Osteoid osteoma of foot and ankle account for ten percent of benign bone tumors and commonly involve the talus and metatarsals. Its occurrence in calcaneus is extremely rare and can mimic ankle instability, subtalar arthritis, osteochondritis or plantar fasciitis leading to delay in diagnosis. We present the case of a 17 year old boy with periarticular osteoid osteoma in the calcaneum, who presented following an ankle sprain. He was successfully treated with CT guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation and we feel that it is a safe, precise and effective treatment option for even periarticul

We describe the medical management of an acetabular osteoid osteoma in an 11-year-old girl. There was a 2-year delay until proper diagnosis of the patient's pathology was made. Accurate localization of the nidus in the subchondral bone, involving the cartilage, is difficult on the basis of plain radiographs. All imaging methods, including computed tomography, MRI, and bone scintigraphy, were used to confirm the diagnosis. We proposed medical treatment to avoid possible severe complications from surgical intervention. At the patient's latest follow-up visit, after 2 years of medical treatment w

Osteoid osteoma is a benign tumor commonly found in young patients. The most interesting feature of the tumor is its peculiar obvious pain. The intensity of pain produced by osteoid osteoma is unproportionate to its nature and size. Much has been written about the mechanism of this symptom of the tumor and the specific characteristics of the pain that can be misleading when appearing as radicular pain especially when some subtle neurologic signs and symptoms accompany the pain. In this article, 12 patients who were referred to our clinic with radicular pain and neurological signs and symptoms

The authors report 12 cases of osteoid osteoma of the elbow. They emphasize the peculiarity of the clinical, radiographic and histological pictures and discuss the criteria for differential diagnosis with other tumours, pseudotumours and inflammatory lesions of bone. The results obtained are discussed in the light of data emerging from a review of the literature on the subject.

After reminding how difficult it is to reach the diagnosis for an osteoid osteoma of rachis, the Authors report of a patient who was put under their observation after having been treated as lumbar scoliosis and discitis for one year. As they removed the osteoid osteoma, the painful symptomatology punctually disappeared and the rachis, after few months, was in its normal order.

Excision of acetabular osteoid osteoma is technically difficult. We report osteoid osteoma of the quadrilateral plate in a 9-year-old girl who presented to us with persistent nocturnal pain, limp and restricted hip joint movement. The child was investigated with CT scan, MRI and triple-phase bone scan. The 0.7 cm nidus was located in the central portion of the cancellous bone in the quadrilateral plate, 1.94 cm inferior to the triradiate cartilage. The child was operated on through the safe surgical dislocation of the left hip. The location of the lesion was gauged from the preoperative CT sca

Osteoid osteoma is a painful, benign, osteoblastic lesion that occurs in younger patients and affects the extremities or the axial skeleton. While plain film findings may suggest the diagnosis, in complex anatomical regions such as the spine, pelvis, wrist and foot advanced imaging modalities are often required. A typical nidus surrounded by sclerosis or cortical thickening characterizes osteoid osteoma on plain radiography and CT. MR is the cross-sectional imaging modality of choice for most musculoskeletal disorders. Unfortunately, extensive accompanying bone marrow oedema, soft-tissue alter

Intra- or periarticular osteoid osteoma (00) is uncommon, and therefore a diagnostic challenge. Symptoms are: chronic synovitis, decreased range of motion, joint effusion, and joint contracture. Radiographically, the classical perifocal sclerotic margin is often absent, which leads to a significant delay in diagnosis. The authors retrospectively studied 50 cases of intra- and peri-articular OO, treated with percutaneous destruction and alcoholisation. The mean follow-up period was 8.7 years (range, 1 to 15 years). The diagnosis was only made after +/-14 months (range, 8 to 18 months), due to a

Osteoid osteoma rarely develops in the wrist. The symptoms resemble atypical tenosynovitis, with variations according to the location of the tumor. As a result, diagnostic wanderings are common. In addition, the pain may seem related to an injury, as illustrated by two cases reported herein. Conventional investigations often fail to contribute to the diagnosis. The most specific investigation is thin-slice computed tomography (CT), which can be coupled to magnetic resonance imaging. CT typically visualizes a round lucency surrounded by a rim of sclerosis; in addition, CT shows the exact locati

