Fertile Ground in the OR: Rewriting the Narrative on Family in Plastic Surgery Training.

This editorial discusses the possibility of family life and plastic surgery residency successfully coexisting when training programs intentionally foster supportive cultures, flexible policies, and equitable parental leave. Drawing on personal experiences from a highly family-friendly program, together with emerging literature on pregnancy, parenthood, childcare, and career advancement in surgery, we challenge the notion that residents must choose between surgical excellence and family life. Some practical strategies, including shared workload, flexible scheduling, lactation support, peer ment

Women in surgery: Perspectives from Nordic welfare states.

Surgery has long been shaped by gender imbalance, but the Nordic countries-Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden-illustrate how societal structures can support women's participation in demanding medical careers. Policies promoting gender equality, including tuition-free education, publicly funded childcare, and generous parental leave shared between parents, have reduced structural barriers to surgical training and practice. Cultural expectations that men participate actively in family and domestic responsibilities further support balanced professional and personal roles. Most medical

Love and loss. Conversations with parents of babies with spinal bifida managed without surgery, 1971-1981.

Looking back over the span of years surveyed, it appears that a sad experience, even many years ago, commonly leaves residual pain. This can be modified by sympathetic support enabling parents and baby to interact, although such interaction is not without painful as well as pleasurable effects. Coming to terms with loss may take longer than was previously thought. This study highlights the need for bereavement care, which aims to leave families with positive rather than negative feelings. Perhaps, for mental health, the eventual feelings about past happenings are more important than the happen

Prevalence and correlates of postsecondary residential status among young adults with an autism spectrum disorder.

This study examined the prevalence and correlates of three living arrangements (with a parent or guardian, independently or with a roommate, or in a supervised setting) among a nationally representative sample of postsecondary young adults with an autism spectrum disorder. We assessed living arrangements since leaving high school. Compared with young adults with other disability types (learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or emotional disturbances), those with an autism spectrum disorder were more likely to have lived with a parent or guardian and least likely ever to have lived i

Physically violent mothers are a reason for young people's leaving home.

In a qualitative study, 302 homeless young people (aged 12 to 20 years) were asked to discuss their reasons for leaving home. Some 103 youth cited physical violence by a parent or stepparent, and of these, 39 cited their mother's or stepmother's violence as the reason for leaving home. Females were more likely than males to report being the target of violence by their mother; however, the converse was true for stepmothers. Several discrete reasons for maternal violence were identified, including maternal personal characteristics and behaviors, issues associated with blended families, or young

Navigating childhood fever: A registry-based analysis of parental engagement patterns and information needs in mHealth.

BACKGROUND: Acute childhood fever can lead to parental anxiety which contributes to the overcrowding of pediatric emergency care. Mobile health (mHealth) applications offer support to empower caregivers. Real-world evidence regarding usage disparities and their actual impact on user empowerment remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This observational study investigates the sociodemographic determinants of mHealth usage and evaluates its effect on parental confidence as parent-reported outcome measure (PROM). METHODS: A FeverApp registry data analysis was conducted. An ecological momentary assessment to

Obstetricians' attitudes and opinions on sickness absence and benefits during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, sick leave is taken more frequently by pregnant women than by nonpregnant women. This led us to ask if the taking of sick leave during pregnancy could possibly be explained by attitudes to sickness absence held among obstetricians working in antenatal care. METHODS: All obstetricians (n = 45) engaged in public antenatal care and at work in May 2001 in seven hospitals in South Eastern Sweden were asked to anonymously respond to questions/statements concerning their work; 87% participated. The results were presented as percent (the median value) on a visual analog scale.

Canadian women in otolaryngology: head and neck surgery part 2-challenges in family planning, fertility, and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature demonstrates that female surgeons face difficulties in family planning, meeting breastfeeding goals, leadership and advancement opportunities. These issues have received limited attention in Canadian surgeons despite different maternity leave patterns compared to the general Canadian population. We sought to describe the experience of otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons in family planning, fertility, and lactation and to identify the role of gender and career stage in these experiences. METHODS: A RedCAP® survey was disseminated to Canadian otolaryngology-h

Chastising a child--the legal position.

