The relationship of bottle feeding and other sucking behaviors with speech disorder in Patagonian preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that children's nonnutritive sucking habits may lead to delayed development of their oral anatomy and functioning. However, these findings were inconsistent. We investigated associations between use of bottles, pacifiers, and other sucking behaviors with speech disorders in children attending three preschools in Punta Arenas (Patagonia), Chile. METHODS: Information on infant feeding and sucking behaviors, age starting and stopping breast- and bottle-feeding, pacifier use, and other sucking behaviors, was collected from self-administered questionnaires c

Outbreak of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica sepsis with meningitis in a well-baby nursery.

Between March and May 2012, three neonates born at a regional maternity hospital developed Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (previously Chryseobacterium meningosepticum) sepsis with meningitis aged <10 days, and were treated successfully with intravenous ciprofloxacin plus vancomycin or piperacillin-tazobactam for three to six weeks. Four (16.6%) of 24 environmental specimens obtained from the nursery and delivery room were positive for this organism. All of the clinical isolates and two isolates from storage boxes for pacifiers and pacifier covers were genetically identical. After changing the

Oral candidal flora in healthy infants.

Asymptomatic oral candidal carriage has been extensively studied in adults, but only rarely in infants. The present investigation aimed to determine the asymptomatic oral carriage of candidal species in healthy infants and its relationship to age, sex, feeding pattern and use of a pacifier. The swab technique was used for oral candidal isolation. Candidal species were isolated from 48% of the infants without a significant relationship to age, gender or between breast-fed or bottle-fed infants. Similarly, a history of maternal vaginal candidosis, or presence of nappy rash, had no significant re

Case Report of Changes in Breastfeeding and Alcohol Consumption During the First 6 Months.

This longitudinal case report describes a mother-infant dyad, focusing on how early pacifier use, scheduled feeding, and postpartum alcohol resumption affected breastfeeding behavior and infant growth. Pacifier use and scheduled feeding decreased breast stimulation and suckling frequency. Alcohol resumption at 3 weeks, initiation of pumping at 7 weeks, and increased consumption, coinciding with menses, likely accelerated an existing decline in milk supply and suboptimal infant weight gain. These challenges required formula supplementation and metoclopramide. Alcohol use paused at 17 weeks duri

[Multi-caries in the young child].

This article describes the clinical and therapeutic aspects of multi-caries in young children. These rampant cervical caries usually begin with the eruption of the first teeth. Two typical cases are presented in which the prolonged use of nursing bottle at bedtime and the use of pacifiers dipped into honey are responsible for the development of multi-caries. Although such patient can be treated successfully, efforts should be made to promote preventive measures and parents education.
