Phytoremediation potential of three terrestrial plant species for removal of atrazine, azoxystrobin, and imidacloprid.

Pesticides can move off-target resulting in contamination of sensitive water bodies and causing adverse effects on inhabiting species. Through best management practices, such as the implementation of vegetative buffer strips, off-target movement of pesticides can be decreased, and compound degradation can be increased via phytoremediation. In this study, blueflag iris (Iris versicolor), broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) were planted in soil treated with one of three commonly used pesticides. At 28, 56 and 112 days after treatment (DAT), plants were destructi

A cross-sectional observational study investigating the association between sedges (swamp grasses, Cyperaceae) and the prevalence of immature malaria vectors in aquatic habitats along the shore of Lake Victoria, western Kenya.

Background: Strategies that involve manipulations of the odour-orientation of gravid malaria vectors could lead to novel attract-and-kill interventions. Recent work has highlighted the potential involvement of graminoid plants in luring vectors to oviposition sites. This study aimed to analyse the association between water-indicating graminoid plants (Cyperaceae, sedges), other abiotic and biotic factors and the presence and abundance of early instar Anopheles larvae in aquatic habitats as a proxy indicator for oviposition. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 110 aquatic habitats along the sh

Dietary analysis in symptomatic patients with coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet: the role of trace amounts of gluten and non-gluten food intolerances.

BACKGROUND: Whereas many people with coeliac disease (CD) are asymptomatic when consuming a gluten-free diet (GFD), a proportion continues to experience symptoms. The reasons for this are unclear. METHODS: Thirty-nine adult members of The Coeliac Society of New South Wales, all of whom had persistent gastrointestinal symptoms despite adhering to a GFD, were evaluated. Dietary analysis indicated that 22 (56%) were consuming a GFD as defined by the WHO/FAO Codex Alimentarius (Codex-GFD), in which foods containing up to 0.3% of protein from gluten-containing grains can be labelled as 'gluten fre

Seed shattering habit in millets and the secrets of the abscission layer - a comprehensive review.

Though seed shattering continues to be a significant barrier affecting yield stability and harvesting efficiency in millets and other grasses, millets are increasingly acknowledged as climate-resilient, nutrient-rich 2007cereal crops with the potential to strengthen global nutritional and food security under the combined pressures of climate change, population growth, and limited natural resources. Since strong artificial selection favoured non-shattering phenotypes during domestication, seed shattering, an adaptive trait in wild species that promotes seed dispersal through the formation and a

Exploring the rhizospheric bacterial community of selected millets for plant growth promotion activity in tomato.

Millets are highly nutritious crops mostly cultivated in xeric regions of Asia and Africa. The specific agro-climatic characteristics of millets enable the rhizosphere to host diverse microorganisms that assist in the crop's progression under harsh weather conditions. This research work intends to evaluate the plant growth-promoting (PGP) potential of the rhizospheric microbes isolated from the soil of Panicum sumatrense and Eleusine coracana from Kunnanchala and Varagampadi, residing areas of Irulas Tribal Community located in the Attapadi Hills of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, respectively. Stage-Specific Defense Reprogramming in Proso Millet Against Head Smut: Insights from Time-Series Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Integration.

Smut disease is a major constraint on proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) production. Our previous metabolomic work in the cultivar 'Chishu 13' outlined a two-stage defense strategy involving energy metabolism at jointing and phenylpropanoid activation at heading, yet the transcriptional regulation underlying this metabolic shift remained unknown. In this follow-up study, we performed RNA-seq on the same biological samples used in our prior metabolomics analysis to directly link transcriptomic changes to metabolic outcomes. We compared asymptomatic inoculated (IA) and symptomatic inoculated (I

Wetlands as principal zones of methylmercury production in southern Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico region.

