Oyster shell amendment reduces cadmium and lead availability and uptake by rice in contaminated paddy soil.

Contamination with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in rice and paddy soil threatens food safety and human health. This study determined the effects of oyster shell amendment (0, 6, and 12 g kg-1) on the mobility and uptake of Cd and Pb by two rice plants (ZY18, japonica and DL5, indica) in contaminated paddy soil. Oyster shell amendment significantly increased the pH of soil and pore water, and decreased the DTPA-extractable Cd concentration in soil, but not the Cd concentration in pore water. Furthermore, the DTPA-extractable Pb concentration in rhizosphere soil was not significantly influenced by

A systematic review of post-harvest interventions for Vibrio parahaemolyticus in raw oysters.

BACKGROUND: Non-cholera Vibrio bacteria are a major cause of foodborne illness in the United States. Raw oysters are commonly implicated in gastroenteritis caused by pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In response to outbreaks in 1997-1998, the US Food and Drug Administration developed a nation-wide quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) of V. parahaemolyticus in raw oysters in 2005. The QMRA identified information gaps that new research may address. Incidence of sporadic V. parahaemolyticus illness has recently increased and, as oyster consumption increases and sea temperatures rise, V

Stress response in Cu2+ and Cd2+ exposed oysters (Crassostrea gigas): an immunohistochemical approach.

Localization of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and metallothioneins (MTs) was investigated in a marine bivalve (Crassostrea gigas) by immunohistochemical methods. Differential protein expression was demonstrated in digestive gland, gonad and gills, using a polyclonal antibody against C. gigas proteins. Application of this technique showed the cellular and tissue immunolabelling specificity of the two proteins. HSPs and MTs were localized in the epithelium of the digestive gland and gills in contact with the palleal compartment. For the first time, localization of MTs was observed in mature gametes

Semi-purified Antimicrobial Proteins from Oyster Hemolymph Inhibit Pneumococcal Infection.

Pneumococcal infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, particularly among children. The ability of S. pneumoniae to form enduring biofilms makes treatment inherently difficult, and options are further limited by emerging antibiotic resistance. The discovery of new antibiotics, particularly those with antibiofilm activity, is therefore increasingly important. Antimicrobial proteins and peptides (AMPs) from marine invertebrates are recognised as promising pharmacological leads. This study determined the in vitro antibacterial activity

Desiccation as a mitigation tool to manage biofouling risks: trials on temperate taxa to elucidate factors influencing mortality rates.

The desiccation tolerance of biofouling taxa (adults and early life-stages) was determined under both controlled and 'realistic' field conditions. Adults of the ascidian Ciona spp. died within 24 h. Mortality in the adult blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis occurred within 11 d under controlled conditions, compared with 7 d when held outside. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was the most desiccation-tolerant taxon tested (up to 34 d under controlled conditions). Biofouling orientated to direct sunlight showed faster mortality rates for all the taxa tested. Mortality in Mytilus juveniles

[Vibrio vulnificus: an infrequent cause of septic shock].

Vibrio vulnificus is a lactose positive Gram negative rod that lives in warm seas and can infect wounds and produce sepsis. Its infection is acquired after eating oysters or other filtering marine organisms. We report a 53 years old diabetic male who started with fever after a voyage to Central America. He was admitted febrile, hypotense, dehydrated and polypneic. Painful erythematous lesions and lumps were observed in his upper and lower limbs. After 72 hours of evolution, the lesions became violaceous, with crepitating vesicles full of hemorrhagic exudate. He developed a renal failure and a

Protective effect of Crassostrea gigas extract on audiogenic seizures in magnesium deficient mice.

Audiogenic seizures associated with loss of weight, prostration, piloerection, palpebral ptosis and motor deficiency were induced after sound stimulation of determined frequency and amplitude in magnesium-deficient DBA/2 mice. These symptoms were maintained when standard diet conditions (1700 ppm Mg2+) were restored. In contrast, mice were protected from audiogenic seizure in a dose related manner when Crassostrea gigas extract (JCOE) were added to the diet for 10 consecutive days. Although a rational explanation for this protective effect has not yet been determined, it is assumed that it mig

Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in the tissues of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) carrying principal oyster infectious diseases.

