Parametric Study of an Electroosmotic Micromixer with Heterogeneous Charged Surface Patches.

A T-shaped micromixer featuring electroosmotic flow with heterogeneous charged surface patches on the channel walls was analyzed, and an improved design was proposed to enhance mixing performance. Numerical analysis was performed using steady Navier-Stokes equations with an additional electrokinetic body force. The numerical results for species concentration were validated with available experimental data. A parametric analysis of the micromixer was performed by varying channel height, channel width, patch width, and externally applied voltage. The effects of these parameters on the flow struc

A multi-parametric protocol to study exercise intolerance in McArdle's disease.

McArdle's disease is the most common metabolic myopathy of muscle carbohydrate metabolism, due to deficiency of myophosphorylase and alteration of glycogen breakdown in muscle. The clinical manifestations usually begin in young adulthood, with exercise intolerance, exercise-induced muscle cramps, pain and recurrent episodes of myoglobinuria. Many patients experience the second wind phenomenon, characterized by an improved tolerance for aerobic exercise approximately after eight minutes of motor activity, secondary to the increased availability of blood glucose and free fatty acids associated t

Experimental generation of continuous-variable hyperentanglement in an optical parametric oscillator.

We report on the generation of continuous-variable hyperentanglement of polarization and orbital angular momentum with a type II optical parametric oscillator. By compensating for the astigmatism between spatial modes, we produce an entangled pair of Hermite-Gauss beams. From correlations measurements, we verify the existence of continuous-variable hyperentanglement by the general entanglement criterion as well as by the continuous-variable version of the Peres-Horodecki criterion visualized on an equivalent Poincaré sphere.

Efficient characterization of pollutant-emission response under parametric uncertainty.

An essential requirement of modeling for air quality management is to accurately simulate the responses of pollutant concentrations to changes in emissions. Uncertain model input parameters such as emission rates and reaction rate constants lead to uncertainty in model responses. However, traditional methods for characterizing parametric uncertainty are exceedingly computationally intensive. This paper presents methods for using high-order sensitivity coefficients in analytical equations to efficiently represent how the responsiveness of pollutants to emission reductions in the underlying phot

Parametric 3D hip joint segmentation for the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia.

In this paper, we present a segmentation method for the hip joint from 3D ultrasound data. The proposed approach starts from a well-known energy formulation of the segmentation problem, and employs the extended local structure tensor as image feature in order to incorporate gray level and texture information in a common framework. Using the Kullback-Leibler distance as an intrinsic dissimilarity measure, the energy minimization is performed by estimating the optimal parameters of the sphere and paraboloid that best approximate the femoral head and acetabulum, respectively. A 2D level set segme

SPECT imaging in head injury interpreted with statistical parametric mapping.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated regional cerebral blood flow in head-injured patients using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) to detect hypoperfusion on (99m)Tc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) SPECT scans. METHODS: Acute and follow-up SPECT and MRI scans from 61 patients who were admitted to a regional neurosurgical unit were examined. Patients had acute MRI and SPECT at 2-18 d after injury and on follow-up between 130 and 366 d after injury. Thirty-two scans from non-head-injured patients were used as a SPECT control group. The SPECT images were first aligned to the Talairach-T

A parametric fMRI study of overt and covert shifts of visuospatial attention.

It has recently been demonstrated that a cortical network of visuospatial and oculomotor control areas is active for covert shifts of spatial attention (shifts of attention without eye movements) as well as for overt shifts of spatial attention (shifts of attention with saccadic eye movements). Studies examining activity in this visuospatial network during attentional shifts at a single rate have given conflicting reports about how the activity differs for overt and covert shifts. To better understand how the network subserves attentional shifts, we performed a parametric study in which subjec

[Method for recording the parametrical situation in cases of carcinoma of the cervix uteri].

The degree of parametrical infiltration in cases of carcinoma of the cervix uteri could until now be judged by palpation only. Special ultrasound examinations with rectal scanners should be beneficial in future for the recording of the parametrical situation. Although it is not possible to differentiate between inflammatory and cancerous infiltration with this new method, additional punctures under echographic control could be of great value.

Alternative forms of the parametric Go/No-Go task: development and comparison.

INTRODUCTION: The Parametric Go/No-Go (PGNG) task assesses cognitive domains, including executive functioning and processing speed, within three difficulty levels. The PGNG task was originally developed for clinical and research assessments, in only one version (using target consonants, XYZ). The study aims to develop six alternative tri-consonant forms of the preexistent form and to test their equality. We hypothesized performance differences between each difficulty level of a given PGNG version, and that, in contrast, all the tri-consonant alternate versions would be equivalent in performanc

Canada1Water: Hydraulic parametrized integrated soil, bedrock and peatlands datasets.

The Canada1Water (C1W) initiative is a national-scale effort to model Canada's hydrologic cycle, integrating groundwater, surface water, and climate influences across continental Canada and shared watersheds with the United States. Soil, bedrock, and peatlands critically connect atmospheric processes, vegetation, and hydrology. Infiltration and recharge are governed by the hydraulic properties and topographic and pressure gradients, making accurate representation of surficial substrates essential in hydrological modelling. For continental-scale groundwater-surface water modelling in Canada, a

Integrated unidirectional traveling-wave phonon waveguide parametric amplifier.

