Phosphorus is an important macronutrient, but its availability in soil is limited. Many soil microorganisms improve the bioavailability of phosphate by releasing it from various organic compounds, including phytate. To investigate the diversity of phytate-hydrolyzing bacteria in soil, we sampled soils of various ecological habitats, including forest, private homesteads, large agricultural complexes, and urban landscapes. Bacterial isolate Pantoea sp. strain 3.5.1 with the highest level of phytase activity was isolated from forest soil and investigated further. The Pantoea sp. 3.5.1 agpP gene e

Pantoea piersonii (formerly Kalamiella piersonii) is a recently reclassified environmental Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Erwiniaceae. Human infections caused by this organism are extremely rare. Here, we report a rare case of implantable venous access port-associated soft tissue infection caused by P. piersonii in a 49-year-old immunocompromised woman with lung cancer. The pathogen was isolated from purulent discharge obtained from the port site and identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterium Pantoea agglomerans (synonyms: Enterobacter agglomerans, Erwinia herbicola) is known both as an epiphytic microbe developing on the surface of plants and as an endophytic organism living inside the plants. The bacterium occurs also abundantly in plant and animal products, in the body of arthropods and other animals, in water, soil, dust and air, and occasionally in humans. From the human viewpoint, the role of this organism is ambiguous, both deleterious and beneficial: on one side it causes disorders in people exposed to inhalation of organic dusts and d

We investigated the production of 2,3-butanediol by two enterobacteria isolated from an environmental consortium, Klebsiella pneumoniae BLh-1 and Pantoea agglomerans BL1, in a bioprocess using acid and enzymatic hydrolysates of soybean hull as substrates. Cultivations were carried out in orbital shaker under microaerophilic conditions, at 30°C and 37°C, for both bacteria. Both hydrolysates presented high osmotic pressures, around 2,000 mOsm/kg, with varying concentrations of glucose, xylose, and arabinose. Both bacteria were able to grow in the hydrolysates, at both temperatures, and they effi

The regulation of capsule synthesis (Rcs) regulatory network is responsible for the induction of exopolysaccharide biosynthesis in many enterobacterial species. We have previously shown that two transcriptional regulators, RcsA and RcsB, do bind as a heterodimer to the promoter of amsG, the first reading frame in the operon for amylovoran biosynthesis in the plant pathogenic bacterium Erwinia amylovora. We now identified a 23-base pair fragment from position -555 to -533 upstream of the translational start site of amsG as sufficient for the specific binding of the Rcs proteins. In addition, we

The mineral phosphate-solubilizing (MPS) activity of a Pantoea agglomerans strain, namely MMB051, isolated from an iron-rich, acidic soil near Ciudad Piar (Bolívar State, Venezuela), was characterized on a chemically defined medium (NBRIP). Various insoluble inorganic phosphates, including tri-calcium phosphate [Ca(3)(PO(4))(2)], iron phosphate (FePO(4)), aluminum phosphate (AlPO(4)), and Rock Phosphate (RP) were tested as sole sources of P for bacterial growth. Solubilization of Ca(3)(PO(4))(2) was very efficient and depended on acidification of the external milieu when MMB051 cells were grow

The YopJ group of acetylating effectors from phytopathogens of the genera Pseudomonas and Ralstonia have been widely studied to understand how they modify and suppress their host defence targets. In contrast, studies on a related group of effectors, the Eop1 group, lag far behind. Members of the Eop1 group are widely present in the Erwinia-Pantoea clade of Gram-negative bacteria, which contains phytopathogens, non-pathogens and potential biocontrol agents, implying that they may play an important role in agroecological or pathological adaptations. The lack of research in this group of YopJ eff

Forty-two extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates of Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Pantoea agglomerans, and Serratia marcescens, collected consecutively during the period January-November 2011 from the University Hospital in Varna, Bulgaria, were studied to characterize their ESBLs by isoelectric focusing, group-specific PCR, and sequencing. The epidemiological relationship was evaluated by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD). Transferability of ESBL genes was determined by conjugation experiments. Plasmid analysis was done by replicon typing and

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys has become an invasive insect pest of many crops. A promising control strategy to manage the proliferation of H. halys is based on the suppression of its obligate and vertically transmitted uncultivated symbiotic bacterium Candidatus Pantoea carbekii through surface-sterilization of H. halys eggs. Indeed, the application of antimicrobial formulations on the eggs of H. halys could cause mortality of endosymbiont and consequently of newly emerged nymphs. In this study, a microbial live/dead assay was applied directly on H. halys eggs t

