Experimental study to localize the neurons projecting to the lamb retractor penis muscle.

Aim of the present study was to locate the neurons projecting to the lamb retractor penis muscle, a smooth muscle associated to the penis. The retrograde neuronal tracer Fast Blue was injected into the bulbopenile portion of the left retractor penis muscle. Labelled cells were found bilaterally in the S2-S4 spinal ganglia, from the last two lumbar (L5-L6 or L6-L7) to S4 sympathetic trunk ganglia and in the hypogastric and pelvic plexuses. Fast blue-positive (FB+) neurons were also found in the intermediate gray substance in the S1-S4 segments of the spinal cord. Our research enables us to desc

Acute Physiological Responses to Four Running Sessions Performed at Different Intensity Zones.

This study investigated acute responses and post 24-h recovery to four running sessions performed at different intensity zones by supine heart rate variability, countermovement jump, and a submaximal running test. A total of 24 recreationally endurance-trained male subjects performed 90 min low-intensity (LIT), 30 min moderate-intensity (MOD), 6×3 min high-intensity interval (HIIT) and 10×30 s supramaximal-intensity interval (SMIT) exercises on a treadmill. Heart rate variability decreased acutely after all sessions, and the decrease was greater after MOD compared to LIT and SMIT (p<0.001; p<0

Spectral characteristics of atrial electrograms in sinus rhythm correlates with sites of ganglionated plexuses in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: To verify whether spectral components of atrial electrograms (AE) during sinus rhythm (SR) correlate with cardiac ganglionated plexus (GP) sites. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen patients undergoing atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation were prospectively enrolled. Prior to radio frequency application, endocardial AE were recorded with a sequential point-by-point approach. Electrical stimuli were delivered at 20 Hz, amplitude 100 V, and pulse width of 4 ms. A vagal response was defined as a high-frequency stimulation (HFS) evoked atrioventricular block or a prolongation of RR interval. Spectra

Urodynamics and bladder muscarinic receptors in rats with cerebral infarction and bladder outlet obstruction.

We characterized muscarinic receptor binding and urodynamic parameters in rats with cerebral infarction and chronic bladder outlet obstruction as models of detrusor overactivity. Bladder weight showed little significant difference between the cerebral-infarcted and sham rats, but the bladder weight was about three times greater in the bladder outlet-obstructed rats. Bladder capacity and voided volume were significantly lower (36.7 and 55.1%, respectively) in the cerebral-infarcted than in the sham rats. Involuntary contractions before micturition were seen in the bladder outlet-obstructed rats

Neurotransmitter influence on human meibomian gland epithelial cells.

PURPOSE: A striking characteristic of the human meibomian gland is its rich sensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic innervation, yet the functional relevance of these nerve fibers remains unknown. Acting on the hypothesis that neurotransmitters are released in the vicinity of the gland, act on glandular receptors, and influence the production, secretion, and/or delivery of meibomian gland secretions to the ocular surface, the goal in this study was to begin to determine whether neurotransmitters influence the meibomian gland. METHODS: Immortalized human meibomian gland epithelial (SLHMG) ce

Incidence of pre- and postoperative urinary dysfunction associated with deep infiltrating endometriosis: relevance of urodynamic tests and therapeutic implications.

Although many series have been published on the management of digestive or urinary deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE), few data exist on pre- and postoperative urinary dysfunction (UD) and urodynamic tests. Hence, the objective of this review was to evaluate the pre- and postoperative incidence of UD and the contribution of urodynamic tests as well as their therapeutic implications. Studies published between January 1995 and April 2012, available in the databases Medline, Embase or the Cochrane Library and responding to a key word algorithm were selected. Studies were classified according t

Arachnoid cyst causing third cranial nerve palsy manifesting as isolated internal ophthalmoplegia and iris cholinergic supersensitivity.

An 8-month-old boy presented with anisocoria, a sluggishly reactive right pupil, and cholinergic supersensitivity as the only signs of what proved months later to be compressive third cranial nerve palsy due to an arachnoid cyst. Tonic constriction and dilation, segmental iris sphincter palsy, aberrant regeneration phenomena, ductional deficits, and ptosis were absent. The initial diagnosis was postganglionic internal ophthalmoplegia attributed to a viral ciliary ganglionopathy. Nineteen months later, he had developed an incomitant exodeviation and a supraduction deficit. Brain MRI revealed a

Peptidergic sensory and parasympathetic fiber sprouting in the mucosa of the rat urinary bladder in a chronic model of cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis.

