Outbreaks of Vibrio parahaemolyticus gastroenteritis in the United States (Texas, New York and Pacific Northwest) in 1997-98 emphasized the need to develop molecular methods for identification and differentiation of these organisms. Variations in cancer incidence among whites in 1973-77 in 8 geographic areas of the Pacific Basin were compared. Substantial differences were found for the occurrences of lung cancer, cancer of the corpus uteri, and malignant melanoma. Blastomycosis, a fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis, was once thought to be endemic only to the Central and Great Lakes regions of the United States of America. We present the first reported case series of patients documenting the diagnosis of blastomycosis in the Pacific region. In both cases, exposure to endemic areas was retrospectively identified.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcusgattii infections are being reported in the United States (US) with increasing frequency. Initially, US reports were primarily associated with an ongoing C. gattii outbreak in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) states of Washington and Oregon, starting in 2004. BACKGROUND: Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) have increased cancer risk, which may differ across racial groups. Cancer risk among Asian American and Pacific Islander SOTRs is ill-defined.