Phonons, the quanta of elastic waves, play pivotal roles across a wide range of applications in both classical and quantum domains. Advancements in nanofabrication technologies have enabled phononic integrated circuits (PnICs) that provide nanoscale phonon control and enhanced interaction strengths, opening new avenues for fundamental research and innovative devices. Phonon amplifiers are essential active components of PnICs for advanced signal processing. However, traveling-wave integrated waveguide-based phonon parametric amplifiers have remained unrealized. Here, we demonstrate unidirection

Bayesian Model Averaging of Parametric Coalescent Models for Phylodynamic Inference.

Bayesian phylodynamic models have become essential for reconstructing population history from genetic data, yet their accuracy depends crucially on choosing appropriate demographic models. To address uncertainty in model choice, we introduce a Bayesian model averaging (BMA) framework that integrates multiple parametric coalescent models-including constant, exponential, logistic, and Gompertz growth-along with their "expansion" variants that account for non-zero ancestral populations. Implemented in a Bayesian setting with Metropolis-coupled Markov chain Monte Carlo, this approach allows the sa

OFraMP: a fragment-based tool to facilitate the parametrization of large molecules.

An Online tool for Fragment-based Molecule Parametrization (OFraMP) is described. OFraMP is a web application for assigning atomic interaction parameters to large molecules by matching sub-fragments within the target molecule to equivalent sub-fragments within the Automated Topology Builder (ATB, atb.uq.edu.au) database. OFraMP identifies and compares alternative molecular fragments from the ATB database, which contains over 890,000 pre-parameterized molecules, using a novel hierarchical matching procedure. Atoms are considered within the context of an extended local environment (buffer region

Method for parametric imaging of attenuation by intravascular optical coherence tomography.

Catheter-based intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) is a powerful imaging modality for visualization of atherosclerosis with high resolution. Quantitative characterization of various tissue types by attenuation coefficient (AC) extraction has been proven to be a potentially significant application of OCT attenuation imaging. However, existing methods for AC extraction from OCT suffer from the challenge of variability in complex tissue types in IVOCT pullback data such as healthy vessel wall, mixed atherosclerotic plaques, plaques with a single component and stent struts, etc. Thi

Parametrizing the genioplasty: a biomechanical virtual study on soft tissue behavior.

PURPOSE: Sliding genioplasty is used to surgically correct a retruded or misaligned chin: in this procedure, an osteotomy is performed and the bony segment is repositioned. In this study we investigate the effect of surgical parameters (bony segment movement, osteotomy design) on postop soft tissue changes in a patient cohort. METHODS: Seven patients were retrospectively recruited. Cone beam computed tomography data were obtained and soft tissue and bone shape reconstructions were performed. 3D models were created and surgical cuts were replicated according to postop scans. Each model was imp

Parametric dog-bone-shaped tunable cylindrical fluidic lens.

Tunable spherical fluidic lenses are among the most essential components in adaptive optics. However, fabricating cylindrical tunable lenses has proven more challenging, mainly due to the difficulty in eliminating the defocus component. We demonstrate a parametric approach to minimize the defocus in cylindrical tunable fluidic lenses. We theoretically model and experimentally verify that a dog-bone-shaped tunable cylindrical fluidic lens exhibits almost pure cylindrical performance within the range of ${\pm{\rm 5D}}$ of astigmatism. We anticipate these results will facilitate the use of tunabl

Dynamic Survival Analysis for EHR Data with Personalized Parametric Distributions.

The widespread availability of high-dimensional electronic healthcare record (EHR) datasets has led to significant interest in using such data to derive clinical insights and make risk predictions. More specifically, techniques from machine learning are being increasingly applied to the problem of dynamic survival analysis, where updated time-to-event risk predictions are learned as a function of the full covariate trajectory from EHR datasets. EHR data presents unique challenges in the context of dynamic survival analysis, involving a variety of decisions about data representation, modeling,

The effect of the stenosis location at a coronary arterial bifurcation: a parametric study.

The advances in cardiovascular modelling over the past two decades have given the opportunity to create accurate three dimensional models of the coronary vasculature which, combined with advanced computational fluid dynamics algorithms can shed light to intriguing matters that concern clinicians. One of these issues is the presence of a stenosis near bifurcations in one of the major coronary vessels. In this work, we try to shed light on the aforementioned matter by creating a healthy arterial bifurcation reconstructed using the fusion of Optical Coherence Tomography and X-Ray angiography imag

Parametric study of anterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (APECD).

Anterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (APECD) is a common treatment for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR). In this study, the effects of various channel diameters and approach angles on cervical vertebrae on postoperative outcomes in APECD surgery were explored. A finite element model of intact cervical C3-C7 was constructed and then modified to obtain six surgical models. Range of motion (ROM) and intradiscal pressure (IDP) were calculated under different conditions of flexion (Fle), extension (Ext), lateral bending, and axial rotation. During Fle and bending to the left
