PURPOSE: Post-surgical panophthalmitis and necrotizing fasciitis are rare but potentially sight- and life-threatening complications requiring urgent treatment. We report a case of invasive Group A Streptococcus infection following combined cataract and Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implantation surgery.
OBSERVATIONS: A 69-year-old man with advanced neovascular glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation underwent uneventful cataract surgery with intraocular lens placement and glaucoma drainage device implantation using a donor scleral patch. On postoperative day (POD) zero, the graft was

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease commonly found in the tropics, is one of the most prevalent forms of Flavivirus infection in humans. Symptomatically, it is characterized by fever, arthralgia, headache, and rash. Ophthalmic manifestations can involve both the anterior and posterior segment. Panophthalmitis is rare in dengue hemorrhagic fever, and there is no report of culture-positive panophthalmitis in this setting. Here, we report a case of a serology-positive 33-year-old male patient of dengue hemorrhagic fever who developed sudden onset pain, redness, and proptosis in the right eye.

Orbital cellulitis along with panophthalmitis is uncommon. The causes are usually trauma-related or endogenous. The prognosis in terms of globe salvage is very poor, with most cases usually requiring enucleation or evisceration of the affected eye. Immunosuppression in some form is usually present, which accounts for the aggressive course of the infection. In this communication, we report on a case in a 25-year-old female, who in the second trimester of pregnancy had developed orbital cellulitis and panophthalmitis caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), with the primary

BACKGROUND Glaucoma drainage implants, including the Paul glaucoma implant, are widely used in the management of refractory glaucoma when medical therapy and conventional filtering surgery prove insufficient. Although associated with favorable outcomes, rare but serious postoperative complications such as endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis can occur, resulting in significant visual morbidity. CASE REPORT We describe the case of a 77-year-old man with chronic angle-closure glaucoma who developed acute panophthalmitis with orbital cellulitis 12 days following uneventful Paul glaucoma implant su

Here we report a case of childhood glaucoma refractory to angle and trabeculectomy surgery. The patient was treated with an Ahmed™ drainage implant that was subsequently complicated by rapid-onset panophthalmitis and orbital cellulitis. Intravenous and intravitreal antibiotic therapy was initiated and the drainage tube was removed. The infectious process resolved within 3 weeks; however, phthisis bulbi developed subsequently.

A 15-month-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) presented for lethargy and weight loss of 2 weeks duration. Upon physical examination, a 2-mm-diameter focal area of opacity was noted in the left cornea. In addition, the ferret was quiet, in poor body condition, and dehydrated. A complete blood count and plasma biochemistry revealed a severe nonregenerative anemia, azotemia, hyperproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and mild hyperphosphatemia and hyperchloremia. Urinalysis revealed hyposthenuria. Whole body radiographs showed multifocal thoracic nodular disease, splenomegaly, and renomegal

Bacillus cereus is a seldom recognised but important cause of panophthalmitis. Although most reported cases have been the result of endogenous infection, we have recently seen 4 cases that followed ocular trauma. In each instance a fulminating panophthalmitis developed, accompanied by fever and leucocytosis. Despite prompt therapy all eyes were rapidly lost. In view of the selective antibiotic sensitivities of this organism and the fulminating course of the disease, conventional approaches to therapy, including standard prophylactic antibiotic regimens, are unlikely to be successful in such ca

PURPOSE: To systematically review the characteristics of patients with endogenous tuberculous (TB) endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis in an effort to help clinicians with diagnosis and treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science from inception to August 2020. References and abstracts were screened independently by two authors. Included studies were case reports and case series reporting endogenous TB endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). Available-case analysis

Panophthalmitis is the most extensive ocular involvement in endophthalmitis with inflammation in periocular tissues. Severe inflammation of the anterior and posterior segments is frequently accompanied by corneal opacity, scleral abscess, and perforation or rupture. Enucleation or evisceration was the only remaining viable treatment option when all options to salvage the eye had been exhausted. The purpose of this retrospective study is to examine the outcomes of patients with endogenous bacterial panophthalmitis, no light perception and scleral abscess who were treated with multiple intravitr

BACKGROUND: We report a rare presentation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Burmese woman with human immunodeficiency virus infection and known pulmonary tuberculosis who had been treated for 5 months presented to our hospital with unilateral progressive painful visual loss of 1 month's duration. She was diagnosed with tuberculous panophthalmitis with subretinal and intraorbital abscesses, conjunctival abscess, and extraocular muscle tuberculoma. The diagnosis was confirmed by a conjunctival pus swab with a positive result for acid-fast bacilli and a positive re

PURPOSE: To report the first documented case of postoperative endophthalmitis progressing to panophthalmitis in a silicone oil-filled eye (SO) following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), and to review the relevant literature.
METHODS: A single case of postoperative endophthalmitis that progressed to panophthalmitis following PPV with heavy SO tamponade was retrospectively reviewed, including clinical presentation, imaging, microbiological investigations, management, and outcomes. A focused literature review was conducted to identify previously reported cases of post-vitrectomy and SO-related panop

A 52-year-old man who presented with a large ciliochoroidal malignant melanoma was treated by application of a 106Ru plaque. At 8 days after removal of the plaque, severe panophthalmitis with rapidly progressive scleral necrosis at the site of the tumor made enucleation inevitable because of impending perforation of the globe. Microscopic examination revealed an intense inflammatory response and almost complete necrosis of the tumor and overlying sclera. Possible mechanisms for the occurrence of this rare complication are discussed.

RATIONALE: Panophthalmitis is a severe, vision-threatening condition that may result from endogenous spread of infection, often presenting with systemic symptoms. Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) is a known cause of endogenous panophthalmitis, typically associated with underlying conditions such as diabetes and often linked to pyogenic liver abscesses. However, cases presenting solely with ocular symptoms are exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of Kp panophthalmitis with a concurrent asymptomatic liver abscess, emphasizing the importance of systemic evaluation in atypical ocular inf

We describe a case of a poorly controlled diabetic patient with left endogenous panophthalmitis with orbital cellulitis and positive ocular culture of Escherichia coli with negative systemic workup and rare clinical presentation. Was misdiagnosed and mismanaged as acute angle-closure glaucoma. Despite medical treatment with intravenous antibiotics, the patient required evisceration of the left eye as a result of the delay in diagnosis and treatment. A high index of suspicion for endogenous endophthalmitis and awareness of the proper workup and different clinical presentations is needed to avoi

Ocular tuberculosis (OTB) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) commonly presents as choroidal tubercles or granuloma. We report a rare presentation of OTB with hypopyon granulomatous uveitis in a patient with HIV on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Aqueous humor polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Antitubercular therapy (ATT) was initiated despite which it progressed to scleral abscess and panophthalmitis. Enucleation with ball implantation was done. Histopathology revealed caseating granuloma with numerous acid-fast ba
