An investigation of the digital nerves of the thumb.

With the use of a stereoscopic microscope, observations were made on the course of the proper digital nerve of the thumb on ten upper limbs in adult cadavers. By observation from the dorsal side after removal of the bone, it was possible to clearly see the ramification of the digital nerve from the subcutaneous tissue to the dermis. Ramification from the palm to the level of the interphalangeal joint was segmental. The digital nerve of the thumb trifurcates from the proximal site of the distal palmar thumb crease into the main, medial, and lateral branches. The main branch is thick and extends

Physiological characteristics of responses of wide dynamic range spinal neurones to cutaneously applied vibration in the cat.

Extracellular single-unit recordings were made from wide dynamic range neurones in the lumbar dorsal horn of anaesthetized or decerebrated cats. Vibration applied to the skin at a frequency of 80 Hz could evoke 3 distinct types of response--excitation, depression or a biphasic response consisting of excitation followed by depression. By applying vibration at different sites, a given neurone was found to show more than one type of response. Parametric studies of the depressant and biphasic responses were made because previous studies indicated that adenosine mediates the depression in these typ

Distribution of the neurotrophin receptors p75 and trkB in peripheral mechanoreceptors; observations on changes after injury.

The neurotrophin family mediates effects of growth, cell differentiation and cell death through low- and high-affinity transmembrane receptors. The Pacinian corpuscle (PC) is the largest peripheral mechanoreceptor in mammals and was studied by immuno-histochemistry and immuno-electron microscopy with regard to the distribution of neurotrophin receptors, p75; p140 trkA, p145 trkB and 145 trkC. TrkA- and trkC-like immunoreactivity (IR) was not expressed in rat and cat PCs. Developing and adult animals expressed p75 and trkB in lamellar cells of the PC. The inner core cells, thought to be special

[Effect of stimulation of splanchnic mechanoreceptors on the activity of purkinje cells (author's transl)].

Climbing and mossy fibre activity in Purkinje cells of cat cerebellum (vermis part of lobules V and VI) were recorded by means of extracellular microelectrodes. Responses were obtained by stimulation of different types of mechanoreceptors in the gastro-intestinal tract: muscular receptors connected with C fibres, peritoneal movement receptors connected with A gamma delta or B fibres, Pacinian corpuscules connected with A beta fivres. The characteristics of the splanchnic fibre projections on this cerebellar area were defined. Splanchno-somatic, splanchno-visceral, and splanchno-cortical conver

A study of mechanoreceptors in fibrocartilage masses in the defect of pars interarticularis.

We investigated the origin of low back pain associated with lumbar spondylolysis and spondylolytic spondylolisthesis by removing fibrocartilage masses from the lytic sites in symptomatic patients and staining the masses by the Gairns gold chloride method to examine mechanoreceptors. The fibrocartilage masses were found to contain four types of mechanoreceptors: Pacinian corpuscles, Ruffini receptors, Golgi tendon organ-like receptors, and free nerve endings. All of these mechanoreceptors were present at the periphery of the specimens, and Ruffini receptors and free nerve endings were abundant.

Neural elements in the cruciate ligaments and menisci of the knee joint of the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis.

Knee joints from adult, juvenile, hatchling, and embryonic (full term) American alligators were dissected to reveal the cruciate ligaments and the medial and lateral menisci. Two anterior cruciate (major and minor), a posterior cruciate, an intermeniscal, and a meniscofemoral ligament were identified. In addition, we found a fourth internal ligament which has not been reported previously. Menisci and ligaments from left knees were fixed in formalin and processed for routine histological observation. Those from right knees were stained in bulk by using a gold chloride method and were either fro

Intradural Intramedullary Teratoma Presenting in the Lumbar Spine: Report of a Rare Case.

BACKGROUND: Intradural teratomas are an exceedingly unusual phenomenon. They are tumors with the cellular constituent source of all the 3 germ cell layers. CASE DESCRIPTION: We here report a case of an 18-year-old man with special pathologic features. There was no history of spinal dysraphism, congenital spinal abnormalities, previous spinal surgery, or lumbar puncture. Lumbosacral spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-delineated, intramedullary mass at the L2-3 level. Histopathology examination of the resected tumor revealed cystic spaces lined with simple columnar epithelium as w

Fine structural alterations of the palmar aponeurosis in Dupuytren's contracture. A combined scanning and transmission electronmicroscopic examination.

The authors examined the fine structural alterations of palmar aponeurosis in Dupuytren's contracture. Two types of the fibroblasts can be identified: classic fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. In the Dupuytren's tissue one fourth of all non-inflammatory cells were regarded as myofibroblasts. In the Dupuytren's aponeurosis the orientation of the thin and thick collagen fibers varied. The Paccini corpuscles were hypertrophised and around them compact collagen tissue was increased.

