This research examined the effectiveness of a theory-based educational intervention on colorectal cancer-related preventive nutritional behaviors among a sample of organizational staff. METHODS: In this interventional study, 110 employees of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences were randomly divided into two groups (intervention and control) with cluster sampling. The data gathering tool was a researche

Parental knowledge of radiation exposure in medical imaging used in the pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to quantify the knowledge base among parents and legal guardians presenting to our pediatric emergency department regarding radiation exposure during medical imaging and potential risks to children resulting from ionizing radiation. We sought to examine if a child's previous exposure to medical imaging changed caregiver knowledge base and discern caregivers' preference for future education on this topic. METHODS: A prospective convenience sample survey was performed of caregivers who presented with their child to our tertiary pediatric emergency department. Parents or le

Analysis of intraocular lens packaging weight and waste.

PURPOSE: To analyze waste from intraocular lens (IOL) packaging across a variety of brands. SETTING: Private clinical practice. DESIGN: Prospective weight and composition analysis of all elements of unopened packages of IOLs sold in the United States-both preloaded and non-preloaded. METHODS: Samples were collected from multiple IOL companies in 2023. The primary end point for comparison was the total weight of each IOL package, because this generally correlates with the carbon footprint. The percentage of total weight contributed by paper, plastic, Tyvek, foil, sterile saline solution (flu

Comparison of the efficacy of educational materials for chronic kidney disease during outpatient waiting time.

AIM: Patient education is crucial for preventing chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, but adequate educational time is not always available in standard nephrology outpatient clinics. However, usefulness of educational materials provided by healthcare providers in educational settings has been reported. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of pamphlet and video materials in increasing CKD knowledge at a nephrology clinic using waiting time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 44 CKD stage 3 - 5 patients were randomly assigned to either pamphlet or video education group, receiving a single session

Perceptions of Dysphagia Evaluation and Treatment Among Individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Dysphagia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). The primary objectives of the present study were to explore patients' narrative reports focused on what information and evaluation and treatment experiences they identified as they manage dysphagia, and to identify practice patterns relevant to dysphagia management. A secondary objective was to produce an educational resource for this population that addressed their questions about dysphagia. A sample of individuals with oropharyngeal dysphagia secondary to PD (n = 25) across all regions of

Starting a Prehospital Medication for Opioid Use Disorder Program.

BACKGROUND: Over 2.7 million people have an opioid use disorder (OUD). Opioid-related deaths have steadily increased over the last decade. Although emergency department (ED)-based medication for OUD (MOUD) has been successful in initiating treatment for patients, there still is a need for improved access. This study describes the development of a prehospital MOUD program. METHODS: An interdisciplinary team expanded a MOUD program into the prehospital setting through the local city fire department Quick Response Team (QRT) to identify patients appropriate for MOUD treatment. The QRT consisted

Yoga and Aerobic Dance for Pain Management in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is one of the most common types of arthritis among children. According to JIA guidelines for physical activity (PA), structured PA interventions led to improved health outcomes. However, many PA programs, such as yoga and aerobic dance, have not been studied in this population despite being popular among youth. Web-based PA programs could provide patients with accessible and affordable interventions. OBJECTIVE: The primary aims of the proposed pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) are to examine (1) the feasibility of conducting a full-scale R

Balloon mania: news in the air.

The hot-air balloon, invented by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783, enabled the French King to project his glory, the nobility to exhibit their valor, the literary public to transmit the ideal of the Enlightenment and the plebian public to rejoice in a scientific spectacle. The ensuing balloon mania helped create an integrated public that, because of its size and composition, can only be described as 'democratic' just a few years before the French Revolution. The monumental impact of the balloon was well represented in a flood of poetry, pamphlets, books, journal reports, academic papers and co

Britain's Siberia: Mary Coutts's account of the asylum system.

This paper examines a pamphlet entitled Britain's Siberia. The High Statistics of Insanity Explained by a Certified Lunatic. Research has revealed that the writer was Mary Coutts and that she had been a detained patient in the Aberdeen Royal Asylum. The paper analyses what Coutts had to say about her experiences and compares this to the official asylum records and what they reveal about her inmate stay. The paper also relates Coutts' account to that of other patients who have written about their experiences. As one of the few women to have left a record of life in the asylum, Coutts' story is

METHODS: A 22-question online survey explored postsecondary students' current knowledge and education regarding concussions. RESULTS: Findings indicated that sex differences emerged with concussion knowledge and