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in acidic soils poses a critical threat to agricultural productivity and safety. However, effective microbial strategies remain challenging due to the scarcity of microbial resources that are dual-resistant to acid and Cd. Here, we investigated the Cd-resistance mechanisms of Pantoea sp. EEL5, an acid- and Cd-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacterium, and evaluated its potential to remediate acidic Cd-contaminated soil. EEL5 exhibited efficient Cd2 + removal through extracellular adsorption and intracellular accumulation. Transcriptomic and biochemical analyses revea

BACKGROUND: Although microbial biopesticides are widely applied to manage foliar insect pests, their application against belowground insect pests has received less attention. These pests are generally more challenging to manage due to their concealed soil-dwelling lifestyle and the limited availability of delivery methods. Here, we evaluated the potential of Pseudomonas and Pantoea strains as a biocontrol strategy against the lettuce root aphid (Pemphigus bursarius) in witloof chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum) using a realistic delivery approach based on seed inoculation, preceded b

The spread of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in uncommon human pathogens endangers global public health, escalating morbidity, death, and healthcare expenditures. Pantoea agglomerans, a member of the Erwiniaceae family that rarely infects humans, is emerging as a drug-resistant nosocomial pathogen. Seven P. agglomerans isolates were recovered from bacteremia patients at a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, between March 2022 and October 2022. The isolates were evaluated for phenotypic resistance, β-lactamase and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes, plasmid profiling, a

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the inflammatory response to invading organisms. Polymyxin B-immobilized fiber column direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) is used to reduce blood endotoxin levels and modulate circulating inflammatory cytokine levels in sepsis patients. Here we report that severe sepsis caused by an infection of the gram-negative bacterium Pantoea agglomerans in a patient with small cell lung carcinoma was treated successfully with antibiotics and PMX-DHP. The patient, a 49-year-old Japanese male smoker whose condition was complicated with hyponatremia due to SIADH (

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers has led to severe agricultural pollution and soil degradation. Algal-bacterial consortia, as eco-friendly microbial inoculants, offer a promising strategy to reduce fertilizer dependency and promote sustainable agriculture. In this study, we constructed a consortium (ZD-1) comprising the potassium-solubilizing bacterium Pantoea vagans ZHS-1 and the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Desmonostoc muscorum GD2. Co-cultivation at various ratios showed that a 1:1 ratio maximized mutual growth promotion, chemotaxis, and biofilm formation. Under this optimal ratio, t

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to generate the first complete genome of Pantoea septica and provide a thorough genomic characterisation of this under-documented species. The study seeks to enhance understanding of P. septica, clarifying features relevant to opportunistic infection in vulnerable cohorts.
METHODS: P. septica GABEPS69 was an opportunistic coloniser isolated from the saliva of a patient prescribed the antipsychotic clozapine, leading to a dysbiotic oral microbiome. A hybrid sequencing approach yielded a closed genome comprising a 4.1 Mb chromosome and six plasmids. Phenotypic suscep

Recently, the incidence of allergies has been increasing, especially in advanced countries. The cause of these allergies is believed to be a failure in the immune system balance that has been caused by changes in the living environment. The incidence of allergy shows a negative correlation with the decrease of infectious diseases in childhood. It has been suggested that the key to alleviating allergies is to activate innate immunity by exposure to microbial components such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The activation of innate immunity is expected to normalize the T-helper type 1 and 2 (Th1/Th

Endophytes are microorganisms that are perceived as non-pathogenic symbionts found inside plants since they cause no symptoms of disease on the host plant. Soil conditions and geography among other factors contribute to the type(s) of endophytes isolated from plants. Our research interest is the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolite crude extracts from the medicinal plant Solanum mauritianum and its bacterial endophytes. Fresh, healthy stems of S. mauritianum were collected, washed, surface sterilized, macerated in PBS, inoculated in the nutrient agar plates, and incubated for 5 days

Bacteria enter milk during poor hygiene practices and can form a biofilm on surfaces that come into contact with human milk. The presence of a biofilm increases the risk of infections among newborns as bacteria protected by biofilm are resistant to washing and disinfection processes. The formation of the biofilm depends on the microbial species, environmental conditions, and the specific materials colonized. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of factors such as temperature, incubation time, and initial cell concentration on biofilm formation by pathogenic bacteria isolated from hu
