The effect of eight doses of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 UI of vitamin D2 administered every other day to three groups of rats, on the activities of some enzymes in the animals' liver was evaluated. In general terms, findings revealed a decrease in the activities of glucose-6-phosphatase, phosphorylase and arginase. Likewise, an increase of the activities of maltase and of glutamic oxaloacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminases was observed. Furthermore, the activities of cholinesterase and alpha-amylase also varied depending on the vitamin D2 doses administered.

A Caucasian male developed florid dermatomyositis documented by serum enzyme elevation, electromyography, and histology of skin and muscle. Serum enzymes, including creatine phosphokinase (CPK), aldolase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), decreased initially during high dose systemic corticosteroid therapy, although profound muscle weakness persisted. Subsequent elevation of serum LDH and SGOT levels during treatment provided a clue to underlying neoplasia. Primary hepatoma with widespread metastases was found at necropsy.

The alcoholic extract of stem of Indigofera aspalathoides was evaluated for its antihepatotoxic activity against CCl(4)-induced hepatic damage in rats. The activity was evaluated by using biochemical parameters, such as serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin and gama glutamate transpeptidase (GGTP). The histopathological changes of liver sample were compared with respective control. The extract showed remarkable hepatoprotective effect.

Despite the widespread use of isoniazid, suicidal ingestion is rare. Two patients are presented who ingested 5 gm and 12 gm respectively, both having seizures within two hours and severe metabolic adisosis. They were treated successfully with intravenous administration of diazepam and bicarbonate, and forced diuresis. Both patients showed a mild rise in levels of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and lactic acid dehydrogenase. Physicians should be alerted to the possibility of isoniazid ingestion in patients with an unexplained severe metabolic acidosis and seizures.

We studied the effect of 1-beta-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-traizole-3-carboxamide (ribavirin) on 66 patients with acute viral hepatitis, by a double-blind study. Thirty-three of these patients received the active drug and the other 33 received a placebo. The effect of ribavirin was evaluated by the clinical picture and by the changes in both direct and total serum bilirubin and in the activity of serum glutamic-pyruvic and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminases. Eighty cases of infectious mononucleosis have been investigated by serum enzyme studies and other liver function tests. Maximum abnormalities occurred between the second and fourth weeks of illness and all tests were usually normal by the sixth week. Serum isocitric dehydrogenase activity was increased in 93% of cases and serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase in 74%. Conventional liver function tests were less sensitive. Serum bilirubin was above normal in 40% of cases; in 17% of cases the increase was sufficient to show as clinical jaundice. No patient has developed chronic hepatitis.
