Perception of early parenting in panic and agoraphobia.

Thirty-two patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of panic disorder (PD) were administered the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), a 25-item self-report questionnaire devised to evaluate parental rearing practices. Compared with 32 matched healthy controls, PD patients scored both their parents as being significantly less caring and more overprotective. Moreover, the consistency of parental attitudes between the 2 parents was significantly lower, indicating lesser uniformity in the rearing patterns.

Perceived Parenting and Borderline Personality Features during Adolescence.

This study investigates the associations between perceived parenting and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescents. The relations between components of parenting and BPD features were explored. Participants (N = 270; mean age = 15.3) assessed their own BPD features (Personality Assessment Inventory) and both of their parents' parenting practices (Parents as Social Context Questionnaire; Perceived Parental Autonomy Support Scale). SEM results suggest that controlling, rejecting and chaotic parenting all predicted global BPD, and all these parenting components were significantly assoc

Parenting in times of refuge: A qualitative investigation.

This qualitative study sheds light on how the different phases of refuge and resettlement shape parents' perceptions of their parenting. We used in-depth interviews to examine parents' accounts of how war and refuge gave rise to different stressors, and how these in turn shaped parenting. We interviewed 27 Syrian refugee parents recently settled in the Netherlands (16 families) twice, using a grounded theory approach. We distinguished five phases of refuge, namely prewar, war, flight, displacement, and resettlement. During flight and displacement, stressors associated with financial and materi

Harsh parenting during early childhood and child development.

We study the relationship between harsh parenting strategies, including psychological and physical aggressions that do not constitute abuse, on early childhood cognitive and socio-emotional development. We estimate a value-added model that controls for a rich set of child, mother, and family characteristics, from a nationally representative sample of Chilean children aged 52-83 months. We find harsh parenting is significantly associated with lower verbal skills (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test) of a magnitude of 0.06 standard deviations, and with increased behavioral problems (Child Behavior C

Parenting and discipline in post-conflict Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: While the literature on physical punishment concludes that it has negative effects on children, the practice remains common in many countries. In post-conflict countries with nongovernmental organizations (NGO) operating in child protection, traditional disciplinary practices may conflict with international child rights agendas. The country of Sierra Leone has a unique history of conflict, abject poverty, low literacy, and weak governance - often, NGO agents are responsible for providing social services that the government is unable to consistently provide. OBJECTIVE: We examined

Parenting Behaviors and Nutrition in Children with Leukemia.

The aim of this study was to examine whether parenting behaviors are associated with child nutrition amongst pre-school children receiving treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and to determine whether this association differs from that observed amongst a healthy population. Participants were 73 parents of children aged 2-6 years. The children were either a) receiving treatment for ALL (n = 43), or b) had no major medical history (n = 30). Participants completed psychometrically validated questionnaires that assessed parenting behaviors and child diet. Increased parental overprotec

Postadoption parenting and socioemotional development in postinstitutionalized children.

Children adopted from institutions (e.g., orphanages) overseas are at increased risk of disturbances in social relationships and social understanding. Not all postinstitutionalized children exhibit these problems, although factors like the severity of deprivation and duration of deprivation increase their risk. To date, few studies have examined whether postadoption parenting might moderate the impact of early adverse care. Three groups were studied: postinstitutionalized and foster care children both adopted internationally and nonadopted children reared in their families of origin. The Emoti

Survey on parenting practices among Chinese in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Cultural, religious and personal factors impact greatly on parenting. This survey aims to identify gaps in knowledge and perception about common parenting issues, with respect to mandarin-speaking Chinese in Singapore. There is an emphasis on first-time parents, who the authors feel may be the group which will require additional education and support on these issues. METHODS: A 37-item written survey was conducted before a public mandarin-language forum. Our response rate was 67 percent. RESULTS: Only 44 percent felt that paediatricians allocated sufficient time to discuss pare

Household chaos--links with parenting and child behaviour.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to confirm previous findings showing links between household chaos and parenting in addition to examining whether household chaos was predictive of children's behaviour over and above parenting. In addition, we investigated whether household chaos acts as a moderator between parenting and children's behaviour. METHOD: The sample consisted of 118 working- and middle-class two-parent English families with two children aged 4-8. Parents provided reports of the parent-child relationship, the level of chaos in their home and the children's problematic behaviour. The chi

Dykes and tykes: a virtual lesbian parenting community.

