The Value of Patch Testing With Stoma Care Products Among Patients With an Ostomy.

BACKGROUND: Peristomal skin reactions due to irritant exposure are a common complication of ostomies, whereas contact allergy to stoma care products seems rare. However, knowledge is limited and predominantly based on a few case reports. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the prevalence of contact allergy to stoma care products and selected contact allergens. Furthermore, reactions were evaluated in relation to demographic and concomitant dermatitis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patch test results and clinical data was performed among 98 ostomy patients patch-tested with their own stoma

Assessing Risk and Related Complications after Reversal of Combat-Associated Ostomies.

BACKGROUND: During the past decade of conflict, numerous patients with combat-associated injuries required the formation of an ostomy. However, outcomes in those patients undergoing ostomy reversal have yet to be analyzed. We review the experience and identify risk factors for complications after ostomy reversal in a series of patients with combat injuries at our military treatment facility. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of patients with combat-associated injuries managed with a diverting ostomy who underwent ostomy reversal at our military treatment facility during a 13-year period. The Application of a Moldable Skin Barrier in the Self-Care of Elderly Ostomy Patients.

The quality of ostomy directly affects the stoma patient's quality of life. This study investigated the application of a moldable skin barrier in the self-care of elderly stoma patients after colostomy for colorectal cancer. A total of 104 elderly stoma patients (65-79 years) who underwent colostomy because of colorectal cancer were randomly divided into an experimental group (56 cases) receiving a moldable skin barrier and a control group (48 cases) receiving a conventional skin barrier. The information on peristomal irritant dermatitis occurrence, the satisfaction of self-care, and related c

Factors Limiting Ostomy Reversal After Cytoreductive Surgery for Ovarian Cancer: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To investigate the factors related to non-reversal of ostomy after cytoreductive surgery in ovarian cancer. In many women with ovarian cancer, transitory ostomies are performed to limit the consequences of anastomotic leak. Although intended to be temporary, a proportion of these ostomies might never be reversed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with 2014 International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology stage IIB-IVB ovarian cancer requiring a transitory ostomy during primary or secondary cytoreductive surgery at the Bergonie Institute, Fra

Ostomy and Anastomotic Leak Differences Among Rural and Urban Surgical Colon Cancer Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Rural populations experience higher morbidity and mortality after resection of colon cancer (CC) than urban populations. Ostomy creation may obviate or reduce the severity of anastomotic leaks (ALs); however, this practice is surgeon-dependent. Differences in rural-urban ostomy practices and AL following CC resection are unknown. METHODS: We identified patients who underwent CC resection between 2014 and 2019 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database and characterized ostomy practices. We used multivariable logistic regression to evaluate rural-urban
