HPV vaccination and the effects on rates of HPV-related cancers.

Globally, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infection. HPV is linked to at least five malignancies including vulvar, vaginal, anal penile, oropharyngeal, and cervical cancer. Three HPV vaccines are currently available: bivalent (HPV 16,18), quadrivalent (HPV 6,11,16,18), and nonavalent (6,11,16,18,31,33,45,52,58) targeting between 2 and 7 oncogenic HPV serotypes. This review highlights the currently epidemiologic burden of HPV-related cancers, efficacy of current HPV vaccines, and speculates about the benefits of widespread HPV vaccination. At

UVC radiation as an effective disinfectant method to inactivate human papillomaviruses.

Endocavitary ultrasound probes are part of a commonly used procedure in the clinical arena. The cavities examined, vaginal canal and cervix, anal canal, and oral cavity are all areas commonly infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), thus making them susceptible to contamination by HPV. It has been demonstrated that these probes can remain contaminated with high-risk HPV even when approved disinfection protocols have been performed. we have previously shown that HPV is resistant to some high-level disinfectant (HLD). In our present study we analyzed efficacy of using high-level ultra-viole

Vertically transmitted nasopharyngeal infection of the human papillomavirus: does it play an aetiological role in nasopharyngeal cancer?

Despite identification of important risk factors, aetiology of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) remained enigmatic. Oncogenic Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a cause of cervical and genital tract epithelial cancers, has recently been isolated from NPC tumour tissues, raising the question of whether HPV may play a role in NPC. Accumulating evidence showed that perinatal HPV transmission to newborns can occur through exposures to genital tract secretions, amniotic fluid, or blood during vaginal delivery in mothers with cervical HPV infection, with viral DNA fingerprint showing maternal-foetal concordance

The changing aetiology of head and neck cancer: the role of human papillomavirus.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with the development of a subset of head and neck cancers arising in the oropharynx, which includes the tonsils, base of tongue and soft palate. HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) seems to be rapidly increasing in incidence in many countries, including the USA, Sweden and Greece, and is known to affect younger patients who are less likely to have been exposed to the carcinogenic effects of tobacco and alcohol than their HPV-negative counterparts. There is accumulating evidence from prospective studies that HPV-positive OPC responds better to trea

Current status of antiviral therapy for juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are among the most prevalent of the sexually transmitted diseases, with up to 75% of women in the United States acquiring genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. HPV infections of the genital tract are of medical and public health concern due to their propensity to lead to the development of cervical cancer, and because they can be transmitted to the respiratory tract of a newborn child, resulting in juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JO-RRP). JO-RRP is the second most common cause of hoarseness among pediatric patients, and i

Human papillomavirus infection: treatment options for warts.

Human papillomavirus can produce verrucae, or warts, on cutaneous and mucosal surfaces. Although the diagnosis is usually straightforward, issues regarding the need for treatment and the choice of treatment are complex. The rationale for the treatment of viral warts is based on the prevention of spread to other areas of the body or to other people; the prevention of irritation, bleeding and other unwanted local effects of the wart; cosmetic and psychosocial considerations, and the possible association with neoplasia. A significant proportion of warts resolve spontaneously within two years. Man

The epidemiological trends and survival of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer other than tonsils and base of tongue - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a well-established cause of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) located in the tonsils and base of tongue, but the association with other oropharyngeal subsites (otherOPSCC) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the worldwide prevalence of HPV in otherOPSCC and its impact on survival utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. METHODS: The study outcomes and measures were planned at PROSPERO in advance. PubMed was searched from the earliest available record to September 1st, 20

The Current Landscape of Treatment of Warts.

Warts have bothered people since the early Greek and Roman empires.5 For centuries, people have studied causes of and treatments for these irritating tumors. In recent history, treatments have stagnated. Warts are caused by non-enveloped, circular, double-stranded DNA human papillomavirus (HPV).6 Most infections are subclinical, but clinically relevant disease ranges from warts to invasive carcinoma.6 Two-thirds of warts resolve spontaneously within 2 years, meaning that the stakes for treatments are high.4 Successful therapies need to have high resolution, few side effects, and act fast. The

Overview of virus and cancer relationships. Position paper.

The role of certain viruses in the etiology of some tumors is today indisputable, but there is a lack, however, of annoverview of the relationship between viruses and cancer with amultidisciplinary approach. For this reason, the Health Sciences Foundation has convened a group of professionals from different areas of knowledge to discuss the relationship between viruses and cancer, and the present document is the result of these deliberations. Although viruses cause only 10-15% of cancers, advances in oncology research are largely due to the work done during the last century on tumor viruses. T

Effectiveness of autoinoculation in viral warts: A single arm, open-label, and clinical trial.

Viral warts are well-defined, hyperkeratotic mucocutaneous lesions caused by human papilloma virus infection, that can occur anywhere on the body. Various medical and surgical modalities are required for treatment of warts as spontaneous regression is rarely seen. Despite the availability of multiple treatment options, warts are often recurrent and resistant to treatment. The effectiveness of autoinoculation in the treatment of multiple or recurrent verruca was evaluated. Consecutive cases with at least five warts or recurrent warts were included. A treatment-free washout period of 1 month was

Identification and characterization of novel human papillomaviruses in oral rinse samples from oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to: I) discover novel human papillomaviruses (HPVs) using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology in oral rinse samples collected from oral cavity cancer (OCC) and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) patients; II) determine the prevalence of novel HPVs in archived OCC and OPC tissue samples; and III) examine the frequency of novel oncogenic HPVs in cancer and non-cancer oral rinse samples using real-time PCR. METHODS: Oral rinse samples were collected from 100 head and neck cancer patients, and 110 healthy individuals. NGS techniques were used to detec

Recent advances in the study of HPV-associated carcinogenesis.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause virtually all cervical cancers, the second leading cause of death by cancer among women, as well as other anogenital cancers and a subset of head and neck cancers. Approximately half of women, who develop cervical cancer die from it. Despite the optimism that has accompanied the introduction of prophylactic vaccines to prevent some HPV infections, the relatively modest uptake of the vaccine, especially in the developing world, and the very high fraction of men and women who are already infected, means that HPV-associated disease will remain as a significant

Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) no co-existence in breast cancer and cervical cells in the same patient.

High-risk HPVs were detected in both breast cancer tissues and cervical cells from 56 breast cancer patients. The results suggested that HPV infection did not coexist in breast and cervical tissues. HPV infection of the breast cancer tissue is more likely to happen in patients without cervical infection.