It is widely recognized that wetlands, especially those rich in organic matter and receiving appreciable atmospheric mercury (Hg) inputs, are important sites of methylmercury (MeHg) production. Extensive wetlands in the southeastern United States have many ecosystem attributes ideal for promoting high MeHg production rates; however, relatively few mercury cycling studies have been conducted in these environments. We conducted a landscape scale study examining Hg cycling in coastal Louisiana (USA) including four field trips conducted between August 2003 and May 2005. Sites were chosen to repres

Comparative genomic analysis of the R2R3 MYB secondary cell wall regulators of Arabidopsis, poplar, rice, maize, and switchgrass.

BackgroundR2R3 MYB proteins constitute one of the largest plant transcription factor clades and regulate diverse plant-specific processes. Several R2R3 MYB proteins act as regulators of secondary cell wall (SCW) biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana (At), a dicotyledenous plant. Relatively few studies have examined SCW R2R3 MYB function in grasses, which may have diverged from dicots in terms of SCW regulatory mechanisms, as they have in cell wall composition and patterning. Understanding cell wall regulation is especially important for improving lignocellulosic bioenergy crops, such as switchg

Biosolids-amended soils: Part I. Effect of biosolids application on soil quality and ecotoxicity.

Investigations of potential risk from biosolids generally indicate that land application does not threaten human or ecosystem health, but questions continue to arise concerning the environmental effects of this practice. This research project was initiated to evaluate ecotoxicity resulting from the amendment of soils with biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Toxicity was evaluated using standard tests, including earthworm mortality, growth, and reproduction; seedling germination and root elongation; microbial respiration; and nematode mortality and reproduction. Flavonoids extracted from fonio millet (Digitaria exilis) reveal potent antithyroid properties.

Digitaria exilis (fonio) is a tiny variety of millet commonly eaten by inhabitants of semiarid regions. A sample of fonio collected right in the middle of a severely iodine-depleted goitrous endemic was submitted to phytochemical investigations in order to assess the potential contributory roles played by vegetable molecules to the goitrogenic processes. The total content of flavonoids amounts to 500 mg/kg of the edible whole cereal grains. Their extraction and identification fail to detect the C-glycosylflavones described in other millet varieties but point out the presence of apigenin (A = 1

Grass-like plants release general volatile cues attractive for gravid Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the ecology and behaviour of disease vectors, including the olfactory cues used to orient and select hosts and egg-laying sites, are essential for the development of novel, insecticide-free control tools. Selected graminoid plants have been shown to release volatile chemicals attracting malaria vectors; however, whether the attraction is selective to individual plants or more general across genera and families is still unclear. METHODS: To contribute to the current evidence, we implemented bioassays in two-port airflow olfactometers and in large field cages with four

Effects of dietary Korean proso-millet protein on plasma adiponectin, HDL cholesterol, insulin levels, and gene expression in obese type 2 diabetic mice.

We investigated the effect of dietary Korean proso-millet protein concentrate (PMP) on glycemic responses, plasma lipid levels, and the plasma level and gene expression of adiponectin in obese type 2 diabetic mice under normal and high-fat feeding conditions. The findings were that the feeding of PMP clearly elevated plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) and adiponectin levels and brought about effective reduction in the levels of glucose and insulin in mice under high-fat diet conditions as compared with a control diet. Gene expression study revealed that the diet up-r

Effects of rumen-protected methionine on lactating F1 Holstein × Gyr cows grazing tropical pasture.

The effects of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) in Holstein cows fed TMR are well documented, but limited information is available on the responses to RPM in grazing dairy cows. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of RPM supplementation on milk and solids yields, DMI, feeding behavior, and plasma AA of grazing F1 Holstein × Gyr cows. We hypothesized that AA balancing with RPM would increase milk protein yield and ECM. Twenty-four multiparous cows (100 ± 55 DIM, 31.0 ± 4.8 kg milk/d, 590 ± 47 kg BW) were assigned to a randomized complete block design, blocked by milk yield and DIM. Within