The potential cross-reactivity of the combined Cryptosporidium/Giardia direct immunofluorescence antibodies (IFA) of MERIFLUOR and HYDROFLUOR-COMBO tests was examined against tissues containing known developmental stages of 12 pathogens causing the principal infectious diseases in oysters. Spores of Haplosporidium nelsoni and Haplosporidium costale produced positive acid-fast stain (AFS) reactions similar in intensity to Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. Hexamia nelsoni trophozoites produced positive IFA reactions in both IFA tests; however, the intensity of fluorescence was considerably lower a

A study of steady state and kinetic regulation of chloride ion and osmotic pressure in hemolymph of oysters, Crassostrea virginica, exposed to tri-n-butyltin.

Two sets of experiments were made to determine if bis(tri-n-butyl)tin oxide (TBT) [IUPAC: hexabutyldistannoxane] influenced osmotic pressure or chloride ion concentration in hemolymph of adult American oysters, Crassostrea virginica. In the first set, oysters were acclimated to 5, 25 or 40%;, then exposed to bis(tri-n-butyl)tin oxide dissolved in seawater (0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 micrograms/L) for 11 days. Measurements of the total osmotic pressure and chloride ion concentration in hemolymph indicated that mean values of neither was significantly affected under steady state conditions. Oysters exposed

Expression regulation of Fad and Mboat gene families to cold stress in the noble scallop Chlamys nobilis: A comparative analysis across bivalves.

Cold waves exacerbated by global warming and the resultant sharp drops in coastal water temperature pose serious threats to the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The fatty acid desaturase (Fad) and membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (Mboat) gene families play essential roles in maintaining membrane lipid homeostasis and facilitating cold adaptation. Although Fad genes have been investigated in several bivalves, the role of Mboat genes in cold stress and how these two families coordinately regulate lipid remodeling under cold stress remain largely unclear. This study performed a comprehensiv

How Wastewater Monitoring is Helping to Investigate a Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked to Oysters' Consumption.

In April 2024, two cases of hepatitis A (HA) were linked to the consumption of oysters produced in the same region, which triggered a multidisciplinary study. A network was quickly set up in a one-health approach including epidemiological and clinical data, as well as analysis of locally collected shellfish and wastewater samples. By the end of the outbreak, up to 17 HA cases met the case definition: all shared a same genotype IA strain and have eaten oysters. The prompt response enabled the identification of oyster samples positive for the HAV genome at the start of the monitoring period; the

Sex-Specific Transcriptome Signatures in Pacific Oyster Hemolymph.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Sex determination and differentiation exhibit remarkable molecular diversity across taxa, driven by genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Invertebrates with sequential hermaphroditism, such as the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas), represent a poorly understood system despite their role as keystone species and contribution to a substantial aquaculture industry. METHODS: To identify sex-related molecular markers during gametogenesis, we repeatedly sampled hemolymph from artificially conditioned oysters over two months, and sex phenotypes were assigned at the end

Temporal and spatial characteristics of PAHs in oysters from the Pearl River Estuary, China during 2015-2020.

Estuary connects the inland freshwater and open seawater, which may become a sink for pollutants from land-derived outflows, especially for persistent organic pollutants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs). Due to complex fluctuation in estuary, it's difficult to achieve a comprehensive assessment of the pollution characteristics by grabbed environmental samples. Oysters serve as efficient biomonitors of pollution status in highly dynamic and anthropogenically impacted estuaries, like the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), South China. Here, we investigated the annual, seasonal, and spatial

Evidence of freshwater algal toxins in marine shellfish: Implications for human and aquatic health.

The occurrence of freshwater harmful algal bloom toxins impacting the coastal ocean is an emerging threat, and the potential for invertebrate prey items to concentrate toxin and cause harm to human and wildlife consumers is not yet fully recognized. We examined toxin uptake and release in marine mussels for both particulate and dissolved phases of the hepatotoxin microcystin, produced by the freshwater cyanobacterial genus Microcystis. We also extended our experimental investigation of particulate toxin to include oysters (Crassostrea sp.) grown commercially for aquaculture. California mussels