In this study, we used a well-established animal model to investigate changes in the peptidergic and parasympathetic innervation of the bladder following chronic bladder inflammation. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with either 70 mg/kg cyclophosphamide diluted in saline, i.p., once every 3 days or saline. After 10 days, all animals were tested for urinary frequency and number of low volume voids, as well as symptoms of spontaneous pain. At the end of 12 days, all animals were perfused with histological fixatives and the urinary bladders processed for immunofluorescence using an

Pupillographic findings in 39 consecutive cases of harlequin syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Harlequin syndrome is a curious phenomenon in which one half of the face fails to flush during thermal or emotional stress as a result of damage to vasodilator sympathetic fibers. Anecdotal reports suggest that some of these patients have abnormal pupils. In this study we set out to systematically investigate autonomic pupil disturbances in an unselected cohort of patients with harlequin syndrome. METHODS: A consecutive series of 39 patients with harlequin syndrome who were referred to a tertiary autonomic function laboratory underwent slit-lamp examinations, testing of deep tendo

Optogenetic and pharmacological evidence that somatostatin-GABA neurons are important regulators of parasympathetic outflow to the stomach.

KEY POINTS: The dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) in the brainstem consists primarily of vagal preganglionic neurons that innervate postganglionic neurons of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The activity of the vagal preganglionic neurons is predominantly regulated by GABAergic transmission in the DMV. The present findings indicate that the overwhelming GABAergic drive present at the DMV is primarily from somatostatin positive GABA (Sst-GABA) DMV neurons. Activation of both melanocortin and μ-opioid receptors at the DMV inhibits Sst-GABA DMV neurons. Sst-GABA DMV neurons may serve as in

The GABAA agonist muscimol attenuates induced airway constriction in guinea pigs in vivo.

GABA(A) channels are ubiquitously expressed on neuronal cells and act via an inward chloride current to hyperpolarize the cell membrane of mature neurons. Expression and function of GABA(A) channels on airway smooth muscle cells has been demonstrated in vitro. Airway smooth muscle cell membrane hyperpolarization contributes to relaxation. We hypothesized that muscimol, a selective GABA(A) agonist, could act on endogenous GABA(A) channels expressed on airway smooth muscle to attenuate induced increases in airway pressures in anesthetized guinea pigs in vivo. In an effort to localize muscimol's

Calpain Inhibition Improves Erectile Function in a Rat Model of Cavernous Nerve Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) after cavernous nerve (CN) injury remains difficult to treat. Calpain plays a critical role in causing neurodegenerative diseases. This study aimed to evaluate whether calpain inhibition preserves erectile function in a rat model of CN injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats underwent sham surgery or CN crush injury. The CN-crushed rats were treated with vehicle or MDL-28170, a specific calpain inhibitor. At 1, 2, 3, and 7 days post-surgery, major pelvic ganglia (MPG) were harvested, followed by the measurement of erectile function, respectively. At 28 days

Differential effects of cervical vagosympathetic and mediastinal nerve activation on atrial arrhythmia formation in dogs.

To investigate the influence of the thoracic autonomic neuronal hierarchy on atrial arrhythmia formation, we compared the characteristics of atrial tachyarrhythmias induced by electrical stimulation of 1) the right vagosympathetic nerve complex at the cervical level and 2) the more caudal juxta-cardiac mediastinal nerves located on the anterior surface of the superior vena cava. Unipolar electrograms were recorded from 191 sites on the entire epicardial atrial surface and, in some experiments, from 63 right atrial endocardial sites. The sites of origin of initial beats at the onset of atrial t

Remodeling of the guinea pig intrinsic cardiac plexus with chronic pressure overload.

Chronic pressure overload (PO) is associated with cardiac hypertrophy and altered autonomic control of cardiac function, in which the latter may involve adaptations in central and/or peripheral cardiac neural control mechanisms. To evaluate the specific remodeling of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system following pressure overload, the descending thoracic aorta artery of the guinea pig was constricted approximately 20%, and the animals recovered for 9 wk. Thereafter, atrial neurons of the intrinsic cardiac plexus were isolated for electrophysiological and immunohistochemical analyses. Intracel

Nitric oxide and release of the peptide VIP from parasympathetic terminals in the submandibular gland of the anaesthetized cat.

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in mediating various submandibular responses to stimulation of the parasympathetic innervation has been investigated in anaesthetized cats, in which N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 30 mg kg-1 I.A.) was used to block the synthesis of NO. L-NAME significantly reduced the vasodilator response and the flow of saliva, together with the output of salivary protein that occurred during stimulation of the chorda lingual nerve (20 Hz for 1 s at 10 s intervals), without significantly reducing the output of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) from the gland.
