Taxifolin (dihydroquercetin), which has various pharmacological functions, is contained in edible plants. Some taxifolin-containing foodstuffs such as adzuki bean and sorghum seeds are cooked by themselves and with other starch-containing ingredients. (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is unstable and degraded in near-neutral or alkaline fluids. To overcome its limitation, EGCG nanoliposome (EN) was prepared by an ethanol injection method combined with dynamic high-pressure microfluidization. EN possessed good physicochemical characterizations (high entrapment efficiency=92.1%, small average particle size=71.7nm, low polydispersity index=0.286 and zeta potential=-10.81mv). EN exhibited a relative good sustained release property. Stability of EGCG in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) was significantly improved by nanoliposome encapsulation.

Porcine pancreastatin (1.19 nmol) was administered into the peripheral vein (i.v.) or the third cerebral ventricle (i.t.v.) of dogs and its effect on the secretion of insulin and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) studied. Neither means of administration had any effect on basal and glucose-induced insulin or PP secretion. However, i.v. pancreastatin did inhibit the i.v. CCK-8-induced insulin but not PP release. Pancreastatin may thus play a role in the regulation of insulin secretion in the canine pancreas.

An epidemic of fibrosing colonopathy, a new disease caused by the prolonged administration of excessive doses of pancreatic enzymes, was first reported in 1994. A variety of intestinal complications, including constipation, abdominal pain, palpable cecal masses, intestinal obstruction, intussusception, and volvulus, have been observed beyond the neonatal period in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). In a double-blind, randomized crossover study, the hypotheses were tested that more powerful inhibition of gastric acid secretion by adjuvant omeprazole further improves the efficacy of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy compared to adjuvant cimetidine and that excluding the influence of pH-related factors, by virtually complete inhibition of gastric acid secretion with 60 mg omeprazole daily, does not lead to total elimination of steatorrhea. During both adjuvant cimetidine and omeprazole treatment, fecal fat excretion was significantly lower compared to pancreatin monotherapy (P < 0.01).
