This survey was conducted between December, 1997 and August, 1998 at the Chantal Biya Maternity Section of the Ebolowa Provincial Hospital, Cameroon. A total of 231 parturient mothers who gave birth to 232 neonates were included in the study. Ninety-five of them (41.1%) took anti-malaria prophylaxis (chloroquine) in the index pregnancy, and 136 (58.9%) did not. Both groups were similar with respect to socio-demographic characteristics except for educational level of the mother, which was significantly higher in the group on prophylaxis (chi 2 = 8.05; df = 2, p = 0.02). The overall prevalence o

Previous work in Papua New Guinea has shown considerable variation in egg counts between different people infected with Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi, although individual egg loads remained relatively constant over a 14-month period. Possible explanations include genetic predisposition, a surprising longevity of the worms, or external auto-infection. We have now analysed the pedigrees of 177 individuals for whom egg counts were available, and find no evidence for polygenic inheritance of factors related to egg counts. The use of genetic models postulating the segregation of a single unknown

Infection with L. donovani affects mainly visceral organs. Importantly, the parasitic load differs in different visceral organs; therefore there is a need to understand the organ specific immune regulation, particularly in the spleen and liver. Comparative studies between these organs in Leishmania infected hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) are lacking. Our study highlights the importance of eicosanoids in the organ specific pathology of visceral leishmaniasis. Among other immune cells, macrophages (mφ) which harbor Leishmania parasite are major producers of eicosanoids. In this study, we intend

Histological lesions and the presence of Leishmania spp. amastigotes in claw tissues were investigated in 40 dogs with leishmaniosis, with (16/40--group A) or without (24/40--group B) generalized onychogryphosis. Following euthanasia, the entire third phalanx with intact claw was amputated, formalin fixed, decalcified in a formic acid solution, embedded in paraffin, sectioned longitudinally and stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and acid orcein-Giemsa. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for the detection of Leishmania amastigotes. Lichenoid mononuclear infiltration (all dogs in

A flow cytometric method for the quantification of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in stool specimens was developed to replace conventional microscopic immunofluorescent assays. Fecal pellets were collected from control (uninfected) severe combined immune-deficient mice, suspended in 2.5% potassium dichromate at a ratio of 400 microliter per pellet, and homogenized by vortexing. Purified oocytes were added to the samples (10(5), 10(4), 10(3), and 10(2)/ml). Aliquots (200 microliters) of the vortexed samples were centrifuged over microscale discontinuous sucrose gradients. The oocyst-containing

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an infectious vector-borne disease caused by protozoa of the Leishmania genus that affects humans and animals. The distribution of parasites in the lesion is not uniform, and there are divergences in the literature about the choice of the better sampling site for diagnosis-inner or outer edge of the ulcerated skin lesion. In this context, determining the region of the lesion with the highest parasite density and, consequently, the appropriate site for collecting samples can define the success of the laboratory diagnosis. Hence, this study aims to com

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis is caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum and little is known about the occurrence and pathogenesis of this parasite in the CNS. The aims of this study were to evaluate the occurrence, viability and load of L. infantum in the CNS, and to identify the neurological histological alterations associated with this protozoan and its co-infections in naturally infected dogs. Forty-eight Leishmania-seropositive dogs from which L. infantum was isolated after necropsy were examined. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were analyzed by parasitological culture, quantitati

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a skin disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania. Few studies have assessed the influence of the sample collection site within the ulcer and the sampling method on the sensitivity of parasitological and molecular diagnostic techniques for CL. Sensitivity of the technique can be dependent upon the load and distribution of Leishmania amastigotes in the lesion.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We applied a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for Leishmania (Viannia) minicircle kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) detection and parasite load quantificati

BACKGROUND: Current diagnostic methods for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) have low sensitivity or are not useful for treatment follow-up. We previously described the quantitative nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (QT-NASBA) method as a sensitive and specific assay for detection and quantification of Leishmania parasites in skin biopsies. This assay could be a valuable instrument for monitoring response to treatment of CL and identifying treatment failures at an early stage.
AIM: QT-NASBA results of skin biopsies at the end and 6 weeks after treatment from patients with proven CL on vari

The common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is one of the most abundant small cetaceans along the Galician coast and a definitive host for the nematode parasite Anisakis, which is transmitted to cetaceans through the food chain. This study aimed to analyse which factors, including dolphin diet, affect the parasitic load. Samples of stomach contents from stranded dolphins along the Galician coast (2004-2024) were examined. The number of parasites was counted, and the contribution of different prey species to the diet was analysed based on hard remains. Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) were used to

