coordinate physiological and biochemical responses to drought, particularly for dryland tree plantations, remain poorly understood. To this end, we analyzed gas exchange, leaf water potential, and biochemical variables in apple

Water potential is the driving force behind the movement of water within the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Measuring water potential and its components provides valuable information about plant- and root water relations, including osmoregulation. Here, we describe a straightforward method for determining water and osmotic potential, as well as cell turgor in roots, using dew point hygrometry. The chapter begins with a brief overview of issues related to plant and root water potential, and then proceeds to describe the principles and measurement procedures of dew point hygrometry in more det

As in osmoregulation, mineralocorticoid signaling is implicated in the control of brain-behavior actions. Nevertheless, the understanding of this role is limited, partly due to the mortality of mineralocorticoid receptor (MR)-knockout (KO) mice due to impaired Na+ reabsorption. In teleost fish, a distinct mineralocorticoid system has only been identified recently. Here, we generated a constitutive MR-KO medaka as the first adult-viable MR-KO animal, since MR expression is modest in osmoregulatory organs but high in the brain of adult medaka as for most teleosts. Hyper- and hypo-osmoregulation

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is the commonest form of normovolaemic or dilutional hyponatraemia. The diagnosis of SIADH should be considered if the five cardinal criteria are fulfilled (hypotonic hyponatraemia, natriuresis, urine osmolality in excess of plasma osmolality, absence of oedema and volume depletion, normal renal and adrenal function). The clinical features are principally neuro-muscular and gastro-intestinal, the severity of which is related to both the absolute serum sodium concentration and its rate of fall, particularly if greater than 0.5

Hyperventilation is a common response in fish exposed to elevated water CO2. It is believed to lessen the respiratory acidosis associated with hypercapnia by lowering arterial PCO2, but the contribution of hyperventilation to blood acid-base compensation has yet to be quantified. Hyperventilation may also increase the flux of irons across the gill epithelium and the cost of osmoregulation, owing to the osmo-respiratory compromise. Therefore, hypercapnia exposed fish may increase standard metabolic rate (SMR) leaving less energy for physiological functions such as foraging, migration, growth an

Osmoregulation is essential to life in vertebrates and osmoreception is a fundamental element in osmoregulation. Progress in characterizing the mechanisms that mediate osmoreception has been made possible by using a uniquely accessible cell model, the prolactin (PRL) cell of the euryhaline tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. In addition to a brief historical overview, we offer a summary of our recent progress on signal transduction and osmosensitivity in the tilapia PRL cell model. Prolactin is a central regulator of hydromineral balance in teleosts in freshwater (FW). Consistent with its essent

BACKGROUND: Neurosarcoidosis is a rare and aggressive variant of systemic sarcoidosis which may result in hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. We report a case of hypothalamic hypopituitarism secondary to neurosarcoidosis complicated by adipsic diabetes insipidus (ADI). Initiation of anti-tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) therapy resulted in both radiological disease remission and recovery of osmoregulated thirst appreciation after 3 months.
CASE SUMMARY: A 22-year-old man was referred to the endocrinology service with profound weight gain, polyuria and lethargy. Biochemical testing confirmed a

Osmotic stress induces pleiotropic physiological disruptions in aquatic organisms; however, the intestinal proteomic responses of euryhaline teleosts to salinity, alkalinity, and saline-alkalinity exposure remain insufficiently characterized. In the present study, intestinal histopathology, antioxidant enzymatic activities, and proteomic profiles were investigated in Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters, 1852) subjected to 24-h acute individual and concurrent salinity-alkalinity challenges. Pronounced histopathological lesions and significant alterations in enzymatic antioxidant defenses were obser

Gills are multifunctional organs that integrate respiration with homeostasis, including energy demanding processes such as osmoregulation and excretion. In osmoregulating decapod crustaceans, two spatially segregated gill types differ in function, ultrastructure and membrane composition, as well as in their responses to environmental change. Yet mitochondrial function in crab gills remains poorly characterized. Here, for the first time, we used high-resolution respirometry with a substrate-uncoupler-inhibitor titration protocol to characterize the mitochondrial phenotypes in anterior (respirat