Chastisement of children can take many forms, some of which could be offences under law. If the child was afraid of a physical attack because the parent was shouting at them, this could constitute an assault. A parent or other adult could face a charge of battery for physically striking a child. Under English law, reasonable chastisement is a defence available to a parent who may face legal prosecution for the action they take against their child. This article reviews the nature of chastisement and the current legal situation using relevant cases and related legislation. At present, a parent i

ABM Position Statement: Paid Maternity Leave-Importance to Society, Breastfeeding, and Sustainable Development.

Background: Paid maternity leave benefits all of society, reducing infant mortality and providing economic gains. It is endorsed by international treaties. Paid maternity leave is important for breastfeeding, bonding, and recovery from childbirth. Not all mothers have access to adequate paid maternity leave. Key Information: Paid leave helps meet several of the 17 United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10), including fostering economic growth. A family's expenses will rise with the arrival of an infant. Paid leave is often granted with partial pay. Many low-wage work

New directions in orphan and vulnerable children policy and research: A focus on supporting "suitable" institutions when placement is "necessary" for a child.

As the number of children without parental care continues to increase in resource-poor countries, it is important not to discount institutional care as an option before conclusively assessing whether these structures have systematic negative impacts on the millions of children for which they provide care. An almost universal emphasis and focus on deinstitutionalizing children in the face of the urgent necessity for large-scale measures to care for the global orphaned population puts millions of children at risk of deprivation, degradation, and early death. Deinstitutionalizing children in unde

Psychiatric outcomes and long-term school and work-related disability in offspring of parents with depression and treatment-resistant depression.

PURPOSE: To investigate the risk for adverse outcomes among offspring of parents with depression and with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), compared with matched offspring in the general population. METHODS: Parents diagnosed with depression in specialized psychiatric care in 2006-2018 were identified in nation-wide Swedish registers. Those starting a third sequential antidepressant trial were defined as treatment-resistant. Parents and their 2,359 first-born offspring, aged 6-15 years when parents were defined with TRD, were closely matched 1:1 with parent-offspring pairs with other pare

Anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors: a comparison of anxious mothers and fathers.

The majority of research identifying anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors has been conducted with mothers, leaving a gap in current knowledge about the role of fathers' parenting behaviors. In an attempt to fill this gap, this study compared anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors of anxious mothers and fathers. Parents completed self-report measures of parenting behavior and independent coders rated parenting behaviors (i.e., overcontrol, granting of autonomy, warmth, hostility, anxious behavior) of mothers (n = 34) and fathers (n = 21) during a challenging parent-child interaction task (child

Anxiety in children: A review on how to address it in the perioperative setting post-pandemic.

In this paper, we review the psychological burden of SARS-CoV-2 on children and how health care workers can play a role in mitigating its mental health impact during anesthetic procedures. We evaluate the societal changes that have affected children over 2 years of the pandemic and the subsequent soaring rates of anxiety and depression reported. Unfortunately, the perioperative setting is a stressful experience at baseline and the addition of COVID-19 has only exacerbated the situation. Anxiety and depression are often linked to maladaptive behavior post-surgery, including increased rates of e

Making it "work": mothers' perceptions of workplace breastfeeding and pumping at Dutch universities.

BACKGROUND: Dutch breastfeeding rates are below World Health Organization's recommendations and targets despite the benefits for individuals and society. Increasing the rates is complex due to multiple breastfeeding determinants, of which maternal education and employment are dominant. This study aimed to identify the perceptions and experiences of mothers employed at Dutch universities regarding barriers and enablers to workplace breastfeeding and pumping. METHODS: The study adopted a descriptive, qualitative research design. Thirteen semi-structured online interviews, underpinned by the Soc

Societal pressures and procreative preferences for gay fathers successfully pursuing parenthood through IVF and gestational carriers.

This retrospective study surveyed decision-making and challenges among 78 gay cisgender male couples utilizing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and a gestational carrier. While most couples (67.1%) found the decision to actively pursue fertility treatment 'not difficult', 32.9% felt that it was 'somewhat difficult' or 'very or extremely difficult'. Almost 30% of couples had not undertaken financial planning for treatment, which introduced delays of > 2 years for 25.3% of participants. Conceiving twins was 'important to very important' in 52.3% of couples, and 84.2% of couples chose to transfer two
