Osteologic analysis of ethnic differences in supernumerary ethmoidal foramina: implications for endoscopic sinus and orbit surgery.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the position of the ethmoidal arteries is critical to enable safe endoscopic sinus and orbital surgery. The presence of a third or "middle" ethmoid variant has recently become more relevant as endoscopic intraconal surgery continues to advance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the presence of supernumerary (ie, over 2) ethmoid foramina in different ethnicities and genders. METHODS: Morphometric osteologic measurements were performed in 273 orbits. Prevalence of supernumerary ethmoid foramina and orbital length data were obtained from human skulls of Asian (n

An osteological study of supratrochlear foramen of humerus of south Indian population with reference to anatomical and clinical implications.

The supratrochlear foramen (STF) is an important and relatively common anatomic variation in the lower end of the humerus in humans. The present study on south Indian population is an attempt to highlight the incidence, morphological features and clinical importance of STF. The study was conducted on dried human humeri of unknown sex and free of pathological changes. The presence of a STF was noted for its shape and divided into three types (oval, round, and irregular). In bones where the foramen was absent the translucency of the septum between the coronoid and the radial fossa was noted by p

[Tooth pathology analysis of osteological material from the Medieval locality of Saint Pantelejmon church in Nis].

INTRODUCTION: Medieval necropolis at the porch of St. Panteleimon church in Nis, from 12th century represents a typical Serbian necropolis, which has its analogies in several areas in Serbia. Preservation of the skeletal remains belongs to category of good and medium preservation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the work was to study the skeletal remains for the prevalence of tooth caries, localization of caries lesions, presence of abrasion, supragingival tartar and resorption of alveolar bone as the indicator of periodontal disease. METHOD: The analyses included 42 skeletal remains. The anthropologi

Schmorl's nodes in two 19th-20th century Spanish osteological collections from Valladolid and Granada.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how age at death, sex, and socio-historical context relate to the frequency, location, and severity of Schmorl's nodes. MATERIALS: The sample comprised thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of 192 skeletons from two contemporary documented osteological collections from Spain, in Valladolid and Granada, both of which contain individuals who died during the second half of the 20th century. METHODS: Schmorl's nodes were recorded on the superior and inferior surfaces of vertebral bodies and their location was categorized in one of three areas: center, canal, and periphery.

Combining morphological traits and measurements of the skull for osteological sex estimation using random forest modeling.

Forensic anthropologists commonly estimate osteological sex using separate morphological and metric analyses, without integrating both data types into a single classification model. Combining data types into one model has the potential to increase sex classification accuracies for the skull. Therefore, the present study seeks to improve classification accuracies for the skull by combining morphological and metric variables using random forest (RF) modeling. The main objectives are (1) generate multiple RF models that incorporate various combinations of morphological and metric variables for es

Vascular and Osteological Morphology of Expanded Digit Tips Suggests Specialization in the Wandering Salamander (Aneides vagrans).

For over a century researchers have marveled at the square-shaped toe tips of several species of climbing salamanders (genus Aneides), speculating about the function of large blood sinuses therein. Wandering salamanders (Aneides vagrans) have been reported to exhibit exquisite locomotor control while climbing, jumping, and gliding high (88 m) within the redwood canopy; however, a detailed investigation of their digital vascular system has yet to be conducted. Here, we describe the vascular and osteological structure of, and blood circulation through, the distal regions of the toes of A. vagran

Hypoglossal canal: an osteological and morphometric study on a collection of dried skulls in an Italian population: clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The hypoglossal canal is a dual bone canal at the cranial base near the occipital condyles. The filaments of the hypoglossal nerve pass through the canal. It also transmits the meningeal branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery, the venous plexus and meningeal branches of the hypoglossal nerve. The hypoglossal nerve innervates all the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue except the palatoglossal and is fundamental in physiological functions as phonation and deglutition. A surgical approach to the canal requires knowledge of the main morphometric data by neurosurgeons. ME

Do computed tomography findings agree with traditional osteological examination? The case of porous cranial lesions.