Natural transformation with R. rhizogenes enhances osmotic stress tolerance in oilseed rape through increasing osmoregulation capacity, enhancing maintenance of hydraulic integrity and total antioxidant capacity. Transformation of plants using wild strains of agrobacteria is termed natural transformation and is not covered by GMO legislation in, e.g., European Union and Japan. In this study, offspring lines of Rhizobium rhizogenes naturally transformed oilseed rape (Brassica napus), i.e., A11 and B3 (termed root-inducing (Ri) lines), were investigated for osmotic stress resilience. Under polye

Low salinity exposure triggers a series of physiological responses in marine mollusks, whereas the underlying regulatory mechanism in Haliotis diversicolor-a stenohaline marine gastropod with an optimal growth salinity of 30-35‰-under low-salinity conditions remain unclear. In this study, H. diversicolor was exposed to acute low-salinity conditions for 96 h at salinities of 18, 20, and 22‰, with natural seawater at 30‰ as the control. Physiological and histological indices were determined at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, and multivariate analyses were performed using PCA and DFA.Low salinity expos

Coastal marine ecosystems are submitted to variations of several abiotic and biotic parameters, some of them related to global change. Among them the ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (UVBR: 280-320 nm) may strongly impact planktonic fish larvae. The consequences of an increase of UVBR on the osmoregulatory function of Dicentrarchus labrax larvae have been investigated in this study. In young larvae of D. labrax, as in other teleosts, osmoregulation depends on tegumentary ion transporting cells, or ionocytes, mainly located on the skin of the trunk and of the yolk sac. As early D. labrax larvae p

Under normal physiological conditions, the osmolarity of extracellular fluids (ECFs) and natremia are controlled by two regulatory mechanisms modulating the water balance and sodium outflow from information collected by the osmoreceptors and baroreceptors, respectively. As well, under normal physiological conditions, water and electrolytes of brain ECFs are secreted by the endothelial cells of brain capillaries. Furthermore, isotonicity is present on both sides of the blood-brain barrier. In the event of systemic osmolarity disorders, water transport subject to osmosis laws occurs at the level

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with a multitude of hypothalamic pituitary abnormalities, although it is unknown which aberrations reflect disease causation and which are the consequences of severe malnutrition. Among these endocrinopathies, hypothalamic-posterior pituitary aberrations have been described, including disorders of osmoregulation. We report the case of an adolescent female with a history of severe AN, restricting subtype, treated aggressively with multiple hospitalizations. During hospitalization for severe weakness and lethargy, her course of medical stabilization was

INTRODUCTION: Copeptin concentrations are a useful component of the diagnostic workup of paediatric patients with polyuria and polydipsia, but the value of measuring copeptin in patients with hyponatraemia is less clear.
CASE REPORTS: We report 5 children with hyponatraemia in the context of different underlying pathologies. Copeptin concentrations were elevated in 4 cases (13.7, 14.4, 26.1, and 233 pmol/L; reference range 2.4-8.6 pmol/L), suggesting that non-osmoregulated vasopressin release (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone) was the underlying mechanism for low sodium levels.

Water intoxication is a serious problem in many patients with chronic psychiatric illness. In an effort to determine the mechanism of this disorder, we investigated the osmoregulation of water intake and antidiuretic function in psychiatric patients with polydipsia and hyponatremia and in matched controls with psychiatric illness but neither polydipsia nor hyponatremia. We found that a water load suppressed plasma osmolality and vasopressin and urine osmolality in both groups, but that urinary dilution and free water clearance were impaired in the patients with hyponatremia, even though plasma

In order to investigate the possible role of oxytocin in osmoregulation and its response to stress, plasma immunoreactive oxytocin was measured during hypertonic saline infusion and insulin-induced hypoglycaemia in a group of normal subjects, four patients with idiopathic diabetes insipidus and one patient with DIDMOAD syndrome (the syndrome of diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy and deafness). The results were compared with those of plasma immunoreactive vasopressin to the same stimuli. As expected, there was a rise in plasma vasopressin in the normal subjects to both tests:
