[Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in orthopedic indications: a selective review].

A search of Medline concerning the efficacy of shock wave therapy for pseudarthritis (nonunion), calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder, lateral epicondylitis and painful heel identified 25 publications describing 31 investigations. These investigations cannot be accepted as confirmative. The effects in pseudarthritis appear most promising but the cases reported need a reanalysis and thorough description before efficacy can be accepted as granted. Moreover, the indication as well as the stimulus parameters have to be specified and standardized. Published data on the other indications justify pr

Developing and evaluating measurement instruments for intensive and high-acuity care: A practical six-step guide aligned with international measurement standards.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical decisions in intensive care, emergency, and high-dependency settings depend on defensible measurement of patient outcomes, care processes, and staff and family experiences. Systematic reviews have found that most outcome instruments used in acute care and survivorship research lack adequate evidence for key measurement properties, limiting confidence in research synthesis and clinical translation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide a practical, six-step guide for developing and evaluating health measurement instruments for intensive and high-acuity care, b

A Systematic Process for Assessing Fitness-for-Purpose of Health Outcomes for Computable Phenotyping With Electronic Health Record Data.

PURPOSE: Information from electronic health records (EHRs) may be incorporated into computable phenotype algorithms in efforts to overcome inaccuracies of algorithms based on administrative claims data alone. However, such efforts can be resource-intensive and unsuccessful. Assessing the feasibility of computable phenotyping for a health outcome of interest (HOI) before proceeding is therefore recommended. METHODS: We developed a systematic fitness-for-purpose (FFP) assessment process to implement concepts outlined in a previously described general framework for computable phenotyping incorpo

Mental health outcomes in health care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic: an umbrella review.

As we head into the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increasing need to consider the long-term mental health outcomes of health care workers (HCWs) who have experienced overwhelming work pressure, economic and social deprivation, burnout, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This scoping umbrella review summarizes the mental health outcomes of published evidence syntheses on HCWs worldwide. We analyzed 39 evidence syntheses representing the findings from 1297 primary studies. We found several persistent fears and concerns (job-related fears, fear of stigmatization, worrie

The impact of nursing on health outcomes of people receiving medication for opioid use disorder: An integrative review.

INTRODUCTION: This integrative review aimed to understand the impact of nursing on the health outcomes of people with opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) integrative review methodology guided the review process. The authors searched PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and OVID databases for peer-reviewed, English language articles describing nursing care for people receiving medications for OUD. The literature search followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RES

Assessment of the reporting of quality and outcome measures in hepatic resections: a call for 90-day reporting in all hepatectomy series.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to assess the current state of quality and outcomes measures being reported for hepatic resections in the recent literature. METHODS: Medline and PubMed databases were searched for English language articles published between 1 January 2002 and 30 April 2013. Two examiners reviewed each article and relevant citations for appropriateness of inclusion, which excluded papers of liver donor hepatic resections, repeat hepatectomies or meta-analyses. Data were extracted and summarized by two examiners for analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-five studies were identified wit

Tracking Responses to Items in Measures as a Means of Increasing Therapeutic Engagement in Clients: A Complementary Clinical Approach to Tracking Outcomes.

UNLABELLED: This article presents a novel clinical application of questionnaire feedback, which focuses on change at the individual question level rather than the total mean or clinical score level. We term the approach 'Tracking Responses to Items in Measures' (TRIM) and promote the key aims to be (1) providing both client and practitioner with feedback on areas of positive change that may be masked by numerical feedback, (2) reinforcing client strengths and self-efficacy, (3) exploring potential extra-therapeutic factors that may contribute to the lack of change or deterioration on individua

Sexual health interventions: a meta-analysis.

In the second of two companion papers, we conducted a meta-analysis of sexual health interventions in three domains. The interventions chosen for the meta-analysis were a subset of studies presented in a narrative review (the first of the two companion papers); these in turn were selected on the basis of fit to principles derived from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other definitions of sexual health. Studies (n=20) were drawn from Medline and PsycINFO databases (English language, adult populations, 1996-2011) and fell into three domains: knowledge, attitudes, and sexual behaviors. We