OBJECTIVE: The current study evaluates the feasibility of using clinical cranial computed tomography (CT) scans for assessing the presence and morphology of porous cranial lesions (cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis). METHODS: Observers (n = 4) conducted three independent evaluations of porous cranial lesions based on photographs, 2-D CT, and 3-D CT scans of archaeological crania. Evaluations of the crania from each viewing scenario were compared to findings from direct macroscopic observation. MATERIALS: Twenty-two complete adult crania from the Peruvian sites of Pachacamac and Chicama.

Osteological Observations on the Alytid Anura Latonia nigriventer with Comments on Functional Morphology, Biogeography, and Evolutionary History.

The Hula Painted Frog (Latonia nigriventer) is a rare frog species endemic to the Hula Valley, Israel. The species is the sole relict of a clade that was widespread mainly in Europe from the Oligocene until the beginning of the Pleistocene. The osteological characteristics of L. nigriventer are described based on X-ray microtomography scans of extant specimens and Pleistocene bones from the Hula Valley, to elucidate the evolutionary history of Alytidae and more specifically of Latonia. Based on the osteological description of L. nigriventer, we now better understand the differences, between La

Osteological and dental markers of health in the transition from the Late Antique to the Early Medieval period in Croatia.

The purpose of this study is to analyze health at the transition from the Late Antique (LA) to the Early Medieval (EM) period in Croatia. Results of the analyses of skeletal remains are compared with historical and archaeological data to test the hypothesis that the transition was catastrophic. An additional objective is to determine whether the transition was a uniform process, or differentially affected the past inhabitants of Croatia because of various local considerations. To accomplish this, four markers of health: cribra orbitalia, linear enamel hypoplasia, nonspecific periostitis, and t

Osteological and morphometric observations on intervertebral joints in the canine pre-diaphragmatic thoracic spine (Th1-Th9).

The incidence of facet aplasia was investigated in three groups of pure-bred dogs. We examined large breeds (Rough Collies, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, German Shepherd Dogs), chondrodystrophic breeds (Dachshunds, Pekinese dogs), and small breeds (Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese dogs). Uni- or bilateral aplasia of zygapophyseal (facet) joints was exclusively found in juvenile and adult small dogs, in which the incidence of aplasia ranged from between 26% (Th1) and 63% (Th8). There was no evidence that aplasia of zygapophyseal joints increases the risk of developing inter

The Slothful Claw: Osteology and Taphonomy of Nothronychus mckinleyi and N. graffami (Dinosauria: Theropoda) and Anatomical Considerations for Derived Therizinosaurids.

Nothronychus was the first definitive therizinosaurian discovered in North America and currently represents the most specialized North American therizinosaurian genus. It is known from two species, No. mckinleyi from the Moreno Hill Formation (middle Turonian) in west-central New Mexico, and No. graffami from the Tropic Shale (early Turonian) in south-central Utah. Both species are represented by partial to nearly complete skeletons that have helped elucidate evolutionary trends in Therizinosauria. In spite of the biogeographical and evolutionary importance of these two taxa, neither has recei

The cranial osteology and feeding ecology of the metriorhynchid crocodylomorph genera Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus from the late Jurassic of Europe.

BACKGROUND: Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus are characteristic genera of aquatic, large-bodied, macrophagous metriorhynchid crocodylomorphs. Recent studies show that these genera were apex predators in marine ecosystems during the latter part of the Late Jurassic, with robust skulls and strong bite forces optimized for feeding on large prey. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we present comprehensive osteological descriptions and systematic revisions of the type species of both genera, and in doing so we resurrect the genus Plesiosuchus for the species Dakosaurus manselii. Both species are diag

Osteology of the long-whiskered catfish Iheringichthys labrosus Lütken, 1874 (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) from the upper Paraná River basin, southern Brazil.

