[Overweight and risk of breast tumor in Italy].

Direct association between obesity and total mortality, has been already established for some cancers especially in women. Data from a large case-control study (2,569 cases and 2,588 controls) carried out in 1991-94 in six Italian areas, were used to estimate postmenopausal breast cancer risk, according to body mass index (BMI) and age. Risk seemed to increase from the sixth (odds ratio for BMI > or = 30.0 vs. BMI < 21.7 = 1.0) to the eighth decade (odds ratio = 2.7) of life. Percentages of obesity in Italy by age and geographical area are shown (ISTAT data--Household Multipurpose Survey 1990-

Overweight trajectories and psychosocial adjustment among adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have investigated overweight trajectories and psychosocial adjustment among adolescents. We conducted analyses with data from the multisite Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD). METHODS: The sample included 1350 youths born in 1991. Data consisted of repeated measures of weight, height, and multiple subscales of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) from age 9 to age 15. RESULTS: Three trajectory patterns were identified: never/rarely overweight/obese (59.5%), late start/light overweight

Modestly overweight women have vascular endothelial dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Vascular endothelial dysfunction occurs early in the atherosclerotic process and is predictive of cardiovascular prognosis. However, the association between specific cardiovascular risk factors and endothelial dysfunction in women has not been well characterized. This study examined the relationship between endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular risk factors (body mass index [BMI] >or= 25 kg/m(2), current smoking, age, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and family history of early coronary heart disease) in a population of women that included those already being trea

Overweight, obesity, youth, and health-risk behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and severity of obesity have increased among children and adolescents. Although the medical and psychosocial consequences of youth obesity have been well documented, comparatively less information exists on the association of overweight/obesity with health-risk behaviors, which are considered to be a primary threat to adolescent health. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the association of overweight and obesity with health-risk behaviors among U.S. youth. METHODS: Self-reported height and weight, substance use, violence, and bullying were assessed in a nationally

Overweight in infancy: which pre- and perinatal factors determine overweight persistence or reduction? A birth cohort followed for 11 years.

BACKGROUND: A considerable proportion of children with early-life overweight attain a normal weight. To recognize infants at risk of persistent overweight, we compared early-life factors of children with a longitudinal pattern of persistent overweight to children with a pattern of overweight in early but not in later childhood. METHODS: In 3,550 children participating in a birth cohort that started in 1996/1997 in the Netherlands, body mass index was repeatedly assessed until age 11 and dichotomized into with/without overweight. Latent class growth modeling was used to distinguish trajectorie

Overweight and obesity in youth with type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: Overweight and obesity are highly prevalent in the general population but remain understudied in pediatric type 1 diabetes (T1D). We aimed to estimate the incidence and identify associated factors for developing elevated BMI in a contemporary, real-world cohort of racially diverse lean youth with new-onset T1D. METHODS: We reviewed medical records from 1,394 youth who were lean (BMI <85th percentile) at the onset of T1D between 2012 and 2024 (excluding those with thyroid or celiac diseases at any time), used BMI trajectory to stratify into mutually exclusive categories (stayed lea

Obesity and Overweight-Practical Management for Indian Setting.

Overweight and obesity are showing an alarmingly increased prevalence around the world. The increase in prevalence is seen across all ages. NFHS-5 data has demonstrated a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among both children and adults in India with a proportionate increase in the risk for metabolic complications. Presence of overweight and obesity has been associated with several metabolic dysfunctions including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardio-metabolic disorders, and menstrual & fertility disorders. Children whose BMI is high in childhood demonstrate features

Trends and Disparities in Clinician Diagnosis of Overweight and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: While obesity is a highly visible condition, adiposity often goes undetected by individuals and community members, especially as larger body sizes become more common and recalibrate expectations. However, there are no contemporary data about such underdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in clinician diagnoses of overweight or obesity by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic disadvantage. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Noninstitutionalized adults age 20 or older who responded to the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). MAIN

Coadministered Cagrilintide and Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Semaglutide at a dose of 2.4 mg has established weight-loss and cardiovascular benefits, and cagrilintide at a dose of 2.4 mg has shown promising results in early-phase trials; the efficacy of the combination (known as CagriSema) on weight loss in persons with either overweight and coexisting conditions or obesity is unknown. METHODS: In a phase 3a, 68-week, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled and active-controlled trial, we enrolled adults without diabetes who had a body-mass index (BMI; the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) of 30 or hig

Association of overweight with treatment outcomes in pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: While overweight has been associated with a reduced risk of developing tuberculosis and diabetes with an increased risk, it remains unclear how these conditions influence anti-tuberculosis treatment outcomes. We aimed to examine the association of overweight with anti-tuberculosis treatment outcomes, and to evaluate whether this association differs by diabetes status, using two Korean cohorts. METHODS: Among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis enrolled in the multicenter prospective cohort study of pulmonary tuberculosis (COSMOTB) and the Korea Tuberculosis Cohort (KTBC) registry

Percentage of overweight is overestimated in children of short stature.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased, not just in adults but also in children. In Japan, the percentage of overweight (POW) is widely used for the estimation and assessment of percentage body fat (PBF) for children. We examine whether there is a difference between normal height and short stature children in terms of the relationship between POW and PBF. METHODS: A total of 321 children of normal height (163 boys, 158 girls) and 106 children with short stature (78 boys, 28 girls) were assessed according to sex. Percentage of overweight was used to represent the de

Effect of Overweight and Obesity on Periodontal Treatment Intensity.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is associated with greater utilization of medical resources, but it is unclear if a similar relationship exists for dental care. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cohort study compared periodontal disease treatment among obese, overweight, and normal-weight patients attending an urban US dental school clinic. METHODS: Periodontal, demographic, and medical history data for 3,443 adult patients examined between July 1, 2010, and July 31, 2019, were extracted from electronic health records. Body mass index (BMI) was computed from self-reported height and weight and categorize
