BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus infection is a global crisis that represents a serious health threat, particularly among younger people. Various studies show that both orphan and non-orphan adolescents and youths experience vulnerability to HIV. Nevertheless, the findings hitherto are mixed and inconclusive. The aim of this study, therefore, was to assess the prevalence of parental death and its association with multiple sexual partners among secondary school students for evidence based interventions.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among secondary school youth in Addi

Background: Parents who have lost their children to death often experience high levels of grief and depression. However, studies on the grief and depression experienced by parents who have lost an adult child to cancer are scarce. Objectives: To clarify the risk and characteristics of grief and depression in parents who have lost an adult child to cancer. Design: A nationwide mortality follow-back survey was conducted in Japan with participants identified using death certificate data for cancer. Between February 2019 and February 2020, a questionnaire was distributed to 110,990 bereaved family

Lung adenocarcinoma often carries driver mutations, such as EGFR mutations, which are effectively targeted by EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) like osimertinib, a third-generation EGFR-TKI approved for treating T790M and other EGFR-activating mutations. However, the development of adaptive drug resistance remains a major challenge and is associated with poor prognosis in cancer therapy. Ganoderma microsporum immunomodulatory protein (GMI) has demonstrated anticancer properties in various cancers and exhibits synergistic cytotoxic effects when combined with several anticancer drugs.

BACKGROUND: Globally, around 2.6 million neonatal deaths occur world-wide every year and the numbers of stillbirths is almost similar. Pakistan is ranked among the highest countries in the world for neonatal mortality. In 2016, for every 1000 babies born in Pakistan, 46 died before the end of the first month of life. Also, Pakistan had the highest rate of stillbirths (43.1/1000 births) in 2015. To meet sustainable development (SDG) targets of reducing neonatal mortality and stillbirths, it is essential to gain understanding about the causes of neonatal death and stillbirths. In Pakistan, full

BACKGROUND: In the US, ~60,000 people <25 years old die annually. Forty-five percent of pediatric deaths occur traumatically, and the parents' or caregivers' (hereafter 'parents') sole contact with the healthcare system is often the coroner or medical examiner (ME). Parents experience mental and physical health problems following their child's death. There are no evidence-based interventions for MEs supporting bereaved parents. Scalable, systems-level interventions are needed to connect bereaved parents to grief and social care support. This research will build upon the experience of Missing P

BACKGROUND: Information on exact causes of death and stillbirth are limited in low and middle income countries. Minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) is increasingly practiced in place of autopsy across several settings. A formative research documented the experiences of counselling and consenting for MITS in north India.
METHODS: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Delhi. During the early implementation of MITS, observations of the counselling and consenting process (n = 13) for under-five child death and stillbirths were conducted. In-depth in

The prevalence and magnitude of effect of individual risk markers for specific developmental disorders vary widely across diagnostic category. The four study cohorts for this project were patients from four diagnostic registries in North Dakota for fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), autism, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and Tourette syndrome. These four cohorts were used to estimate prevalence and magnitude of effect of parental risk markers in patients with developmental disabilities. Cases with North Dakota birth certificates were matched with controls. Using birth certificate data, we the

Parental death in childhood is a traumatic event and, as a consequence, bereaved children can be at an increased risk of developing mental health issues in adulthood. This article details an extended literature review that was undertaken to explore the effects of early parental death on bereaved children's mental health and identifies implications for healthcare practice. Several electronic databases were searched and eight articles were selected for inclusion in this review. Four themes were identified from the literature: child's age at parental death; cause of parental death; type of parent

IMPORTANCE: Prevalence of childhood parental death varies by race and ethnicity and socioeconomic status, yet whether similar variation persists in the association with lifetime psychiatric disorder is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether race and ethnicity and parental educational attainment are associated with the risk of death of a parent; to determine whether the risk for lifetime psychiatric disorder associated with death of a parent was moderated by race and ethnicity and highest parental educational attainment; and to examine a potential intersection of race and ethnicity with parenta

BackgroundEarly life adversities can have lifelong consequences for health, including for cognitive functioning and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Moreover, early-life disadvantages stemming from parental death and divorce have been linked with later life social, mental, and physical well-being outcomes, including social isolation. Therefore, loneliness stands out as an intervenable aspect of well-being that may mediate long-term consequences of early life exposure to parental death and divorce for midlife and older adults' cognitive decline.ObjectiveThe present study aims to deter

