In an effort to develop alternative drugs for the treatment of giardiasis our research group has synthesized and evaluated a novel nitazoxanide and N-methyl-1H-benzimidazole hybrid molecule, named CMC-20. It showed an IC50 of 0.010 μM on Giardia intestinalis, lower than the IC50 values of 0.015, 0.037 and 1.224 μM for nitazoxanide, albendazole and metronidazole, respectively. In addition, we report studies carried out on its mechanism of action and effect at the ultrastructural level on G. intestinalis. The proteomic analysis of trophozoites treated with CMC-20 revealed significant changes in

Ultrastructural studies on Entamoeba histolytica have been carried out mostly with trophozoites cultured for many years. Under these conditions, the availability of nutrients and the absence of environmental stimuli may switch off some phenotypic characteristics of the parasite. As a result, virulence of E. histolytica diminishes with prolonged culture passages, and the ability to form cysts disappears in axenically maintained trophozoites. The present analysis by transmission electron microscopy of trophozoites recovered from experimental amebic liver lesions in hamsters revealed two types of

The effects of subchronic exposure to diethylstilbestrol on the host response to infection with Trichinella spiralis were examined in adult B6C3F1 mice. Expulsion of adult Trichinella from the small bowel, intestinal inflammation and delayed hypersensitivity responses to Trichinella antigens in artificially sensitized mice were investigated. Administration of 8 micrograms/g of diethylstilbestrol for five consecutive days beginning on days -5,0, +3 or +8 of infection inhibited adult worm expulsion and tissue reactions in the small intestine. Expulsion of adult parasites was also delayed in mice

BACKGROUND: Human parasitic infections caused by Adenophorean nematodes encompass a range of diseases, including dioctophymiasis, trichuriasis, capillariasis, trichinellosis, and myositis. These infection can result in adverse impacts on human health and cause societal and economic concerns in tropical and subtropical regions.
METHODS: This review conducted searches in PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar for relevant studies that published in established databases up to April 26, 2024. Studies that focused on the common morphology, life cycle, disease distribution, clinical manifestations, and

Cysticercosis is a parasitic disease caused by infestation with the encysted larval stage of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. Disseminated cysticercosis is an exceptional expression of this disease characterized by high morbidity due to massive symptomatic parasite burden in the central nervous system, striated muscles, subcutaneous tissues and other organs. Less than 50 such cases have been reported worldwide, and fewer than 10 children. We report on the whole-body MR diagnosis of extensively disseminated cysticercosis in a child. The critical role of whole-body MR as a stand-alone modality

Studies on distribution of parasites are important to reveal the ecology of host-parasites interactions. The objective of the study was to compare the variations in heterophyid encysted metacercariae (EMC) infection in freshwater and brackishwater fish hosts and variation in parasitological descriptors of metacercariae infection during different seasons. The status of infection with heterophyid EMCs in the second intermediate host fishes from brackishand freshwater resources was investigated. Seasonal changes in the occurrence of EMCs in different fish hosts were monitored in a longitudinal fi

Immunodepression phenomena in infections with protozoan and metazoan parasites have raised a great deal of interest because of the apparent lack of immunological control in a primary infection. Therefore, this phenomenon has been proposed as a working hypothesis to explain the successful association. However, the role that immunodepression can play in parasitic infections as a mechanism to assure an equilibrium between the host and its parasite has never been evaluated. The immunodepression to SRBC in Trichinella-infected mice was removed by treating mice with low doses of cyclophosphamide (CY

Amphibian populations around the world are facing threats that include disease and pollution. Although the effect of environmental contaminants on susceptibility to infection has been demonstrated for several amphibian species, to our knowledge, the opposite interaction, infection status affecting contaminant susceptibility, has not been studied. We conducted standard 48-h toxicity tests to compare susceptibility to malathion, a widely used organophosphate insecticide, of uninfected pickerel frog (Rana palustris) tadpoles and tadpoles infected with two levels (10 or 30 cercariae) of the tremat

BACKGROUND: Curcumin is an active compound derived from turmeric, Curcuma longa, and is known for its benefits to human health. The amoebicidal activity of curcumin against Acanthamoeba triangularis was recently discovered. However, a physiological change of intracellular pathways related to A. triangularis encystation mechanism, including autophagy in the surviving amoeba after curcumin treatment, has never been reported. This study aims to investigate the effect of curcumin on the survival of A. triangularis under nutrient starvation and nutrient-rich condition, as well as to evaluate the A.

