Large nasopharyngeal inverted papilloma presenting with rustling tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common symptom caused by numerous diseases. The etiology is unknown in most cases; however, nasopharyngeal lesions may cause a certain tinnitus. We herein report a case of nasopharyngeal inverted papilloma which presents with rustling tinnitus as the sole initial symptom. The tympanic membrane was intact, and results of hearing test and impedance audiometry were normal. However, sonotubometry showed a complete blockage of the Eustachian tube. A large tumor was found that originated from the choana and occupied the nasopharynx which caused a rustling sound when she swallowed or sp

[Bilateral inverted papilloma originating from the frontal sinus].

Inverted papilloma is a benign neoplasm characterized by its high rate of recurrence, local aggressiveness, and malignancy potential. Nasal obstruction is the most frequent presenting complaint. Bilateral inverted papillom involving both sides of the frontal sinus is extremely rare. Herein, we present a 64-year-old male case with a bilateral inverted papilloma involving the frontal sinus which was removed by an endoscopic surgery.

Inverted papilloma arising primarily from the lacrimal sac.

A 24-year-old female was referred with epiphora and a non-tender swelling within the right lacrimal fossa, present for 6 months. There were no previous episodes of dacryocystitis. Computed tomography showed a homogenous mass within the lacrimal fossa without contrast enhancement. Pathology following resection of the whole lacimal sac revealed the presence of an inverted papilloma (IP) with a sharp transition between the papilloma and the normal lacrimal duct epithelium. In situ hybridisation was positive for low risk HPV subtypes. An IP is a benign but infiltrative epithelial neoplasm with mal

Bilateral inverted papilloma: case report and literature review.

The inverted papilloma is an uncommon unilateral nasosinusal benign tumor. The clinical picture presents nonspecific signs and symptoms, such as unilateral nasal obstruction, anosmia and headache. The diagnosis is established by anamnesis, physical exam, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment is essentially surgical. This report has the objective of presenting an uncommon bilateral inverted nasal papilloma and making a literature review.

Case report: laparoscopic resection of ureteral inverted papilloma.

Inverted papilloma of the ureter is a rare entity, often mistaken for malignancy during work-up. As such, many of these patients have been unnecessarily treated with nephroureterectomy. Herein, we describe a novel laparoscopic approach for the treatment of a ureteral inverted papilloma. To our knowledge, this approach is the first application of laparoscopy for the treatment of this lesion.

Minimally invasive treatment of the nasal inverted papilloma.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this work is to evaluate our results in the treatment of the nasal inverted papillomas with an endoscopic approach using a retrospective case series. METHODS: Between 1993 and 2000 we treated 27 patients with nasal inverted papillomas. All patients underwent endoscopic nasal surgery under general anesthesia. None of the inverted papillomas extended outside of the paranasal sinuses. All tissue samples underwent polymerase chain reaction and hybridization in situ to detect genetic sequences of the human papilloma virus and Epstein Barr virus. RESULTS: The study popul

Inverted urothelial papilloma: a lesion with malignant potential.

Two cases of inverted urothelial papilloma are presented. In the first case the inverted papilloma was in the ureter and varying degrees of cellular atypia were demonstrated on histology: 7 years later, a single bladder lesion consisting of papillary transitional cell carcinoma and inverted papilloma developed in the same patient. In the second case a bladder tumor consisting of inverted papilloma mixed with papillary infiltrating transitional cell carcinoma was detected. The peculiar morphological findings, histogenesis and biological behavior of inverted urothelial lesions are discussed.

Multiple simultaneous inverted papillomas of the upper urinary tract. A case report with a review of ureteral and renal pelvic inverted papillomas.

An asymptomatic 73-year-old woman was found to have multiple, simultaneous, inverted papillomas of the renal pelvis and ureter. A review of the world literature yielded 34 cases of inverted papillomas in the upper urinary tract: 13 in the renal pelvis, and 21 in the ureter. Among these 34 cases, there were 26 male and five female patients, with gender not given for three others. Patients ranged in age from 19 to 89 years (mean, 64.1 years). Many cases lacked complete clinical details but, among the others, gross painless hematuria was the presenting symptom in seven; hematuria with flank pain

Bilateral inverted papilloma: Case report and literature review.

Inverted papilloma is a rare, benign epithelial tumor of the nasal and sinus cavities with an unclear etiology. It usually presents as unilateral nasal obstruction. Diagnosis is histological, and treatment is primarily surgical. We describe a 72-year-old patient with persistent bilateral nasal obstruction. Examination revealed a greyish-pink, multi-lobed mass in both nasal cavities pressing on the hard palate. Imaging (CT and MRI) showed a cerebriform mass extending through the nasal cavities and into the nasopharynx, causing bone destruction without intracranial or intra-orbital spread. Histo

Frontal sinus inverted papilloma managed with Draf III.

Inverted papilloma (IP) is a rare benign tumor that originates from nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa. Although it is considered a benign lesion, it is locally aggressive and has risk between 7 and 15% for malignant transformation. The management of frontal sinus (FS) IP is still challenging due to its rarity and local invasiveness. We report a rare case of IP originating from FS, and to review the literature to delineate the possible surgical strategy. A 52-year-old male presented with long-standing history of bilateral nasal obstruction and left eye proptosis. Sinus navigation computed tomogr

Imaging predictors for malignant transformation of inverted papilloma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Inverted papillomas (IPs) are benign tumors of the sinonasal tract with a malignant transformation potential. Predicting the transformation propensity of IPs and corresponding risk factors has long been a challenge. In this study, we aimed to use radiographic findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) to help differentiate IP from IP-transformed squamous cell carcinomas (IP-SCC). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed at two institutions comparing IP (n = 76) and IP-SCC (n = 66) tumors, e

Multifocal sinonasal inverted papilloma with middle ear involvement.

Inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity is a benign neoplasm, although it can be locally invasive and has the potential for malignant degeneration. Inverted papilloma of the temporal bone is extremely rare. We describe a case of a 44-year-old woman who was treated for nasal inverted papilloma and was later found to have inverted papilloma of her temporal bone. The patient required several procedures to remove the inverted papilloma from the nasal cavity and temporal bone, and she is currently free of recurrence.

Incidence of inverted papilloma in recurrent nasal polyposis.

OBJECTIVES: A diagnosis of inverted papilloma in apparently normal bilateral polyps is a possible albeit rare event. The frequency of this diagnosis varies between 0.00% and 0.92%. There are no studies evaluating whether this possibility is significantly different in patients operated for recurrence when compared with those undergoing first surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of inverted papilloma in a series of histologic specimens obtained from patients undergoing surgery for recurrent nasal polyposis. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective chart and patholog

Synchronous inverted papilloma of bladder and renal pelvis.

Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is a rare tumor that consists of uniform urothelial cells with an inverted configuration and a normal urothelial lining. Despite several published reports, the prognostic significance and the potential biologic behavior remain uncertain. We detail a case of synchronous inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder and the renal pelvis and review the published data.