Iheringichthys labrosus is a catfish from the Paraná River basin with a peculiar conical snout, small mouth, thin premaxillary dentigerous plate, and broad upper lip folded posteriorly, differing from other genera of the Pimelodidae except for the monotypic Bergiaria. This comprehensive study on cleared and stained specimens and dry skeletons of Iheringichthys labrosus demonstrates many similarities with Pimelodus maculatus, showing a conservative skeleton with differences only in the shape of buccal apparatus bones. Bergiaria westermanni diverges from I. labrosus only by a reduced premaxilla

Osteology of Carnufex carolinensis (Archosauria: Psuedosuchia) from the Pekin Formation of North Carolina and Its Implications for Early Crocodylomorph Evolution.

Crocodylomorphs originated in the Late Triassic and were the only crocodile-line archosaurs to survive the end-Triassic extinction. Recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that the closest relatives of these generally gracile, small-bodied taxa were a group of robust, large-bodied predators known as rauisuchids implying a problematic morphological gap between early crocodylomorphs and their closest relatives. Here we provide a detailed osteological description of the recently named early diverging crocodylomorph Carnufex carolinensis from the Upper Triassic Pekin Formation of North Carolina and a

A Study on the Femoral Neck-Shaft Angle in an Adult Sample From Andhra Pradesh: Osteological and Radiological Measurements.

The femoral neck-shaft angle (NSA) is a crucial anatomical parameter that plays a significant role in hip biomechanics, lower limb alignment, and load distribution across the hip joint. Variations in femoral NSA are linked to orthopedic conditions and have implications for surgical planning, prosthetic design, and forensic analysis. This study aimed to assess the femoral NSA in an adult sample from Andhra Pradesh using both osteological and radiological methods and to evaluate its variations based on side, gender, and age. An observational study was conducted from September to November 2024 at

Osteological evidence for juvenile vitamin D deficiency in a 19th century suburban population from Surrey, England.

Vitamin D deficiency rickets was considered endemic in the industrialized cities of 19th century England, but was rarely reported in more rural and suburban areas. The commercial excavation of St. John's Church, Redhill, Surrey, UK provided an opportunity to examine to what extent suburban children were affected by rickets and the factors responsible for its development. Seventy-nine non-adults (0-17 years) from St. John's Church were subjected to macroscopic and radiographic analysis to identify skeletal manifestations of vitamin D deficiency. Rachitic lesions were identified in 14/79 individ

Examining the osteological paradox: Skeletal stress in mass graves versus civilians at the Greek colony of Himera (Sicily).

OBJECTIVES: Bioarchaeologists interpret skeletal stress as evidence of resilience or frailty, where absence of lesions might result from lack of exposure to pathogens (i.e., good health) or extreme vulnerability (i.e., selection). We examine physiological stress in two skeletal series from Greek Himera: (1) nine mass graves from the battles of Himera (480 and 409 BCE) and (2) Himeran civilians (648-409 BCE). Civilians are assumed to have died from multiple causes, including ill health leading to their deaths. Individuals from the battles presumably died while in relatively good health, in batt

Alterations of skull bones found in anencephalic skeletons from an identified osteological collection. Two case reports.

One of the most common conditions during fetal development is anencephaly, which often involves many identification difficulties in the context of physical anthropology, as it causes severe skull challenges. In this paper, we describe the alterations found in the skulls of two perinatal individuals with anencephaly from the osteological collection of identified infants in the Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada, Spain. Both subjects of study are in perfect state of preservation. Despite the severe malformations, all skull bones have been targeted and identified, as the possibi

Typing late prehistoric cows and bulls--osteology and genetics of cattle at the Eketorp ringfort on the Öland island in Sweden.

Human management of livestock and the presence of different breeds have been discussed in archaeozoology and animal breeding. Traditionally osteometrics has been the main tool in addressing these questions. We combine osteometrics with molecular sex identifications of 104 of 340 morphometrically analysed bones in order to investigate the use of cattle at the Eketorp ringfort on the Öland island in Sweden. The fort is dated to 300-1220/50 A.D., revealing three different building phases. In order to investigate specific patterns and shifts through time in the use of cattle the genetic data is ev