This article is a collaborative project by six members of an Internet community of lesbian mothers called MOMS. MOMS is a diverse community of lesbian mothers that is inclusive of bisexual and transgender women, as well those planning to become parents. The article outlines the history of the group and how the moderators have created an environment that encourages diversity. Members of the MOMS community differ in age, race, ethnicity, and nationality, as well as political, religious, and social expressions. Additionally, they became parents in diverse ways and parent children in distinct and

Gay marriage, same-sex parenting, and America's children.

Same-sex marriage, barely on the political radar a decade ago, is a reality in America. How will it affect the well-being of children? Some observers worry that legalizing same-sex marriage would send the message that same-sex parenting and opposite-sex parenting are interchangeable, when in fact they may lead to different outcomes for children. To evaluate that concern, William Meezan and Jonathan Rauch review the growing body of research on how same-sex parenting affects children. After considering the methodological problems inherent in studying small, hard-to-locate populations--problems t

Early sexual experiences among pregnant and parenting adolescents.

One hundred sixty-six pregnant or parenting adolescent females completed a survey regarding early sexual experiences (wanted and unwanted), family dysfunction and violence, and health-risky behaviors occurring prior to age 18. Fifty-three percent had at least one unwanted sexual experience. Younger age at first unwanted sexual experience was associated with younger age at first wanted sexual experience. Adolescent females with an unwanted sexual experience, as compared to those without, were more likely to be victims of physical violence, to have run away, to be substance abusers, and to have

Group home parenting: an examination of the role.

The staff role in group homes and half-way houses is psychologically demanding. Burn out and turnover are frequent; stress reactions are possible. Mental health professionals can contribute to program effectiveness and staff well-being by helping prepare persons to cope with the role stresses. Adequate preparation requires an understanding of the role experiences and their psychological implications. An initial analysis of the role is presented. The role is viewed as ambiguous, socially complex, and engendering performance fear. It requires a redefinition of the relation between work and perso

EMOTIONALLY AVOIDANT LANGUAGE IN THE PARENTING INTERVIEWS OF SUBSTANCE-DEPENDENT MOTHERS: ASSOCIATIONS WITH REFLECTIVE FUNCTIONING, RECENT SUBSTANCE USE, AND PARENTING BEHAVIOR.

Parenting and emotion regulation are two known, and potentially interrelated, areas of impairment among substance-abusing mothers. In this study, we examine substance -abusing mothers' (positive and negative) emotion language word use during their discussion of negative parenting experiences on the Parent Development Interview for its association with reflective functioning (RF), recent substance-use history, and sensitivity to child cues. Within a sample of 47 methadone-maintained mothers, we evaluate the hypothesis that linguistic evidence of emotional avoidance (more frequent positive feeli

Parent-to-Parent Communication for Parent Empowerment in the Management of Their Hospitalized Child's Pain.

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of research about the nature of the support parents need when their hospitalized child experiences pain. This study builds on previous research, which identified the need for a collaborative approach to managing children's acute pain, focused on empowering parents to be effectively involved. DESIGN: This study used a participatory qualitative approach. METHODS: Semi-structured online interviews were carried out by two researchers using four practice-based vignettes created with an expert pain nurse. The interviews elicited the views of eight parents on best practi

Parental depression and parent and child stress physiology: Moderation by parental hostility.

This study examined the moderating role of parental hostility on the associations between parental depression and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and morning cortisol levels of both parents and children. 148 parents and 148 preschool-aged children provided salivary cortisol samples at waking, 30 and 45 min post-waking on two consecutive days. Parental depression was assessed using a clinical interview, and parental hostility was assessed using an observational parent-child interaction task. Results indicated that the combination of parental lifetime depression and high parental hostility

[Consequences of parental burnout on the parent and the children].

Parental burnout is a serious disorder not only because of its prevalence, but also and especially because of the nature and extent of its repercussions. It is therefore necessary to review the state of the art in terms of its consequences, based on the scientific literature to date. This is necessary in order to describe precisely the psychological, behavioural and physiological consequences for the parent concerned, as well as the already documented consequences for the children.

The single parent: power and the integrity of parenting.

I have explored some issues of power and the balance of power in the situation of the single parent and the family. The single parent may need the support of a holding environment to achieve psychological integration as exemplified by my treatment with Ms. B. Without a cooperative mate and with societal prejudice, the psychotherapeutic situation may be the only nurturing environment. The therapist empowers the single parent by providing a supportive, nurturing environment. Parenting is receiving bad press in this decade. More examples of child abuse and the extreme of homicide come to public a