Amniotic fluid DNA samples were genotyped by multilocus-nested-PCR-RFLP, but only three of 11 markers amplified 113 of 122 (92.6%) samples, resulting in 12 untyped and 101 partial non-archetypal genotypes. The 101 typed samples were subdivided into four groups: G1 with 73 samples (5'and 3' SAG2 allele I + SAG3 allele III + GRA6 allele III), 53 had parasite load ≤ 102 parasites/mL (43 asymptomatic, 10 mild infections), 17 had load > 102 and ≤ 103 (one mild, 13 moderate and three severe), and three had load > 103 parasites/mL (three severe); G2 with 22 samples (5'and 3' SAG2 allele I + SAG3 alle

BACKGROUND: The potential reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in South Asia include asymptomatic and relapsed cases of VL, along with patients with post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). Accordingly, accurate estimation of their parasite load is pivotal for ensuring disease elimination, presently targeted for 2023. Serological tests cannot accurately detect relapses and/or monitor treatment effectiveness, and therefore, parasite antigen/nucleic acid based detection assays remain the only viable option. An excellent option is the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) but the

BACKGROUND: An important issue associated with the control of visceral leishmaniasis is the need to identify and understand the relevance of asymptomatic infection caused by Leishmania infantum. The aim of this study was to follow the course of asymptomatic L. infantum infection in children in an area of Brazil where it is endemic. The children were assessed twice during a 12-month period.
METHODOLOGY: In this population study, 1875 children, ranging from 6 months to 7 years of age, were assessed. Blood samples were collected on filter papers via finger prick and tested by ELISA (L. infantum

Micronutrient deficiencies are associated with impaired growth and cognitive function. A school-based fortification program might benefit schoolchildren but a high prevalence of parasite infestation might affect effectiveness. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 2 × 2 factorial trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of multi-micronutrient fortified biscuits with or without de-worming on growth, cognitive function, and parasite load in Vietnamese schoolchildren. Schoolchildren (n = 510), 6-8 years of age were randomly allocated to receive albendazole or placebo at baseline and fo

BACKGROUND: Varroa destructor remains the most significant biotic threat to honey bee colonies, and increasing resistance to synthetic acaricides necessitates alternative control strategies. This study compared four season-long Varroa management strategies that differed in spring drone-brood management and late-summer treatment strategy: (i) synthetic treatment without drone-brood removal; (ii) the organic Baden-Württemberg (BW) concept; (iii) an integrated oxalic acid 'split and treat' strategy; and (iv) brood availability manipulation (BAM), a biotechnical strategy combining systematic drone

Small ruminant production plays a crucial role in rural livelihoods and food security in Mali but is constrained by infectious diseases, parasitic infections, poor nutrition, and limited preventive healthcare. This study evaluated the effect of implementing a herd health package on the productivity, parasite load, and disease incidence in small ruminant herds in the Farakala commune, Sikasso region, Mali. This package included regular, targeted deworming campaigns, vaccination against Peste des Petits Ruminants, and training for livestock farmers on best practices regarding feeding, hygiene, h

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium–soil-transmitted helminth (STH) coinfection poses a significant public health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Despite the high prevalence of both infections, limited evidence exists on their interaction, particularly regarding parasitemia and anemia across different age groups. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap and inform integrated control strategies in coendemic settings. METHODOLOGY: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 220 participants attending health facilities in Dilla zuria, Southern Ethiopia with 110 with Plasmodium

In the fight against malaria, transmission blocking interventions (TBIs) such as transmission blocking vaccines or drugs, are promising approaches to complement conventional tools. They aim to prevent the infection of vectors and thereby reduce the subsequent exposure of a human population to infectious mosquitoes. The effectiveness of these approaches has been shown to depend on the initial intensity of infection in mosquitoes, often measured as the mean number of oocysts resulting from an infectious blood meal in absence of intervention. In mosquitoes exposed to a high intensity of infection

BACKGROUND: CL endemicity was reported worldwide including in Saudi Arabia, imposing a major challenge on the health authorities. Vitamin D and its receptor (VDR) are key modulators of the immune response where the VDR is expressed. A remarkable lack of data exists in humans about the contribution of vitamin D and polymorphisms of the VDR gene in protozoan infections, especially cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL).
OBJECTIVE: This is the first work conducted to assess the relationship between vitamin D status, polymorphisms of the VDR gene (BsmI, ApaI, TaqI, and FokI), and VDR haplotype with parasit

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes in the urinary system and their correlation with serum biochemical parameters, parasite load and immunodetection of amastigotes in 30 dogs infected naturally by Leishmania infantum. The major histological changes were glomerulonephritis and interstitial nephritis. Serum biochemistry demonstrated that the dogs had progressive loss of renal function. L. infantum amastigotes were detected immunohistochemically in all parts of the urinary system, except the ureters. There was a correlation between parasite load, severity of histop