PURPOSE: To present the results of two years experience with a minimally invasive radio-frequency technique designed by our team in the treatment of osteoid osteoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 21 osteoid osteoma patients (15 males, 6 females, age range 13 to 34 yrs) were treated between January 2001 and April 2003. Localizations of the osteoid osteoma were the pelvis (n = 1), the femur (n = 12), the tibia (n = 3), the foot (n = 3), and the humerus (n = 2). All patients underwent an X-ray examination, a CT scan and a bone Scintiscan. In the initial phase, a K-wire just slightly larger t

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a common bone disease, making up 2.6% of all bone tumors and 11% of all benign bone tumors. The typical clinical features include variable pain, often worse at night and markedly responsive to salicylates, and a characteristic roentgenographic appearance of bony sclerosis around a lucent nidus. Although this might suggest an easy diagnosis, diagnosis can often be delayed 1 or 2 years, especially when the lesion is located near a joint. Such a lesion at the upper end of the humerus is rare. In a series of 245 cases Dahlin found only 5 cases out of 18 involving the humeru

A 21-year-old man suffered from diffuse low back pain and sciatica for 10-s periods once or twice a day over a period of 6 months. After this, pain became chronic and was resistant to conventional conservative treatment. Only acetylsalicylic acid diminished pain. Skeletal scintigraphy demonstrated a hot spot at the right side of the fifth lumbar vertebra, and CT scans showed a typical osteoid osteoma in the right pedicle of that vertebra. The time between onset of symptoms and final diagnosis was 18 months. Symptoms disappeared after surgery. Clinical and radiological aspects of the case are d

Osteoid osteomas are common lesions, constituting one-eighth of the benign bone tumors. Their size (less than 1.5 cm) and characteristic radiographic and clinical presentation are usually diagnostic. Response to salicylates is quite variable and not a reliable sign. Extremely high levels of prostaglandin metabolites have been found in osteoid osteomas and may explain the inflammatory features of the lesions. Preoperative localization with computed tomography (CT) scans and intraoperative confirmation of location and resection with radioscintigraphy have dramatically reduced the recurrence rate

INTRODUCTION: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign osteogenic tumor that most commonly affects long bones, accounting for 2-3% of primary bone tumors. Spinal involvement is relatively rare, representing 6-20% of cases, with the lumbar spine being the most frequently affected region. Typical spinal OO presents with painful scoliosis and nocturnal pain relieved by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, atypical presentations may occur when lesions are located adjacent to neural structures, leading to radicular symptoms and poor NSAID response. This case report describes an unusual

Accurate nidus access is essential for treating osteoid osteoma, but the incremental contribution of physical robotic targeting should be distinguished from imaging, definitive treatment, and the wider care pathway. We systematically reviewed peer-reviewed human reports in which a robot physically positioned or constrained an instrument used for biopsy or treatment. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, the Cochrane Library, Wanfang Data and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched from inception through August 2026, without a final language restriction. In the elbow joint, occurrences of intra-articular osteoid osteoma are uncommon. We detail the case of a 21-year-old male who experienced pain, inflammation, and a restricted ability to move his elbow. For a few months, the diagnoses was missed and the patient was treated for idiopathic synovitis. After a contrast MRI, the tumor was revealed. During an arthroscopic examination of the elbow, a distinct red lesion was observed after the removal of the pale reactive bone in the olecranon cavity. This was subsequently removed in its entirety with the aid of a specialized bone tool. Histopathology

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a rare benign tumor of the spine that involves the posterior elements with 75% tumors involving the neural arch. The common presenting symptoms include back pain, deformity like scoliosis, and rarely radiculopathy.
METHODS: From 2011 to 2017, we evaluated cases of OO managed by posterior surgical resection while also reviewing the appropriate literature.
RESULTS: We assessed five patients (three males and two females) averaging 36.60 years of age diagnosed with spinal OOs. Two involved the lumbar posterior elements, two were thoracic, and one was in the C3

OBJECTIVE Surgery has been considered the standard treatment for spinal osteoid osteomas that are refractory to analgesic agents. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a less invasive technique with established efficiency for the treatment of peripheral osteoid osteomas. The main objectives of this study are to evaluate the safety of RFA based on the results of a previous experimental study in rats conducted in the authors' laboratory and to identify its short- and long-term efficiency in the treatment of spinal osteoid osteomas. METHODS Between March 2009 and July 2016, 8 consecutive patients with
