Para taekwondo has become a prominent sport within the adapted community, especially since its inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 + 1 Paralympic Games. This study aimed to explore the distribution of female and male Para taekwondo athletes across body region-specific impairments (wrist, elbow, shoulder impairment, and limbs without amputation) considering different performance outcomes (gold, silver, bronze, and nonmedalists) in international competitions from 2021 to 2024. A total of 902 matches were analyzed, comprising 450 female and 452 male matches, with multiple combats per athlete across 11 Wo

Monitoring the activities of athletes with lower-limb amputations who use running-specific prostheses is essential for evaluating their training regimes, as well as the effectiveness and mechanical fatigue wear of their prostheses over time. Recent advancements in Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and activity detection algorithms offer new opportunities for objective assessment, but their application in Paralympic sports remains unexplored. The aims of this work were to design and implement an innovative protocol and analytical software for short-term and long-term activity detection of athle

Murphy, CJ, Mason, BS, and Goosey-Tolfrey, VL. Exercise recovery practices of wheelchair court sports athletes. J Strength Cond Res 35(2): 366-372, 2021-Research that describes the recovery practices of Para-athletes around training and competition is limited. This study investigated if and why athletes in wheelchair court sports (basketball, rugby, and tennis) use recovery strategies, what type of strategies are used, and whether the period of the season influences the prevalence of use. A cross-sectional questionnaire was developed to acquire data pertaining to individual characteristics, re…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Neglect of oral health issues among athletes poses health risk for athletes and affects their performance. Despite that, there is a significant research gap concerning the oral health of athletes to better comprehend the prevalence and type of oral health disorders in this population. The goal of this study is to gather evidence to determine the prevalence and types of oral diseases among athletes and analyze the differences in oral health issues between elite and paralympic athletes.
METHODS: A systematic search approach was applied to 3 web-based scientific databas

Race data containing speed and stroke rate per 50m, provided by World Rowing, were compared with measurements using an ASI AdMos sensor, which is a high-end sports tracker, to assess the agreement between the two measurement systems. Twelve races in 2022, 2023, and 2024 were considered. All measurements were of the same rower competing in the Paralympic PR1 W1x class. The race data speed was compared with speed calculated from the GNSS data of the AdMos sensor, while stroke rate was compared with the stroke rate calculated from the surge acceleration of the IMU data of the AdMos sensor. PURPOSE: Para-karate has been gaining popularity rapidly; however, scientific research on the subject remains limited. This study aims to examine the kata preferences at top-level para-karate events and explore the relationship between sport class (type of impairment) and kata selection.
METHODS: Data was collected from nine events-four World Para-Karate Championships (2016, 2018, 2021, 2023) and five European Para-Karate Championships (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023). A total of 906 katas were performed: 567 by males and 339 by females. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used for

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate sleep characteristics and investigate the relationship of sleep with injuries and illnesses in Paralympic athletes.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: Sports Training Center.
PARTICIPANTS: 20 Paralympic athletes of athletics, swimming, and powerlifting.
OUTCOMES: Injury and illnesses were recorded during the sports season through the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center questionnaire (OSTRC-BR). Sleep-wake pattern was monitored for 2 weeks using actigraphy. Chronotype, sleep quality, sleep behavior, and sleep complaints were cross-sectionally collected.
RESULTS: Poor

Endurance events are popular worldwide and have many health benefits. However, runners and Para athletes may sustain musculoskeletal injuries or experience other health consequences from endurance events. The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Runner Health Consortium aimed to generate consensus-based survey items for use in prospective research to identify risk factors for injuries in runners and Para athletes training and competing in endurance events. The study design employed a modified Delphi approach, with a panel comprising 28 experts, including healthcare professional

Cerebral palsy (CP) football is a team para-sport practiced by para-athletes with eligible impairments of hypertonia, athetosis, and ataxia. This study aimed: (1) to describe the anthropometrical and body composition profiles of international CP para-footballers with different CP profiles (i.e., spastic diplegia, athetosis/ataxia, spastic hemiplegia, and minimum impairment); (2) to analyze the differences between both affected/nondominant and nonaffected/dominant sides; and (3) to compare the sample of international-level CP para-footballers (n = 141) with a sample of highly trained able-bodie…

BACKGROUND: Isthmic spondylolysis represents the most common cause of spinal pain in adolescent athletes. This article provides an overview of the classification, diagnosis, and treatment options for these conditions, including conservative and operative measures. It also provides a treatment pathway to how young athletes with spondylolysis should be treated.
DIAGNOSTICS: Diagnostic imaging techniques are essential for an accurate diagnosis, with CT scans providing additional information for surgical planning.
TREATMENT: Conservative treatment focuses on activity modification and physiothera

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of sports injury at the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.
METHODS: 567 athletes from 49 countries were monitored daily for 12 days over the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games (6804 athlete days). Injury data were obtained daily from teams with their own medical support (41 teams and 557 athletes) and teams without their own medical support (8 teams and 10 athletes) through two electronic data capturing systems.
RESULTS: 112 of 567 athletes (19.8%) reported a total of 142 injuries, with an injury incidence rate (IR) of 20.9 per 1000 athlet

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Effective thermoregulation is paramount for optimizing athletic performance and minimizing the risk of heat illness when exercising, especially in hot conditions. Para-athletes can face unique challenges in regard to thermoregulation and hydration, especially when travel is involved.
RECENT FINDINGS: For example, athletes with spinal cord injuries (SCI) have an impaired ability to thermoregulate due to a decreased sweat rate and ability to dissipate heat, thus making vigorous activity in the heat a challenge. These factors may put the athlete at risk for the following: dehy…

To become a Paralympian and sustain that level, effective training is particularly important. Training extends further than just improving one's physical abilities through strength and conditioning. Training the mind, improving biomechanics, recovery, and using technology all aid in improving the athlete's overall performance. This article focuses on summarizing the current research regarding adaptive athletes while extrapolating from the able-bodied research when research is limited.

Two forms of perfectionism were examined in the present study to see whether they predicted prosocial and antisocial behaviors in sport through moral disengagement and altruism in a sample of 327 wheelchair basketball and rugby athletes (M = 33.57 years, SD = 10.51; 83% male). Using structural equation modeling, the following significant direct and indirect effects were found. First, perfectionistic strivings positively predicted perceived prosocial behaviors and altruism. Second, perfectionistic concerns negatively predicted altruism and prosocial behaviors and positively predicted moral dise