Parasites that rely on trophic transmission can manipulate the behavior of an intermediate host to compromise the host's antipredator competence and increase the probability of reaching the next host. Selection for parasite manipulation is diminished when there is significant risk of host death to causes other than consumption by a suitable definitive host for the parasite. Consequently, behavioral manipulation by parasites can be expected to be subtle. Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus (Op) is a trematode parasite that has a bird-snail-fish host life cycle. Fathead minnows are a common interme

Histopathological lesions caused by plerocercoids of Triaenophorus nodulosus within the liver of perch, Perca fluviatilis, from Lake Trasimeno were studied. Livers harbored 1-3 parasite larvae and pathological alterations were more marked in those with 3 plerocercoids. In the liver, larvae were encysted, surrounded by a capsule of host tissue; two of 14 plerocercoids were necrotic. In infected livers, some hepatocytes showed degenerative changes, i.e. swelling and hydropic degeneration, notably those in close proximity to larvae. By comparison, hepatocytes in uninfected livers or in regions aw

A comparison has been made of the interactions between passively transferred and actively acquired immunity in regulating populations of Taenia hydatigena and T. ovis. When ewes were grazed prior to parturition under a high infection pressure, immunity was transferred to their offspring for up to 8 weeks. A qualitative difference between the species was the destruction of larval T. ovis prior to their establishment ('pre-encystment immunity') and that of T. hydatigena after they had become established ('post-encystment immunity') in the challenged lambs. The major difference in terms of popula

Nematodes of the family Cystidicolidae Skryabin, 1946 represent a complex group of parasites of aquatic organisms. They are present in freshwater, estuarine, and marine environments, with fish as intermediate, paratenic, and definitive hosts. This study adds relevant data on the morphology, morphometry, and parasitic ecology of third-stage larvae of Pseudoproleptus Khera, 1953 in fish consumed by riverside populations in the Amazon. A total of 92 fish specimens were acquired between March 2024 and January 2025 from artisanal fishing, distributed among five species: Astronotus ocellatus; Cichla

Ocular toxoplasmosis, which is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is the leading cause of retinochoroiditis. Toxoplasma is an obligate intracellular pathogen that replicates within a parasitophorous vacuole. Infections are initiated by digestion of parasites deposited in cat feces or in undercooked meat. Parasites then disseminate to target tissues that include the retina where they then develop into long-lived asymptomatic tissue cysts. Occasionally, cysts reactivate and growth of newly emerged parasites must be controlled by the host's immune system or disease will occur. Th

Therapeutic failure in Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is largely driven by the high resistance of cysts to antimicrobial agents. However, the development of effective cysticidal drugs is hindered by the lack of standardized in vitro encystation protocols. Inconsistencies in induction methods can produce immature cells that lack the structural defenses of mature clinical walls, potentially leading to false-positive results in drug screening. This study aims to evaluate the impact of cyst maturity on drug resistance assays by systematically comparing two common liquid media-glucose-supplemented PBS

Fasciola hepatica, a leaf shaped trematode that is common in cattle, sheep and goats, is acquired by eating raw water plants like watercress or drinking water infected with the encysted form of the parasite. The varied clinical presentations of fascioliasis still make a high index of suspicion mandatory. Besides having a wide spectrum of hepatobiliary symptoms like obstructive jaundice, cholangitis and liver cirrhosis, the parasitic infection also has extrabiliary manifestations. Until recently, extrahepatic fascioliasis has been reported in the subcutaneous tissue, brain, lungs, epididymis, i

Neurocysticercosis results when the ingested eggs of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, hatch into larval forms that penetrate the gut wall, disseminate hematogenously, and then encyst in the brain. The subsequent symptoms and associated morbidity are variable. Worldwide, cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system, but it is not a common autopsy finding in the United States. Neurocysticercosis may be an incidental finding, a contributing cause of death, or the underlying cause of death. It is also important for the forensic pathologist to be aware of

Neurocysticercosis is a pathology that we are finding nowadays over the immigrant population. It is produced by the Taenia solium parasite when it encyst into the central nervous system. The most frequent clinic is the focal crisis though it can come up as a general crisis; hydrocephalus, intracranial hypertension and even encephalitis can also happen. Its diagnosis is mainly based on imaging methods. The treatment is still controversial and must be individualized. The indication of antiparasitic drugs like albendazole and praziquantel has to be considered depending on the viability of the par

The development of alkaline phosphatase during invasion and encystment of Trichinella spiralis in rat skeletal muscle fibres was studied at the ultrastructural level. On day 14 after infection, the enzymatic activity is found in proliferating parts of the T-tubular system and in parts of the plasmalemma. In cells, in which a strong hyperplasia of this system is noted. AlPase is present in the abundant network of stratified and concentric membranes from which a large number of pinocytic vesicles arise. From day 50 till 1 year after infection the enzyme activity was invariably present in the mat