OBJECTIVES: Evidence indicates that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have destructive impacts on quality of life, health outcomes, and health-care expenditures. Studies further demonstrate a dose-response relationship between the number of ACEs and risk for experiencing chronic illness, such as oral diseases later in life. Research is scarce on the prioritization of contextualized public health interventions addressing this important threat.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 2011 to 2012 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) provided a nationally representative sample of children i

Prescription drug misuse is a growing public health concern and has been understudied in Latino populations. The current study tests the relationships between childhood and family characteristics and prescriptions drug misuse among adult Latinos. A subsample of 8,308 Latinos from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) were examined. Logistic regression analyses tested associations between parental alcoholism, parental divorce before age 18, and parental death before age 18 and prescription drug misuse and prescription drug use disorder. Parental alcoholism

OBJECTIVE: Although the death of a parent is one of the most significant stressors a child can experience, the psychiatric sequelae of parental death are not fully understood.
METHOD: A total of 360 parent-bereaved children (ages 6-17) and their surviving parents were directly interviewed four times during the first 2 years following the death (at 2, 6, 13, and 25 months). Data collection occurred from 1989 to 1996. Psychiatric symptomatology was compared among the bereaved children, 110 depressed children, and 128 community control children and their informant parents. Additional analyses ex

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To describe the contribution of social conditions for the main causes of injury deaths in Swedish children and youth aged 5-25 years.
DESIGN: Cohort study. All children below 15 years of age that resided in Sweden 1985 were followed up during 1991-1995. Injury deaths were recorded from The National Cause of Death Register. Information on parental social determinants were collected from various national registers. Connections between the social determinants and an injury death outcome were analysed in multivariate Cox regression models.
MAIN RESULTS: In total 1474 injury deat

BACKGROUND: It is important for those called upon to discuss major social determinants of health such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to have accurate knowledge about generational trends in their prevalence.
OBJECTIVE: To review available trend data on major forms of ACEs.
METHODS: A search of academic data bases was conducted by combining the term "trend" with a variety of terms referring to childhood adversities.
RESULTS: Available trend data on ACEs from the 20th century show multi-decade declines in parental death, parental illness, sibling death, and poverty, but multi-decade i

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and mental health impacts of parental loss in children and adolescents under 18 years.
METHOD: A nationally representative sample of households with children aged 4-17 years was recruited in 2013-2014, with 6,310 parents/carers of eligible households (response rate = 55%). Primary carers completed a questionnaire about biological parental loss (death, incarceration, separation) and mental health disorders.
RESULTS: At 17 years, 0.3% had a parent in custody, 2.5% had a biological parent die, 31.8% had separated parents, and 37.8% were not living with bot

Although data from animal studies show that early rearing experiences can have lasting effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, little is known about the relationship between childhood parental loss and adult cortisol levels in humans. In the current study, 57 healthy adult men completed a telephone interview concerning parental loss or separations before age 17. Salivary cortisol measures, taken 10 times a day for 5 days in the daily environment, were available from an earlier study. Nine subjects had experienced the death of a parent during childhood. Compared to levels in 3

BACKGROUND: Early adverse experiences such as sexual, verbal, or physical abuse and parental neglect have been associated with a higher risk of weight or eating problems in adulthood, and death or prolonged separation from parents during childhood has been implicated as a correlate of adult psychiatric disorders that are widely represented in obese subjects seeking bariatric surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the rate of childhood parental loss in obese bariatric surgery candidates and explore its association with a psychiatric diagnosis and clinical and weight/eating-re

The Model Project for Child Death Review (CDR) was initiated in Japan, but parental consent is required for detailed investigations. We proposed an alternative method to review child deaths using death certificates and forensic autopsy results when parental consent is not provided. We extracted and reviewed death certificates for the deceased younger than 18 years from among all certificates submitted in Shiga Prefecture between 2015 and 2017. In addition, we analyzed autopsy records in cases that underwent forensic autopsy. The prevalence of each cause of death was compared among age groups.