Telocytes in the Normal and Pathological Peripheral Nervous System.

We studied telocytes/CD34+ stromal cells in the normal and pathological peripheral nervous system (PNS), for which we reviewed the literature and contributed our observations under light and electron microscopy in this field. We consider the following aspects: (A) general characteristics of telocytes and the terminology used for these cells (e.g., endoneurial stromal cells) in PNS; (B) the presence, characteristics and arrangement of telocytes in the normal PNS, including (i) nerve epi-perineurium and endoneurium (e.g., telopodes extending into the endoneurial space); (ii) sensory nerve ending

Mechanoreceptors in the Anterior Horn of the Equine Medial Meniscus: an Immunohistochemical Approach.

Lameness due to stifle and especially meniscal lesions is frequent in equine species. In humans, mechanoreceptors involved in proprioceptive function are well studied. Given the high incidence of meniscal injuries in horses, and the lack of information concerning them in equine menisci, our objective was to study these corpuscles in six healthy anterior horns of the equine medial meniscus, which is the most common localisation reported for equine meniscal injuries. Immunohistochemical stainings were performed using antibodies against high molecular weight neurofilaments and glial fibrillary ac

Structure and barrier functions of the perineurium and its relationship with associated sensory corpuscles: A review.

Peripheral nerves are provided with a blood-nerve barrier which prevents the invasion of harmful substances and pathogens, and also regulates metabolic and ionic homeostasis within nerve fascicles. The barrier functions are attributed to both the concentric layer of flattened cells in the perineurium and blood vessels running in the endoneurium. The perineurial cells develop continuous tight junctions as a diffusion barrier. In order to take up a predominant nutrient, glucose, the perineurium as well as endoneurial capillaries expresses GLUT1, a glucose transporter. An axon-Schwann cell comple

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: clinical characteristics, conventional electrophysiology and quantitative sensory testing.

OBJECTIVE: Workers exposed to vibrating tools may develop hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). We assessed the somatosensory phenotype using quantitative sensory testing (QST) in comparison to electrophysiology to characterize (1) the most sensitive QST parameter for detecting sensory loss, (2) the correlation of QST and electrophysiology, and (3) the frequency of a carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in HAVS. METHODS: QST, cold provocation tests, fine motor skills, and median nerve neurography were used. QST included thermal and mechanical detection and pain thresholds. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients

Reduction of TMD pain by high-frequency vibration: a spatial and temporal analysis.

Under some conditions, vibration delivered to the skin can reduce pain (vibratory analgesia). Previous studies of this phenomenon in a clinical context have been somewhat variable in terms of stimulus control, and have not examined the way in which the spatial distribution of pain is affected. In the present study, we used rigorously controlled conditions to examine vibratory analgesia in participants (N=17) with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Results of 20- and 100-Hz vibration were compared with data from a no-vibration control condition. The results document for the first time t

Innervation of nociceptors in the menisci of the knee joint: an immunohistochemical study.

Using histology, we studied the innervation of nociceptors in the medial and lateral menisci of the knee joint. Specimens examined were taken from 16 patients during arthroplasty. The patients were 6 men and 10 women, with ages ranging from 14 to 76 years (mean 56 years). Immunohistochemistry with the unlabeled antibody biotin-streptavidin method was employed to detect protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) or substance P (SP) in the specimen. The antibody for PGP 9.5 detected nerve tissues in the menisci. Most but not all of the nerve fibers were associated with blood vessels. Nerve fibers and se

Mechanoreceptors in articular tissues.

The morphology, distribution, and function of mechanoreceptors in joint capsules, ligaments, knee-joint menisci, and articular disks of the temporomandibular joints of animals, including humans, have been reviewed. In addition to free nerve endings, three types of joint receptors are present in most animal joints: 1) a Ruffini-like receptor situated in the capsule, 2) a Golgi tendon organ situated in a ligament; and 3) the encapsulated Pacinian-like corpuscle. In the anterior cruciate ligament, nerve fibers enter from the subsynovial connective tissue and terminate in receptors. Most of the re

Two-point discrimination of vibratory perception on the sole of the human foot.

The capability for discrimination of vibratory stimuli of the sole of the foot was tested on 12 subjects (6 men, 6 women). Two vibratory stimuli (sinusoidal impulse: frequency, 200 Hz; amplitude, 0.1 mm; duration, 2 sec) were applied at different sites to the sole of the foot. Subjects were asked whether they detected one or two vibratory sensations. The discrimination threshold was defined as the shortest distance at which two vibrations can be differentiated at repeated trials. In addition, the absolute threshold was measured by one plunger (sinusoidal vibration: frequency, 200 Hz; variable
